Amazingly quiet cabin nestled in the National Forest. Sounds of a trout stream, large front porch, recent upgrades, charming soapstone stove, will make you take a deep breath. This is like being cradled in a park, with walks along the river running for miles. The house is not huge, but the cathedral ceiling, and nice layout live larger. There is deeded access to the river across the road. Local within 10-20 minutes include Crabtree Falls, Spy Rock, Montebello Trout Pond, Horseback riding, Blue Ridge Parkway, 30 minutes to Wintergreen and the 151 corridor, with breweries, wineries, and Piney River Rails to Trails, to mention a few. Also access to little known private hikes along mountain streams. This little valley has a variety of other vacation rentals along the river and is a hidden gem 1 hr from Charlottesville. For larger groups consider renting one or more of the several cabins right across the road, Deer Run or Bears Paw etc. There is internet/wifi through a satellite connection.

About Scott Wiley
We bought this last fall and fell in love with the area. We have jobs as nurse and psychologist, and find the peace a quiet to be wonderful. We manage three other properties ( not on VRBO) so are familiar with guest needs and hosting. Our future plans include a hot tub and outdoor fire pit area, as well as an outbuilding bedroom/bath.
Scott Wiley purchased this Cabin in 2016
Why Scott Wiley chose Montebello
We bought this place after staying in a weekend rental nearby, and happening upon this listing. The weather in summer is generally 10 degrees cooler than Charlottesville. The road in front of the house runs for miles along the river, but some days it is hard to make it off the front porch!
What makes this Cabin unique
The local area is rich in both history ( a century old flour mill up the road, an old log cabin across the road, and a quaint cemetery from before 1900 to name a few) and also close to Crabtree Falls, 151, the Parkway and hikes, swimming holes in the river, native trout streams within walking distance.

A Charming Cabin, Perfect for a Long Weekend
We had a great time at the cabin. The kitchen is very nice, though we mostly cooked on the gas grill on the porch. We did several hikes and waded into the river (though it was still pretty cold in May). The location is perfect for hiking in the GW National Forest. We also drove up Route 150 to visit wineries and breweries a few of the days. If you go, you should know that you are definitely isolated and will want to grocery shop before you arrive and plan to have your meals at the cabin. This wasn't an issue for us, but it is very different from how we usually vacation.
Great Getaway in the Mountains of Virginia!
This was my wife and I's first trip to the area. My wife was happy due to the private relaxation & fully stocked kitchen at the property and the close proximity to the shops in Charlottesville. I was fine with this bc one of my favorite breweries is on 151 on the way home! I also got a good amount of fly fishing in due to the close proximity of the local creeks and river. Overall, a great place to spend your free time!
Great little hide away!!
The house was cozy we really enjoyed our stay. It has a great deck that's perfect for relaxing and listening to the creek, except we just couldn't stay out long during the day because of the bee's and wasp that have made homes in the tin roof over the deck. But it was great sitting under the covered area listening to the rain coming through and passing ( no bees or wasp haha) or in the evenings listing to the frogs and water rush down the mountain. The backyard was under construction so we couldn't really hang out, out there. The mattresses was not to my liking I like more of a firm bedding, it was super soft.
Overall my husband totally loved it and this weekend was was for him so I scored!! I would/ we would love to rent it again maybe for a little longer.
Only thing besides bees/wasp that I would change would be to add a full size couch so those who have a liking to a firm sleeping may have another place to rest. Thank you for having us..
Thanks for the suggestions. For future guests: I will leave bug spray out in a prominent place. The mattress dilemma is that it is a brand ( less than a week old) new Tuft and Needle, (replacing another softer new mattress from the Fall) that supposedly is rated as firm, but that is in the eye of the sleeper. The living room love seat is a sleeper, but I have never found them to be that comfortable, mainly for kids. The back yard recently was torn up for a new septic system, so not quite ready for walking, so would suggest the front yard/deck, and the miles of country road along the river right in front of the house, as well as the lovely old cemetery next door. The large elevated deck has dining table, glider, gas grill, and area for a fire pit. I have a hot tub to install, and am planning a back deck/tub area for the back yard later this summer.
The Perfect Getaway
We loved everything about this property. We spent time on the river, walked the road with our dogs every morning and evening. Crabtree Falls are close and a great little excursion. Very quiet and private. The kitchen was very cute and had everything we needed to cook our own meals (that we brought) while we were there. It was fun to explore and will be returning next chance we get!
I had a great weekend in a great place.
Most definitely recommended.
Way more than we expected!
We really didn’t expect to find such an incredible little house! Beautifully decorated, in a serene area with the sounds of the river and everything you could need is inside- even had a dog bed for my dog to sleep on! Tons of breweries, wineries, and distilleries just about 30 min away, too. Hosts had left plenty of brochures and even handwritten suggestions of things to do in the area.
This is a quiet setting, sounds of the river, miles of walks. Minutes from Crabtree Falls, the Blue Ridge Parkway, fish hatchery. Convenient to Wintergreen, and the 151 selection of restaurants and wineries are 30-40 minutes. Or just relax on the large front porch. It is always 10 or more degrees cooler than Charlottesville.
