My family is spread out all over so we decided to meet in a central location for a joint family vacation. I was in charge of the search and had started with a generic search in North Carolina. It eventually got narrowed down to the Franklin, Cherokee, Asheville areas and went from there. The atwaterfalls home caught my eye with the pictures of the waterfall and the fact that it had enough beds! The home looks just as it does in the pictures and was very comfortable and welcoming. The agent at Rest in the Mountains was very helpful and accommodating. The home had all the basic necessities including cooking utensils and linens, and the grocery store was close for all the rest. The star of the home was the waterfall. The home owners have made getting to the fall very easy with stairs leading to the bottom and a small deck for you to sit. It had a small "pool" of water for the kids to play in even though it was freezing cold. We spent most of our time on the porch listing to the amazing sounds of the water fall and enjoying the 70 degree weather in July! Having small kids there was a little concern with the steps indoors and outdoors but we managed to leave with only a few falls. The outdoor stairs to get VERY slippery, so make sure to bring water shoes. The only draw back was that it rained ALOT. I am not sure if it is normal for Franklin area to get so much rain or if we just were unlucky with rain gods. The grown ups didn't mind sitting on the porch listing to the rain and waterfall but the kids got bored rather quickly. All of the events we had planned for our vacation involved the outdoors like hiking or visiting all of the beautiful waterfalls in the Franklin, Brevard area. Even the caves and some of the gem mining locations were closed due to all the rain. But that being said, the home was great and our family had a wonderful time and the kids can't stop talking about the great waterfall. Thanks to the Owners of the home for sharing their wonderful spot. P.S the driveway is steep and curvy. While it is rather private so no heavy traffic you will encounter an occasional car and it gets a little hairy. If you are afraid of heights make sure you don't look out the car windows!!

Waterfalls and Climbing ropes
Waterfalls and Climbing ropes
We were delightfully surprised to discover the beds were already made when we arrived Tuesday night. The large dining table adjacent to the breakfast counter made meals and snacks fun. The decks were BEAUTIFUL and accessorized wonderfully with rocking chairs, a cushioned swing that could double as a bed in warm weather, and other cushioned seating arrangements. The climbing ropes were a HUGE hit with our kids (there's one just outside the backdoor which leads up to the dirt road and another dangling over the creek/waterfall to help you up to the next creek level). We enjoyed the hiking trail although I would only recommend it for the hearty or at least 5yrs old. The roar of the 70' waterfall was awesome and so peaceful. There were NO other people around or traffic. We safely walked/hiked wherever the kids wanted to explore. We felt the need to go NOWHERE but where we were. Ah . . . The kids ADORED the upstairs bunk/loft area with the cupboard "windows" so they could spy on us in the evenings! The stairs were a little exciting for our toddlers, but they managed okay. We had MORE than enough beds and space and different softnesses of beds to choose! It was lovely, cool, and green. We couldn't get the upstairs DVD/CD player to work, but the VCR worked fine. The hairpin turn before you arrive was exciting in my minivan! The only thing that could make it better would have been another full bath and/or an outdoor shower. The smaller kids could have used a flatbottomed/deeper tub, and it was a little cumbersome to share the upstairs full bath with so many bedrooms. The furnishings were comfortable and welcoming. I loved the bang of the screen doors as we went to the deck to listen to the waterfall, and the aroma of water and green-ness. Thank you! We're looking forward to planning another trip. :)

About the owner: We live in Florida and love to travel to the mountains. Our profession is designing and building homes so building a family vacation residence was an enjoyable undertaking for our entire family.
Why the Owner Chose Franklin:
We made frequent trips to the mountains staying in rentals in the Franklin and Highlands area. We decided to build our own home to enjoy the beauty of the mountains and waterfall with our family and friends.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Of course, rocking chair time on the large porch overlooking the waterfall is first. A close second would be looking for rubies at the base of the waterfall...we can sit for hours in lawn chairs in the shallow creek watching the kids explore the creek looking for creatures and treasures in the crystal clear waters. It's a PERFECT setting for smaii children to play and older children to climb for hours. We made an intimate trail system on site which is a perfect tune up for the area's many major trails, including an Appalachian trail head twenty minutes drive time from the house. All of the mountain adventures and sites are close by, but you will probably never want to leave the property.
