Year Purchased: 2011
About the owner: Clint and I live in Portland, Maine and built our house in Playa Zancudo in 2010 after spending several seasons as renters on the beach. Clint is a writer and avid surfer and i'm a yoga teacher and potter. Our kids are grown, and although we are not yet retired, we try and spend as much time as we can in our home away from home.
Why the Owner Chose Playa Zancudo:
Elegant, simple, and functional--our little house is a gem. The entire house is built of teak and other exotic woods. It sits on the beach, directly in front of what is arguably the best surf spot in Zancudo. Far enough from the busier village center so that birdsong, the cries of howler monkeys and the sound of the surf are all you will hear. But if you want a livelier evening, local bars and restaurants are easily reached by bike, or even on foot along the beach when the moon is full. We chose to build in Zancudo after exploring other areas in Costa Rica because although it is off the beaten path, there is a warm, eclectic and tight knit community here that welcomed us enthusiastically. The natural beauty is beyond compare.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
If you are a surfer looking for a consistent, empty break on a beautiful beach, this is the house for you. If you want bigger surf, walk left--smaller, walk right. If you want world class surfing head down the road about 35 minutes by car or taxi to Pavones, home to one of the longest left breaking waves in the southern hemisphere. If you prefer to lie in your hammock and read or take long solitary walks on the beach, this is the place for you, too. And if you want to make good friends, dine al fresco and watch monkeys play in your yard, this is also the place for you.
