Overview

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

After a fun drive down a curvy forest flanked road, you emerge into the sunlight with expansive fields on either side of you. You turn left down a dirt path that takes you by an old farmhouse. You dogleg around another field and enter the woods on a gravel road. When you get to the gate you step out. Through the trees, you can vaguely see the vastness of the James River and you hear the sound of a light breeze as it tumbles amid the leaves. Back in your vehicle you steer right, around the driveway loop and notice that you are at the peak of a hill that drops deeply into a great wooded ravine on either side.

Straight in front of you is the cottage which sits at the tip of the peninsula surrounded by views of the River. You shut off the vehicle and step outside. There is not another home or person in sight. NOW....You are officially on vacation. You stroll down the brown pebble path and past the shed that was built by boy scouts in the early 1900's. The breeze from the river feels stronger now and you can see the detail of the water and the white sandy beach below.

Just as you step onto the entry deck you notice two adult bald eagles soaring above the beach looking for prey. You didn't have to look up to see them they were at eye level with you. You are 70' above the river and the surrounding forest floor. The experience is like being in a treehouse; Albeit, a treehouse with a 4 acre yard, and parking for 20. The breeze is loud in the trees now and gives you the feeling of being blanketed by nature.

You jiggle the knob and are inside. Looking around there's nothing fancy, yet everything is special and somehow comforting. Hand made arts and crafts, Americana, books and furnishings you could only find in a cottage that's been a family heirloom for generations. You want to settle in but looking out the window you see an inviting path that winds down the hill and dissipates into the woods. You think, “I bet that leads to the river” and with that you are out the door on your first of many adventures.

The ferry ride is is a pleasant 15 minute site-see on the James River. There is an observation deck for looking at Historic Jamestown. Why Jeffrey Sadler chose Spring Grove

This property has been in the family since the early 1900's. The area's rich history and the tranquility and privacy of this property make it a family heirloom.

What makes this cottage unique

The connection to America's historic native americans, colonists and explorers is profound. Proof of this area's active past is evident in the fossils and other historic items that over the years have been found along the beachfront. A robust kayak paddle up or down the river provides views of several historic waterfront plantation homes. I enjoy putting myself in the shoes of an early american as I navigate the property. This helps me to appreciate the preservation of this area and it offers me a different perspective when viewing the modern world. A walk on the beach and the challenge of finding the smallest and largest of shark teeth is very therapeutic and is a must do on every visit. The 'missing' electronic devices like TV and internet provide us with the 'missing' time we never seem to have.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend at the cottage!! Thanks so much for sharing your home. Our dog had a blast running on the beach and playing fetch in the water. We only found two sharks teeth, but we collected lots of neat shells. We are looking forward to coming back over the summer to swim!

Notes:
4 ACRES OF WOODED PRIVACY!!! Loads of parking and a loop for easy trailering of boats and campers. Great views from approx. 70' above the James River. Path brings you to your own private white sandy beach. TONS OF PREHISTORIC SHARKS TEETH mixed in with the shells. Very quiet and romantic. Great for couples or for families. Beach area and river bottom is clean, safe and great for swimming. TWO KAYAKS AND A CANOE with paddles and 'high-end' life-vests, sized from toddler to He-Man. Lots of books and games. Watch out, you can loose/find yourself here! Cottage has been a family gathering place for 30 years and is as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans.

A marvelous place to get away from life’s distractions! A beautiful piece of property.

  • 4 of 5

The only reason I didn’t give the James River House 5 stars is because the path down to the river is too difficult for an older person or someone not particularly nimble to negotiate. My friend missed out on the wonderful beach area, though she seemed perfectly content to take in the views from the deck.

We truly loved this place, as did my two dogs. We saw a pair of bald eagles every day, collected fossilized shark teeth and petrified wood and walked up and down the totally deserted beach, made s’mores at the fire pit, soaked in the beauty of the trees, threw a tennis ball endlessly into the river for my dogs, visited the cantankerous black cows up the road, and sighed happily often. I definitely will try to go back. The drive down from Pittsburgh was worth it.

Peaceful, beautiful escape.....

