About Howard Grant

My name is Howard and I am a contractor on the Big Island. I built this home for myself and 2 sons. The house was a labor of love and did almost all the work myself. My sons are now grown and have families of their own and I felt that it was time to share my home with other travelers. I live in a cottage on the back of the property so I can give my guests privacy when they need it and assistance with questions or issues that may come up. I want to make sure your time on the Big Island is special.

Why Howard Grant chose Keaau

This area is the "sunshine belt" of the East side. Walking distance to the ocean and some great fishing spots. Mostly its quiet and private.

What makes this house unique

Each bedroom has its own custom bath. I bought most of the tiles and cabinetry and art during my travels in Asia.

Beautiful and luxurious large home!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled to Hilo from Maui specifically for the Merrie Monarch Festivals. We normally stay at a hotel in town but we decided to try a house since we were traveling with our 12-month old great grandchild and wanted to give her more room to move around. We are so glad we chose this house as it was exactly what we were looking for and exactly as described and shown in the pictures. The house is huge! We loved the built in window seats and deck/patio in every room. Of course having your own bathroom in each bedroom is a huge bonus. We loved the huge deck/lanai outside of the main living area as well as the smaller one outside the front door. Our baby loves being outdoors so the big deck provided a feeling of being outside but kept her in a secured area. Having the pool table, surf boards and bicycles were a nice added touch even though we didn’t use the boards. Our baby loved that Papa could take her for a morning ride on the bicycle every morning. Howard was very nice. He gave us our privacy but was there if we needed anything. Hilo happened to be very hot at the time and there was hardly any breeze so we did miss the A/C of the hotel but the ceiling fans helped a little. Another of many big pluses was that the house was very clean. We loved knowing that our baby was safe as she crawled/walked to explore her new surroundings. I love wooden floors but the tile/ceramic flooring in the bathrooms and the master bedrooms were exceptional. I’m sad that we weren’t able to use the jacuzzi but was glad to know we had that option. We live in Hawaii too so seeing a bug here or there is no big deal. Thank you for the heads up on what to do and what not to do about the bugs. You might want to add a few more comments regarding the outside lights. We left the garage door light on when we went out at night and that was a BIG mistake. All-n-all we had a very enjoyable stay and would definitely use this property again.

Amazing vacation home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

What can I say, our visit to Hawaii was made even better staying at Uncle Howard's Hale. The house was comfortable, spacious, had all the amenities all in a beautiful setting. Each bedroom has it's own private lanai or patio and bathroom. The living room has a comfy couch and several chairs and the kitchen was well equipped for all our needs. There's a great lanai and smaller one off the living area which were super relaxing and the game room was a nice place to hang in the evenings as well.

Waking up everyday to a gorgeous sunrise and having coffee and breakfast on the big lanai was a memorable experience. Each day we were blessed with geckos and lizards which brought us a lot of joy, especially for the kids. Even when we had down time, which wasn't a lot, the kids still had things they could do around the house (thank you Howard for the coloring books and crayons). The neighborhood was safe and quiet, that is if you don't mind roosters and frogs. :)

The snorkeling gear and boogie board worked out great for our excursions to the beaches. We didn't really use the bicycle or surf boards but it was nice knowing they were there at our disposal. When the solar panels weren't heating the water enough due to rain, Uncle Howard came and turned on the water heater for us. No more cold showers!

Howard is a really cool guy who gives you lots of space but is also there when you need him. His suggestions on places to visit worked out great and we were happy we listened to his sage and gracious advice.

I would highly recommend this house for families with or without children. All the upper lanai's are secured with gates that unlock from the stair side and there's also a gate in the living area at the top of the stairs. The only issue was the king bed in the upper room was really hard and not super comfortable. Other than that, it was the most comfortable and beautiful place I've been to on the Island. Thank you Howard!

Great place to stay on the east side of the big island!

  • 5 of 5

Great house is plenty of room to stretch out. The lava rock shoreline nearby is a beautiful place to watch the waves roll in. Short drive to Hilo for all the essentials. Great base of operations to explore the east side. Family also enjoyed coming back after taking in the sites and sitting out of covered patio and playing pool and darts. Would definitely stay here again. Thanks Howard!

5 Star Accommodations

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Howard for sharing you home with us! What generous surprise to be greeted with coffee and chocolate mac-nuts upon our arrival. Our girls loved their rooms. They were down right giddy to each have their own bathroom and balcony. We loved the Balinese wood carvings and decor. After a full day and night hiking to the lava flows coming back to a washer and dyer was much appreciated! The spacious yard is filled with all variety of tropical fruit trees and plants. The baby pineapple were so cute. We'll have to come back when they are ready to eat! One would be hard pressed to find a more magnificent place to stay!

For those staying here, here's a quick tip: Take a quick 5 minute drive to the north end of Beach Road to watch the sunrise on a secluded bluff overlooking the ocean.
