Artist's Loft, with its incomparable view of the Harbor, Sailboats, Lighthouse and Coast Guard Station, is the only private home rental in Downtown Grand Marais on the Harbor. The view is what it is all about!

Artist's Loft is right in the heart of downtown Grand Marais on beautiful Harbor Park. It is a great home-base for enjoying the gentle activity of the Village or easily getting away for day trips to the BWCA. Drive up the Gunflint Trail for day adventures and hikes, but stay at the Artist Loft to experience all that downtown has to offer...just footsteps out the front door.

Artist's Loft has two bedrooms and one bathroom with a claw foot tub and a view of the Harbor. The Artist Loft is an upper unit with beautiful views & there is also a lower unit (vrbo 661724) where guests also occasionally stay. Both units have private, separate & secure entrances. Ask about renting both units for larger groups. Both units joined together can sleep 10!!

Even though Artist's Loft is right downtown on the harbor front, it is graced with a gorgeous secluded quiet off street wildflower garden with decks and lounging chairs and tables to relax in the sun or have a intimate outside breakfast lunch or dinner. Cook in with our fully equipped kitchen or get it to go, semi-catered from a choice of several fabulous restaurants. Your own private campfires in the backyard at night. You can even book & rent the backyard for private events, wedding receptions, or any other intimate get-togethers.

In the evening, step right next door to the Gunflint Tavern and enjoy a craft beer at their newly opened brewpub or Mojito in the 'Ravens Nest' lake-view deck and then listen to world class music in the early evening. The music at 'The Tavern' ranges from gentle Gypsy Jazz to Folk and Folk Rock for the occasional night of dancing. Also, the all-new Voyageur Brewing's taproom just opened and is a short 2 block walk! Keep in mind you are "downtown" Grand Marais, so there is the activity of being around the shopping, the activity of the tourists, and a little bit of the nightlife. But that's part of the fun. Fortunately that all ends pretty early in Grand Marais as everything pretty much shuts down around 10:00 or 11:00 pm.

Wake with the gulls in the morning sun and enjoy the quiet solitude of downtown as it gently comes to life. Walk to The Pie Place, The Crooked Spoon Restaurant, Angry Trout Cafe, Hughies Taco's, The Dockside Fish Market, the Gunflint Tavern, Voyageur Brewing, breakfast at the Blue Water Cafe and Donuts and World's Best Donuts!! All within 1-2 blocks! You have it all at Artists Loft. Oh, and don't forget that Legendary Sven and Ole's Pizza is right up the street.

The thing to remember about Artist's Loft is that every day is a beautiful magical day whether it is sunny and warm or stormy and wild; all year round nature's magic unfolds right in front of you over the greatest of lakes, Lake Superior.

A little History about Artist's Loft:

It was built in the early 1900s by Chet Boisvert. Chet was the village barber and the shop was equipped with showers for the lumberjacks to come in from the woods for a hot shower. He was also an avid Democrat and held party meetings at the Loft on Main Street. In the guest book it was found that his grandchildren had stayed here when our friend Stephen, the previous owner, first opened Artists Loft. They left an entry in the guestbook telling of heartwarming memories such as...

- ' The last time I slept in this bedroom was 43 years ago. I can still remember hearing my people cheering at 6 am when they announced the Victory of Harry Truman over Dewey in 1948!'

- 'I remember watching, from the front windows, pulp boats loading logs from the thousands of logs floating in the harbor'

You can still feel those memories at Artist's Loft as you gaze out the windows and still see fishing boats and sailboats bobbing in the breezes.

Come share the Magic!

About Joel Dodson

Hi there. Our names are Amy & Joel. We have two pups named Myron & Fletcher. We spend time on our classic 1967 Chris Craft Wooden Cruiser on the St. Croix River when we're not spending time in Grand Marais and traveling to other places.

Joel Dodson purchased this house in 2015

Why Joel Dodson chose Northeast

Joel spent his summers in Grand Marais as a child. After a long lapse in visiting the north shore, we started making it a yearly Memorial Day tradition, and for Max's birthday. After staying at the Artist Loft we fell in love with it immediately. There really is no other place like it in all of Grand Marais.

