VIEWS and WILDLIFE

The view from the property is very special – you’ll be treated to the drama of the waves, white fluffy clouds, beautiful sunrises, passing cruise ships in the distance, and our version of backyard wildlife. Sea turtles, dolphins, whales (Nov-May), and even the occasional manta ray can be spotted from the oceanfront. Mynas, doves, cardinals, geese, great frigatebird, and other birds occasionally drop in for a visit and provide a source of entertainment.

STAYING GREEN

At Hale Kai Nalu, we strive to be friendly to the environment. We have solar water heating, fluorescent lighting, and energy-efficient fixtures. Ceiling fans throughout the home and screened windows allow us to take advantage of the wonderful breezes to cool the home. We partner with a eco-friendly house keeping service to minimize the use of harsh chemicals. Finally, we recycle and make it easy for our guests to participate with conveniently placed bins.

PRIVACY and SAFETY

The entire property is fenced for additional privacy and peace of mind. There is a front entry gate with an automatic opener (a portable remote control is available to allow convenient access from your vehicle). The oceanfront area is accessed through a pedestrian gate that is lockable. Access into the home is easy - there are no stairs and access through the front door is through a slight transition.

LOCATION

The home is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park, about 18 miles from the historic town of Hilo (main town of the Big Island) and 10 miles from Pahoa – you’ll have easy access to various shops and services. It is an ideal location to launch all of your east Hawaii adventures.

Why The Owner chose Keaau

We chose this location mainly for the peaceful, oceanfront location and its proximity to many of East Hawaii's sights. The half-acre lot provides privacy and the opportunity to create a lush tropical landscape. We're constantly experimenting with plants that thrive in the oceanfront environment so our landscape is wonderfully evolving.

What makes this house unique

Relaxing in the pool and hot tub are our favorite activities when we visit the property. Especially enjoyable is hanging out in the hot tub in the evening while looking out at the stars and moon, smelling the ocean mist, and listening to the surf.

Having the full kitchen and grill provides us with the ability to create home-cooked meals while visiting.

Guestbook comments from the manager

The view is awesome! We saw a whale! The pool is fun! The home is very beautiful and comfortable for a family. We came to visit our son and his family & all 6 of us had a great time! We are sorry to leave, especially since we are going home to a foot of snow.

Also nice to have pool toys and beach supplies.

Beautiful views and very comfortable home

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this lovely home. The house is nicely appointed and everything you could possibly need is providing including beach chairs, cooler, pool noodles and more. At first we thought it was a little bit far away from everything but we came to appreciate the quiet and solitude and only hearing the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks.

The only thing we didn't like was the house was extremely hot and humid when we arrived at 8 p.m. because there isn't air conditioning so the only way to cool it off is to open windows and turn on fans. In the future it would be great if someone could air it out before guest arrive.

Other than that, everything was fantastic! Thank you Terry for everything!

Beautiful views, uncomfortable beds.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in this house for about a week. It was mostly a good experience but there were some issues for us.

Positives:

- Great views out of the back of the house and you could hear the ocean

- House was very clean

- Pool was very clean and fun to use.

- Loved that snorkel, pool toys, and beach equipment (umbrella) etc were provided

- Nice washer and dryer which worked well.

- All appliances worked well.

- Provided basic necessities like soap, detergent and there was a closet full of other things like swim diapers, sunscreen, etc.

Issues:

- The beds were incredibly uncomfortable. There were very hard and you could feel the springs in them. They squeaked a lot when you rolled over and changed position. Additionally the mattresses seemed to be wrapped in plastic or something and crinkled when you moved. No one slept well and we ended up leaving a day early and staying in a hotel so we could get some rest before flying back home.

- There was an issue with some sort of beetle in the kitchen. We kept finding beetles in the sink and crawling around the counter. I understand you are in a tropical region and it wasn't a huge issue until we started finding them in the bowls and cups...this was kind of gross. We were taking out the trash constantly trying to minimize them, but a trash can with a cover might help.

