On premises owner not appropriate for VRBO and house not as advertised
The add stated "Up to two FEMALE guests ONLY". I noticed there was a review from a male guest and his wife, so I wrote the owner to see if my wife and I could stay there and she agreed. I wrote her again when my wife had to cancel due to other obligations and she was still OK with it being just me. But when I arrived alone, she seemed disappointed my wife was not with me and said so.
It was very hot and humid that night and I was soaking wet with sweat. I am disabled due to a condition similar to MS, and heat is very hard on me. I was exhausted and just needed to cool down. The house was very warm and it was not air conditioned, AS WAS ADVERTISED. However, there was an old ceiling fan in the bedroom. I reached up and pulled the chain starter and the brittle plastic attachment to the fan disintegrated. I called the owner in to show her and surprisingly she became very upset with me. She told me I should have used the wall switch, and explained that she never used the pull chain. When she flipped the switch the fan started up just fine, as I assume it always had for her. It was uncomfortable and humiliating being scolded like that for something so trivial and of no consequence.
I was curious, so I asked her why she only wanted to rent to females. She explained that she had a single male guest before, and he drank all of her expensive coffee and spilled wine on her carpet. With that temperament, I was thinking she probably should not be renting a room in her house on VRBO.
Later on I went down the hall shirtless to my bathroom. She was at her desk in her office about five feet from me. That is not "a private bedroom and bath on the opposite side of the house", AS WAS ADVERTISED. That is no privacy at all.
I had paid for a 5 day stay plus security deposit, but it was clear this would not work for me. I told her the next morning that I was leaving because I felt uncomfortable there. She then told me she would be charging me for the fan. I reminded her that she had told me that she never even used the pull-chain since she had always used the wall switch. I tried to explain to her that old fans like that (probably at least 40 years old) develop corrosion on their contacts and the switch tumblers can seize up, making it easy to snap the brittle plastic connection to the fan since that was the weak link. Besides, the fan was working fine without the chain. She kept my deposit anyway. That was my most expensive bad night stay ever. She did OK though.
So sorry that you felt so uncomfortable that you chose to shorten your stay. You came at a time that in Austin we were and still are very hot and humid typical of Texas summer. However you are incorrect. The central air is less than 3 years old working at the time and the home was built in 1975 much later than your assumption the ceiling fan was at least 40 years old as this was farm land prior. You did ask if was okay that you were coming alone at the last minute despite my advertised preference for female tenants. The eve of your arrival I reiterated and you acknowledged that all food and beverages were not provided but you were welcome to bring your own. You broke the ceiling light fan chain within 5 minites of your arrival and apologized adding ‘I guess I’m going to have to pay for that”. At no time did I scold you but instead asked to see the chain. It was tightly clutched in your hand and I had to pry it from your hands I can only assume you had spasmed and is due to your handicap. It would have been very simple to ask me to up the speed of the fan as I was in the next room when I heard a loud thump. I again assume you tried to reach the chain by climbing on the bed as you were on crutches. The living quarters are on opposite sides of the house. In fact I waited until the next morning to see how you we’re holding up and waited unto at least 1pm when I finally heard you come out of the guest room and surprised to see you sneaking out with luggage. You said you felt uncomfortable. I never admonished you for the breakage or treated you any different than when you arrived. Again I’m sorry this was not a fit. And the reason for preferred female tenants was at the request of my family since I’m a single woman.
Nice little house just outside the busy downtown area of Austin with a wonderful outdoor area out back. Pamela was a great host, and enjoyable company. Given the chance, I will stay again, and would recommend for anyone who looks more for quiet space and has a love for the outdoors.
Very convenient to south Austin. A lovely home! This was my second stay and I will definitely stay again.
Nice home in a beautiful area and Pamela Weaver is a wonderful and interesting person! I hope this place is available the next time I come to Austin, it cannot be beat!
Pamela was very welcoming. The property is lovely and the room/bathroom were cozy and clean.
Thanks so much Amy and if you or your gal horse friends return for another clinic, keep my place in mind. :)
Great, quiet room with a friendly host
Pamela’s house is nice and cozy in the quiet countryside but still within 20 minutes of downtown Austin. Also, there are a lot of great attractions even closer such as breweries and BBQ joints. Our host was friendly and we would definitely stay there again.
Thanks so much for your review. Hope to see you in the future.
