Jim and Kepi are rare people. In a time when profit is placed as the highest priority, it can feel difficult to find genuine kindness and care, especially when traveling. People come to Hawaii for the beauty of nature, for the fabulous weather, for the relaxation, but most also want to meet the locals and partake in the culture. Many big hotels will treat you just as another tourist. With Jim and Kepi, you'll find the opposite. They will share all the best local hang out spots- from hot pools, to swimming with turtles, to botanical gardens, to night time farmers markets, to live music venues. Best of all, they'll share their joy, laughter, and generosity of heart with you. They are just those kind of people. The property and apartments reflect their creativity and playful spirit. Buddhas and Tikki's merrily, perhaps even mischievously, hang out throughout the gardens. The entire property has the feeling of sanctuary, and anyone can see that a lot of love, thought, and care went into its design. The inside of the apartments are clean, and have everything one could need. They feel like you've come home, and can now relax. Kepi's artwork decorates the walls- how special to see beautiful, one of a kind paintings, - and you get to meet the artist! We feel so fortunate to have happened upon Honu Hale. (Hawaiian for turtle's home). We loved it so much we extended our stay- and then extended it again!! It's like the song Hotel California- Check out any time you like, - but you'll never want to leave. :) Thank you Kepi and Jim- for everything. You have enriched our lives and we cherish your friendship.

I had the opportunity to spend 10 days at with Jim and Kepi at their tropical paradise. Because one of the apartments was booked previously I had the opportunity to stay in two of the apartments. They were both great, and one was only exceeded by the other. Both of the apartments have fully equipped kitchens with all the amenities one could ever ask for including Wi Fi, cable, CD player and a well stocked library of videos; as if one has time to watch videos or TV while in paradise! The fact that the apartments in fact do have all the comforts of home, these amenities are only outdone by the aloha spirits of the hosts, Jim and Kepi. I've traveled the world over and have never met "inn keepers" that were as knowledge, friendly and helpful as Jim and Kepi. Not only did they provide a warm welcome that included fresh fruit and and a kitchen that included freshly ground coffee, they provided a welcome that one might expect if visiting close friends, which by the way, I now consider Jim and Kepi to be. No holds barred, if you have the opportunity to stay in this wonderful tropical paradise you will have the opportunity to experience the true authentic spirit of Hawaii.

My wife and I wanted to go to the Big Island and didn't know where to stay? I found this place and went with my gut on this one. Well all I can say is I'm really glad I trusted the belly! My wife and I arrived at 9:30pm and the lights where on and the place was more than ready for us. In the morning Kepi and Jim came over with a plate of fresh fruit and Big Island smiles. They where great! You can't get this kind of attention/care at any hotel anywhere! The rental was very cool and had plenty of space for the two of us and a spare bed for our son when we retun next May. The place had everything you would need on vacation. The kitchen was well stocked for all our cooking needs too. They had all the towels(beach and bath), all the bedding was fresh and clean! The place had a nice flat screen and lots of channels if that's what you want. A beautifuI lanai for meals or just kicking your feet up to gaze out at the wonderful garden and pond. Just too many things to mention. But I believe however the best thing that this place offers is Kepi and Jim. They where so great. They made us feel comfortable almost like family. We had tons to do thanks to them. They told us about great spots to swin and hike and even took us on a few adventures and showed us places we never would have found without them. The cost of this rental is well worth it and in fact worth way more to my wife and me. It turns out the best things in life are free. The friendship we gained just by renting here will last a lifetime. All we think about is getting back to our new friends at Honu Hale 3 Thanks Kepi and Jim, We'll be back!

Tropical Paradise Indeed!
Tropical Paradise Indeed!
If you like being close to volcanoes, close to amazing snorkeling places, have a taste of life in the jungle, and have some great hosts of top of it, than this is the place for you! The house is lovely! Kepi painted the entire floor with turtles and made beautiful wall paintings too. The windows are typical of the tropics allowing a nice breeze in through the long white curtains. The bed is very comfortable and at night you can hear birds singing and sky is full of stars because there is no light pollution. You will be literally in the jungle near the volcanoes park. The patio was very very cute, their garden is like a botanical garden and they grow tropical fruit (they were so nice! they gave us 2 passion fruits every morning and we had tropical fruit for breakfast everyday -- they showed us where the farmers market was and we ate the most amazing strawberry papayas that ever existed and much cheaper than at grocery shops too!). Kepi and Jim were fun to talk to, they gave us useful info about where to find good bread and fresh fish poke, and told us about the lava tours (that is, how to get a guide to hike to actual molten lava -- parks won't give you this info!!!). The kitchen is fully equipped and you can cook -- we went to the fish market and cooked two tropical red fish, it was fun and they were delicious! Kepi and Jim's warm aloha spirit was wonderful and it really made me want to move to Big Island forever :)

