  • serene haven in central Italy

"Having visited Todi and the surrounding area on several prior occasions, we can state unequivocally that Casa del Gelso is the finest, most comfortable and peaceful place to stay anywhere in Umbria or Tuscany. Its location allows travel throughout the central regions of Italy, always returning to a quiet scenic vista. It is an easy walk up the hill to the ancient city of Todi where people-watching, dining and exploring are unlimited."

  • A Perfect Retreat

"Everything in all the other 5-star reviews is absolutely true. I almost hesitate to say how wonderful this place is, for fear there will be no vacancy when we want to go back, but Simonetta and Corrado’s cottage really is a dream come true. Spotlessly clean, beautifully situated on a hilltop with a stunning view, thoughtfully furnished, and so relaxing and comfortable that we did not want to leave. I had envisioned this as a base for day trips around Umbria and perhaps train trips to Florence and Rome, but in fact we spent much of our time right there ‘at home.’ We did take the train to Florence for one day, but even in early May it was jam-packed with hordes of (other) visitors, and we were happy to escape back to our hilltop retreat. We enjoyed some local back-road exploring as well as a visit to Orvieto. Note: if you don’t care to wait in a crowd and take the funicular up to the town, you can drive your car up and park on top. It was fun walking around the small streets and alleyways. Ask Simonetta about a tour of their family winery, Venuta Le Velette. We were fortunate to be able to join an English-language tour and tasting, conducted by Corrado’s sister Cecelia. It was a very instructive, entertaining and delicious experience. I hate to stop writing this review: it’s almost like leaving this lovely place again. But we always say “If we don’t leave, we can’t come back.”"

  • Unforgettable

"This is a special house that is meticulously clean and beautifully appointed. Everything is as pictured, but no picture can record the intangibles about this property. It has been lived in by people who love it and is greater than the sum of its parts. If you love art, color, and living in the clouds this is the place for you. La Torre is high above the valley with a stunning view of Spoleto across the gorge. I rented for two weeks and had two friends join me for nine days. It was perfect for the three of us as house is on three levels with a good bit of privacy. I also felt safe on the days that i was there alone. There is a hot tub surrounded on two sides by rosemary and lavender cascading down the wall. There is always room on the terrace for visitors, dinner, or just relaxing. Be ready to climb a bit but we all stayed without a car as Spoleto is only a 20 minute walk through the woods and across the aquaduct. In addition to art, there is a dwindling collection of CDs with includes John Coltrane's Coltrane Plays the Blues. Every evening we would pop in the music and watch the clouds shift and occasional rain on the horizon, on top of the world in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Be ready to walk and climb, there is a lot to see and do in every direction. The driveway is a challenge that I did not face as we walked down to the train station almost every day to head out to neighboring hill towns."