What makes this house unique

It's your own loft apartment, right in the heart of downtown Grand Marais. The Gunflint Tavern is your next door neighbor, and all of the other restaurants are a stones throw away. But seclude yourself if the eclectic backyard with your own fire, and a bottle of wine:)

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Ok, folks... This place is exactly how your flat would be if you were as hip as you wanted to be. It is perfect--funky and comfortable with a stack of albums that will make you want to stay in and spin them all night. We visited Grand Marais and stayed in this little slice of perfection on an unseasonably warm November weekend. It was amazing to wake up with the sun streaming in the window and see the lake just across the street. And the bed was super comfortable. The flat is perfect situated in this amazingly charming town; right on the main drag between a tavern with good food and a Ben Franklin that is way cooler than anyone expects a Ben Franklin to be. And the very best part of the whole deal was that we could bring our canine companion with us. It is a rare and wonderful thing, as most dog owners know. Joel was a great host. Communicated exactly what we needed in a timely manner. He happened to be in town the same weekend and we had a brief meeting and he seemed to be a lovely person. I would recommend staying at the artist loft without hesitation. It was a truly wonder weekend and we are looking forward to going back.”

Awesome views, great location

  • 4 of 5

My mom and I loved our stay. The views from the front windows were spectacular. We enjoyed just looking out the windows and enjoying the views while listening to the records that were available. The décor was cute and quirky, and although it was too cold to use the backyard, it looked nice.

The negatives:

-no railing on the stairs - Although my mom was glad we rented the loft and not the storefront (views!), no railing on the stairs made it a little difficult for her.

-the bathroom - It was small and with the window to the front bedroom it didn't feel private enough for me. The tub is cute, but not practical. I stubbed my toe a couple of times on the platform it is sitting on, and while there is a hand rail next to the tub I was still wary stepping out of the tub. My mom wouldn't use the tub at all.

Overall, it is a wonderful little property.

Outstanding location in a gorgeous small town

  • 5 of 5

We spent the weekend in Grand Marais, based out of the Artist Loft. We traveled to state parks during the day and visited shops/restaurants in the evenings. The Artist's Loft is centrally located to much of what Grand Marais has to offerl; we were able to walk to dinner / drinks every night, and the parking spot behind the place was quite convenient as the downtown started to fill up.

We also brought along our dog, so having a place that was pet friendly was a huge help.

The loft itself is quite nicely appointed. It has an eclectic, "up north" feeling. If you wanted to stay for a longer trip, the kitchen and appliances would make cooking in a breeze. We want to head back soon!

a magical mid-week weekend

  • 5 of 5

bringing my friends up to my hometown to stay in the apartment I grew up in was a truly unforgettable time. This place has so many memories that I hold dear to my heart, and that its magic and nostalgia has been so brilliantly preserved is truly such a blessing. Thanks so much for allowing this opportunity, Joel! It was a wonderful trip.

Loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was super eclectic and fun, and had everything we needed! We woke up next to a gorgeous view of lake Superior - such a great location. Next door is a great tavern, and everything you'd need is within walking distance - restaurants, breweries, pharmacy, groceries, the lake! Joel was very easy to coordinate with and spelled out all the details we needed for our stay. I highly recommend staying here. We had such a wonderful experience.

Cute, clean and perfect location.

Loved our stay. The loft is warm and cozy. Harbor bedroom view is spectacular, but can be loud from the bar crowd. Back room is quiet and snuggly, just doesn't have the breathtaking view.

Fun place in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Really cool place in one of my favorite little towns (bonus points for being literally next door to the Gunflint Tavern and a one block walk to Voyageur Brewing). The artist loft provides a great view of the harbor out the living room which is also great people watching. Space is small but well used (someone went to IKEA!) and funky eclectic decor adds to a fun weekend getaway with friends. The backyard patio is amazing except you can't use it in the cold of winter. Turntable and LP collection make for great nostalgic entertainment!

Only complaints are lack of toiletries and the stovetop burners (and oven racks, maybe it's the floor?) are tilted so cooking or baking are less than ideal if you are hoping for things to come out even. There is also a weird wonky couch the rolls out from under you unless you put a shoe with grippy rubber sole under the big wheel on one side, very odd piece of furniture.

Had a great time and would rent it again.