  • 5 of 5

It's been 2 years since our first visit to the James River House, and again, we didn't want to leave. We even stayed an extra day this year, and still the time flew! My husband, Roger, and I traveled from Charleston, WV, along with our daughter, her husband and their 3 children. Two years can bring many changes and I wondered if our grandchildren would still enjoy the peaceful setting of the River House. Well, DUH!! They loved it more than ever! On our last visit we went to Jamestown and Busch Gardens, leaving out Williamsburg because everybody wanted to stay at the house enjoying the beach, hunting shark teeth (found 69 this trip), learning to kayak, picking up so many shells...so this year our plans were to ferry over the river to visit Williamsburg - which we did on 2 different days. Those were good days, of course, but our grandson who is now 9 years old, says he's glad we have the historical sites covered now so that on our next visit we can just stay here on the river. (I didn't have the heart to remind him that we haven't visited Yorktown yet.) My goodness, they love it! As I mentioned, time brings changes - I face knee replacement surgery on returning home, so the trips up and down the hill to the beach were more challenging this visit. But I would not trade a minute of our shared time, the meals we enjoyed cooking together, all of us giving thanks to the Lord for His Blessings upon us - our opportunity to experience the splendor of the river and the spiritual calm this home offers. I lost my mom recently and the quiet, peaceful serenity I enjoyed here has helped be a healing to my heart. The kitchen and bathroom have been updated beautifully since our last visit. I am so grateful that one day a couple of years ago my daughter said "Mom, look at this house on your computer - it sounds like a really neat place". We certainly appreciate Jeff's efforts to see that his "company" has all they need. After a while, it starts to feel like you're just coming home. Thanks so much!

Relaxing quiet location

  • 4 of 5

We spent a relaxing vacation at The River House. We saw several deer as we adventured out for our days. The ferry is great and so close that you can hop on over to Jamestown/Williamsburg for a quick meal; Carrot Tree Kitchen and Food For Thought are two I would highly recommend. We kayaked, canoed and enjoyed walking the river bank. Don’t forget your bug spray! I had it on but those bugs were nasty after all the rain we’ve had recently. The walk to river is a bit of a hike, so make sure you take all you want to enjoy at the river down the first time. Great place to relax your brain and enjoy the quiet.

Had a great time!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time spent at the James River house. He had just about everything you could think of which made our first family vacation with our 9 month old daughter and friends very enjoyable. We loved spending time at the private beach daily and our dogs enjoyed it as well. You cannot beach the privacy and how peaceful it is! We also enjoyed days spent at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg, and the winery. Thanks again Jeffrey!

Lovely Cottage Nestled in a Beautiful Forest Above a Private and Secluded Beach on the James River

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful time at this lovely little cottage on the James River. We chose this house because we were visiting Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Historic Jamestown and the Jamestown Settlement. We took the Scotland/Jamestown ferry to go back and forth. The house was fully stocked with every amenity imaginable! My husband and I drank our coffee on the deck every morning and the view and sounds from the woods and water was spectacular! Truly serene and picturesque! We took the kayak and canoe out one day and saw bald eagles. We found seven fossilized shark teeth on the river bank. The shells were enormous! They were the size of the palm of your hand. This was the perfect place to take a break from technology and reconnect with your family.

Map

Guests can take advantage of the cottage's location on the James River and they can go kayaking and canoeing straight from the private beach. This location offers acres of privacy. Two kayaks and a canoe with paddles and 'high-end' life-vests, sized from toddler to He-Man are included. There is a private sitting area away from the house with amazing views of the river. There is also a fire pit and seating on a 70' hilltop overlooking the river. The Chippokes Plantation Park is home to a historic farm museum along with a plethora of outdoor attractions including equestrian trails, a swimming pool, and picnic areas. It also hosts special events throughout the year, providing fun for all the family.

In the town of Surry guests can find a winery, several beautiful plantations including Smith's Fort Plantation, the Brandon Plantation and Gardens, and the Lightwood-Historic 18th Century Plantation House.

In the neighboring towns of Smithfield and Williamsburg guests can enjoy more of our nations history by visiting the colonial areas and the original fort at Jamestown. Busch Gardens and Water County are also fun for the whole family.