To Stay Here Is To Love It!
To Stay Here Is To Love It!
Postcard perfect.... It is difficult to find words to describe to the ambiance, and true Aloha Spirit of this perfect little piece of paradise. During my extended stay, I was fortunate enough to have stayed in several of the unique and lovely apartments, all of which had their own personality and are most enchanting, to say the least. Jim and Kepi are two wonderful and caring people that went out of their way to share their knowledge of the Big Island and to make our stay the most pleasant that I have ever known. I have traveled the Hawaiian Islands and most of the world and used VRBO on numerous occasions, so I know value and an exceptional property when I find one. Five stars would be an understatement! On a scale of 1-5 stars, this property is off the scale! The property is an excellent example of two talented artists that have created the perfect example of paradise. Jim and Kepi are true artists. Their artistic talent and care is obvious in every aspect of the work of love that they have put into this home away from home. Nestled within a lush tropical setting, the property is laid out in such a way to make the units, private, and comfortable. You can relax in any of the units and marvel at the unique artistic touches with a view of the lush foliage, or stroll thru the garden, amongst the flowers, exotic plants, lily ponds and palm trees and marvel at all of the little details and surprises that you will discover at every turn. The property is an experience, words or photos can’t do it justice. Staying at this property is the best way to experience and appreciate the true Hawaiian spirit of Aloha. To stay here is to love it! If you desire to experience the true Aloha Spirit, and the opportunity to enjoy the people and the culture of Hawaii, leave your pre-conceived ideas of a vacation behind and spend more time on the East side of the Big Island and stay at this property. There is much more to do on the Big Island than most people imagine. If you embrace the true Hawaiian Sprit and the inviting surroundings of this property, chances are you will leave an enlightened person and want to extend the love of the Aloha Spirit to others. You will experience a way of life that most visitors to Hawaii are never aware that exists. I feel so fortunate to have selected this property to stay at. I would recommend this property to anyone. Thank you Jim and Kepi for sharing your little piece of paradise, knowledge, Aloha Spirit and most gracious hospitality.

Such a beautiful property! My boyfriend and I spent two nights there on our vacation in February. The house had so much charm. Having a kitchen while on vacation was also great. Kepi was such a helpful host. She stopped by every morning to see how we were doing and to hear about our plans for the day. She often gave us ideas and hints on things to do and see. I would recommend staying here when you are visiting the Hilo side of the Big Island.

I really enjoyed my stay at Hale Honu. Kepi and Jim were great and I can easily recommend them to anyone. There place is off the beaten track and quiet, but still very close to Hilo. I will definitely be staying there again the next time I visit the Hilo side of the Big Island.

My husband and I went to Hilo for one last vacation before I either stat dialysis or have a transplant. Could not have found a better place to stay, location is perfect quiet and peaceful at the same time close to every thing we wanted to do. The Hosts Kepi and Jim could not be any nicer, so accommodating and help full with ideas and tips of what to do. We will be back when my health permits and enjoy another great time.

This place is fantastic! Jim and Kepi are very special people who not only made our stay here wonderful, they also went out of their way to help ease our transition to the Big Island from the Mainland (we had just moved here from California, and looking back, their guidance was crucial during the first few weeks we were here). The facility itself is clean, comfortable, and very relaxing. Jim and Kepi have made this place unique with some personal touches of art and landscaping; the photos don't do it justice. Everything works well, including the high speed internet, the cable t.v., etc. It is located within 15 minutes of just about everything in Hilo! It is also one of the best deals you will find. Don't wait too long to book, though, because they tend to be fully booked. Once you have stayed there, you will understand why. I think that most of their guests are probably return patrons. Now that we live on the Big Island, this is where we will advise our out-of-town guests to stay.

My fiancé and I stayed here from December 28th- January 2nd. We had a blast on this island! Kepi was very helpful when booking this property and once we arrived she was continued with a nice warm welcome. She told us about several nice places to visit while we were on the island. We have never seen that many green sea turtles before; thanks for the recommendation, Carlsmith beach park had 3 massive green sea turtles! The condo was fully stocked and clean. We would stay here again, nice place and a very nice owner. Thanks Kepi! FYI, if you have not been to the green sand beach, check it out… it was one of our favorites! Make sure to take the off road ride from the locals, it was a fun experience!
