Overview

About the property

Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Bunk Area, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2-8)

This is a vacation spot you will want to return to. Our cabin is in a beautiful setting, perched above the wild and scenic South Fork Smith River surrounded by beautiful forest. The peacefulness of this river environment will linger with you for months.

Relax in sun or shade on our large deck complete with nice furniture, or lounge on the edge of the river with an exquisite view of our beautiful swimming hole from the stone patio area. An amazing stone stairway winds down to a magnificent sandy beach, where you can sunbathe, wade or swim in the pristine waters of the Smith. The clear green water of this famous river will soothe your soul.

Enjoy regular sightings of Dippers, Kingfishers, Mergansers, Osprey, Great Blue Herons, an occasional Bald Eagle or River Otter. Mask and snorkel open a world of small salmon and trout fingerlings, large Cutthroat Trout, and an occasional large Spring Chinook Salmon.

Our cabin is a very comfortable A-frame which was completely remodeled in 2004. It features a very nice open kitchen fully supplied with everything you will need to prepare a feast. The floors are wood/laminate, with three large rugs.

A large bathroom has a shower/tub combination and large sink. A nice river rock hearth holds a wood stove to warm you, with firewood provided. A nice carpeted loft upstairs has a comfortable queen size bed and half bath, accessed by a spiral staircase.

Under one angled wall of the main floor is a nice sleeping bunk area with covered foam pads and storage underneath, suitable for sleeping bags for two or three. A set of three pads can be made into a queen sized bed on the floor. During spring and summer some people enjoy sleeping on the deck or pitching a tent outside for larger groups.

The campfire area just off the deck is a wonderful place to enjoy an evening of storytelling. Don't forget the marshmallows!

Great little cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

The cabin exceeded expectations. Very clean and comfy. They even built a fire for us before we got there! Met Joe on a couple of occasions and even got to try some of his home-brew (which was great, by the way). Cabin was so nice, we ended up spending most of our time there, rather than wandering around the nearby forests.

Will definitely be visiting again, next time I need to decompress out of the city.

Amazing cabin on the Smith River

  • 5 of 5

We had a amazing time in the Gilespie's cabin on the Smith River! The location was perfect for getting away from everything. The river nearby is beautiful and the cabin was clean, well-heated by a stove, and had lots of character. Joe was a great host and we really enjoyed talking with him.

There was limited electricity but we really didn't mind it (drinking wine by candlelight just fit with the aesthetics of the place) and Joe was in the process of fixing the battery system.

We definitely would love to visit again.

Awe inspiring!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect place to disconnect from your everyday and reconnect with yourself and your family/friends... loved the cabin and it’s surroundings. Being off the grid forced our kids to enjoy each other’s company... and we enjoyed their laughter. Just what we needed to finish our vacation through California! Started in southern part of the state and ended up in the northern end. By far, the prettiest landscape is up here. I recommend this place to anyone looking for beauty and tranquility. - Jarrod D. - Tennessee

The cabin was amazing!

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time! Joe and Sally were very welcoming and gave great suggestions for places to see and hikes to do. They even suggested some great local breweries which we enjoyed. The views of the river are beautiful! It is so clean and clear. We loved how cozy the cabin was, the fireplace was fantastic! Expect to totally unwind away from technology and just enjoy nature! Would love to come back in summer and jump in the river!

Awesome Thanksgiving Weekend in the Redwoods

  • 5 of 5

The A-frame cabin was great. Just a few steps to the river--which was too high and fast during a rainy weekend in November to consider swimming, but still. The cabin is in the woods half an hour east of Crescent City, but it was pretty easy to find (even at night).

Joe and Sally provided enough wood to build a fire every night of our 4-day stay, which kept everything nice and warm. The cabin is off the grid, so electricity comes from a generator that is usually run for a few hours in the evening. We needed to turn it on ourselves a few times while they were away, but it was easy to figure out with the instructions they provided. The kitchen was equipped (and large enough) to cook a Thanksgiving meal, and the fridge had no problem storing a fair amount of leftovers.

Our 2-year old absolutely loved running around outside and stomping in puddles. We had to watch her on the spiral staircase, but it certainly wasn't a big issue. All in all, it was a great place to spend a few days, and we'd love to go back sometime--especially when swimming in the river is on the table.

Quiet, relaxing and special

  • 5 of 5

What Can I say about this little A frame cabin? We let’s begin, when you finally reach your destination you are greeted but the sound of the clear Smith River. The cabin is adjacent to the owners Home but that does not take away from the feeling of solitude. Sally had a warm roaring fire started for us upon our arrival and had turned the internet off so we could fully disconnect from the typical day. The kitchen had all the utensils that were needed for cooking up most anything you like. We brought our own French press for coffee and it worked out great. The downstairs is a comfy living room with 3 smaller couches and plenty of board games to pass the time. The full downstairs bath is a great size, take showers together if you like a hot shower or just wait for the hot water heater to catch up.

To access the upstairs loft you must climb a spiral staircase, which at first is a bit scary but once you’re used to it going up and down is no problem. Upstairs there is a toilet and a sink which is very convenient. We did not get to really enjoy the deck due to the rain but what time we did spend gazing at the river was well worth it. There is plenty of firewood and if you need help Joe and Sally are right next door!

Things to consider when renting this awesome cabin:

1: you are about 30 minutes from the market and gas station.

2: Bring everything you will need to season your food. There was salt, pepper, olive oil, coffee, tea and a few other spices.

3: the fridge is small so keep in mind your space when shopping.

4: Don’t even worry about the neighbors, we never heard them and only saw them as we were leaving the final day.

5: Explore the area!!! There are so many things to do! They have pamphlets for activities near the cabin.

6: Please keep in mind that you will have to clean up after yourself, the cabin is clean upon arrival and you can tell that they take pride in it. Cleaning supplies are provided for you to clean before you leave.

Overall we loved the cabin and we will be coming back when we get the chance!
