A Beautiful Vacation Awaits You on the Emerald Smith River!

Bedrooms 1
Half Baths1
Space 900 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Bunk Area, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2-8)

This is a vacation spot you will want to return to. Our cabin is in a beautiful setting, perched above the wild and scenic South Fork Smith River surrounded by beautiful forest. The peacefulness of this river environment will linger with you for months.

Relax in sun or shade on our large deck complete with nice furniture, or lounge on the edge of the river with an exquisite view of our beautiful swimming hole from the stone patio area. An amazing stone stairway winds down to a magnificent sandy beach, where you can sunbathe, wade or swim in the pristine waters of the Smith. The clear green water of this famous river will soothe your soul.

Enjoy regular sightings of Dippers, Kingfishers, Mergansers, Osprey, Great Blue Herons, an occasional Bald Eagle or River Otter. Mask and snorkel open a world of small salmon and trout fingerlings, large Cutthroat Trout, and an occasional large Spring Chinook Salmon.

Our cabin is a very comfortable A-frame which was completely remodeled in 2004. It features a very nice open kitchen fully supplied with everything you will need to prepare a feast. The floors are wood/laminate, with three large rugs.

A large bathroom has a shower/tub combination and large sink. A nice river rock hearth holds a wood stove to warm you, with firewood provided. A nice carpeted loft upstairs has a comfortable queen size bed and half bath, accessed by a spiral staircase.

Under one angled wall of the main floor is a nice sleeping bunk area with covered foam pads and storage underneath, suitable for sleeping bags for two or three. A set of three pads can be made into a queen sized bed on the floor. During spring and summer some people enjoy sleeping on the deck or pitching a tent outside for larger groups.

The campfire area just off the deck is a wonderful place to enjoy an evening of storytelling. Don't forget the marshmallows!

Great location, great hosts and property, great relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Off the grid and worth it. This property embraces everything about natural resource enjoyment and conservation values. Not only is it breathtakingly gorgeous and near one of the most iconic parks in the world but the hosts are exceptional stewards of wild places. They make the experience all the more enriched. Thank you Joe, Sally and Bella! We will be name dropping you to friends.

Owner's Response: Barbara, Thank you for the nice review. We are so glad that you had a nice time here as well as in greater Del Norte County. There is much to be discovered in our region. I look forward to learning more from you about managing the forest landscape, and hope you both, and the dogs, are able to return one day. Best wishes, Joe and Sally

Serene setting, lovely clean cabin

  • 5 of 5

Joe and Sally are wonderful hosts. Over decades, they have built up a lovely park-like setting, all for the lead up to one of the best swimming holes on all of the Smith River. The cabin is very clean, quiet, and wonderfully appointed. Five stars!

What a perfect place

  • 5 of 5

Loved it. Just, loved it. If you know anything about the Smith River, you know it's probably the most pristine river in the USA. But what you don't know, is that this cabin is on the most perfect spot on the Smith River. Perfect swimming hole with just enough ripples and rocks just upstream to make the tubes/boats move a little faster.

It's very close to the Redwoods, which I loved. My kids thought the Redwoods were great and all, but couldn't wait to get back to play in the river. Oh, and play with Bella, the most gentle dog to be found, anywhere.

Joe and Sally are tremendous hosts. They're there and available, and full of local information. We enjoyed our departure-day visit with them. I would've been pleased to have Joe be my kids' teacher before he retired.

The house itself is just right. You don't come out here to watch movies on a big-screen TV and play on your techno-gadgets. You come out here to get away from all that. And, "gotten away" is how you feel. So quiet and peaceful. And SO DARK at night. After the first night, we made sure to have the little provided hand-lamps next to our beds for the future.

So, would we go back again? Oh, man. We can't WAIT to go back again.

Peace at Last

  • 5 of 5

Great spot close to the Redwoods and the Beach. We wanted some quiet time together, but didn't realize this cabin was off the grid (literally), and no tv, etc. I know what you're thinking, "Do we really have that much to talk about? Do I really want to get to know my significant other that well?" I asked myself the same things. The answers are, no and no. Nobody has anything interesting to say for that long. But guess what...quiet is thus invoked! And if you don't want to hear your significant other blather on about this or that, you can wander the beautiful property, watch the otters or talk with Bella (the dog). God forbid you read a book. I tried it, and really actually enjoyed it.

Grab some adult beverages and enjoy the spacious deck. Joe and Sally were very cool, and answered all of our challenging questions. Go there and be.

One of the cleanest homes we have stayed in

  • 5 of 5

The location is fantastic. You can explore the redwoods in the morning and swim in the afternoon. Our family including two small children and a dog, had a wonderful stay here.

The owners are extremely kind and take a great deal of care in their vacation rental. This home was a great experience, we are extremely happy that we were able to come. Thank you.

Fabulous Redwoods Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here in September 2013, and we still talk about it all the time. I think of the vacation often and fondly! The hiking amongst the redwoods was a magical experience, and coming "home" to this cozy cabin every night was a treat. We made delicious dinners, enjoyed the river view from the deck, and slept well in the absolute silence. The owners were very hospitable and welcoming and answered all our questions about the area. We are looking forward to visiting again!

Owner's Response: Amy, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your stay in our cabin and visit to the redwoods. As you now know, there is far more to experience here in Del Norte than redwoods, as our beaches, rivers, and trails are breathtaking too. Sally and I are so glad that you felt comfortable and cozy in our cabin, and we will look forward to seeing you both again. Hope you are enjoying Spring, Joe