- The house is in a more remote area with a fairly large vagrant population. The owners ask that you lock all windows and doors when leaving and make sure the gate to the property is always locked. While we completely understood the reasoning behind this, having to close all the windows made the house get incredibly hot. When we got back the house was always sweltering and it took quite a while to cool down. It probably would have cooled faster if the front door and/or patio door had a screen on them, but they were solid glass so we weren't getting a lot of airflow.

- It was also a bit noisy at night, the neighbors had a dog that would start barking around 5am. With no A/C we had to have the windows open at night to stay cool so there was no sleeping in late during this stay.

Just one last comment. This house is pretty much on a cliff, the owners do warn you about this in the contract and there is a gate and wall between the house and the cliff. We had a 2 year old with us that we had to really keep an eye on. So, just a comment for those with small children.

Owner's Response: We are truly sorry if you had any problems. In several years of renting the home and so, so many tenants this is the ABSOLUTE FIRST time that ANYONE has complained about the beds. In fact, we have many many return guests that come year after year and you can be sure if this is an issue we would have certainly heard about it.. But rest assured the owners are going to assess the beds and if they need replacing, then it certainly will be done. the Owners take total pride in keeping the home immaculate and comfortable. I wish you would have let me know if there was any bug issue. IF tenants call me (that is what I am here for) We immediately take care of any issues. This will be looked at right away. There is gate and fence and yes the ocean in front is 20 ft up from the water, so as long as tenants respect the beauty of the ocean and do not get too close to the edge then, just like with the pool, you should always be responsible for your children around water areas. We will always strive to keep the HALE KAI NALU as a top destination and we take any complaints totally personally and will rectify immediately. Please look at other reviews. Perfection!

  • 5 of 5

The home was stunning. We arrived after dark and it was a little challenging to find the home - but the light was on and we were able to get into the gate just fine. As it was dark, we were unable to see the oceanview - but we were mesmerized by the sound of the water. We unpacked and settled in for a wonderful nights sleep. The house was clean. The linens and towels were fresh and clean. After a long day of traveling, a refreshing shower was needed by everyone. We turned on the ceiling fans and opened the windows - the ocean breeze was perfect.

When we woke in the morning, we were taken back at the beauty of the home and the backyard. The seawall was gorgeous. The yard was beautifully decorated and landscaped. The pool/hot tub were perfect.

The owner and property manager clearly have pride in this house - and do an exceptional job of cleaning it, managing it, and stocking it with high quality linens and supplies.

We had a slight hiccup with the Garbage Disposal, but after a quick email and call, the Property Manager and Owner sent someone to assist.

Hale Kai Nalu was a stunning home with a gorgeous backyard and oceanview - owned and managed by caring and wonderful people. It could not have been any better. Mahalo and thank you for opening up your home to us over the Christmas holiday. We cannot wait to return next year.

The supply closet was well stocked with various knick-knacks - we added some to the supply when we left (detergent, bug spray, rain ponchos) as our luggage was full with souvenirs we picked up. The owner and property manager thought of everything and truly excel at making people feel special while on vacation.

Paradise on the rocks

  • 5 of 5

There is nothing about this property that is less than fantastic. Like others have indicated, the pictures are not doing justice to the actual property.

The central space is wide open and modern with just a hint of beach decor. Nothing is overbearing, it's very calm with a muted color scheme.

The kitchen is modern.

The bedrooms are comfortable.

Lighting throughout is ample and bulbs all light (yes, that's a notable)

Here are some spectacular points:

The swimming pool. Large and I'd guess about 6" deep. Lovely for lounging and getting misted by the crashing waves on the lava cliffs, just beyond the fence. Pool lights are perfect.

The hot tub. Not too large, but perfect for four.

The car port. No hot vehicle - hooray.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely home on a quiet road with the Pacific Ocean playing in stereo.

Enjoyable stay

  • 3 of 5

Our stay was enjoyable. My only disappointment would have been the appliances. And the cleandiness of the pool.

Owner's Response: you should have informed me of the pool. We keep it pristine, and I would have called the pool person immediately. I will inform the owners of the appliances and I am sure they will update or fix whatever is needed. We keep the home immaculate, but if folks don't inform me, I have no way of knowing. Mahalo
