We prefer to start rentals on weekends, but we have flexibility.
Wolves, bear, moose and elk abound in our area of Yellowstone and the Beartooth Mountains. There are beautiful mountain views from the back deck, and front windows. Some of the best wild trout fishing in the world is minutes from the house. These include the Yellowstone River, Lamar River, Slough Creek, Soda Butte Creek, and the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone. This is a summer rental only!
A great family day can be spent touring the famous features of Yellowstone or taking a day trip to Cody, WY to see the Wild Bill Cody Museum, a grnuine rodeo nightly, a gun fight at the original Irma Hotel, good food, and many shops including the Sierra Outlet. Best time for animal watching is June and early July, while the best time for fishing is mid July through September. Hiking is fabulous anytime.
The house is clean, spacious and comfortable, with a Great Room and fireplace, modern kitchen and laundry with half bath on first floor. Second floor has two very large bedrooms: One has three single beds and the other a queen bed and a single. This arrangement will sleep a family of six or 5 singles. Also a newly remodeled full bathroom upstairs.
Outside thre is a rear deck with gorgeous mountain vies so close you feel like you can reach out and touch them. There is a grill and patio furniture for outdoor dining. There is also a very small stream in the yard which holds a few native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. Very private yard.

About Marcia Woolman
My husband Hank and I have over the years, run a fly fishing school, guided for 10 years in YNP, Hank builds bamboo fly rods. In our non-summer home in VA we fox hunt on horseback and are active conservationists. We are life members of Trout Unlimited, and we both have received numerous awards from that organization. Presently, I am a retired teacher who writes Outdoor columns for a magazine and a local newspaper, and I have had an article on Yellowstone Cutthroat trout printed in Fly Fisherman Magazine.
Marcia Woolman purchased this House in 1992
Why Marcia Woolman chose Silver Gate
We are 20 minutes from the Lamar Valley which showcase wolves, grizzly, elk, deer, and many others depending on your interests and time of year and time of day to view them. This area is considered the best animal viewing in the Park. Also called the Serengeti of N. America. Hiking in our area can be a wonderful family hike to Trout Lake which is less than a mile long and takes you to a large lake with a walking trail around it, and besides getting to see huge trout there are also fish eating animals in the area as well.
What makes this House unique
We are one of the closest residences to YNP in any of the gateway communities. In two minutes you can be at the NE gate. The Lamar Valley is 25 minutes and has the best wildlife viewing in the Park for wolves, bears, and bison.

Great home in a wonderful place
This is my group's second stay at the Woolman's cabin in Silvergate. To my mind there isn't a better spot for a fly fisherman or lover of nature. The wonderful Log Cabin restaurant is 1 minute away. Not only is great fishing in the park just a few minutes away, but there is free long distance and wifi in the house. It is hard not to be a happy camper with the soda Butte, Lamar and Slough creek just a cup of coffee away! The cabin is clean and ready at arrival. We have found the Owners to be responsive when things arise needing attention. Their long history in the area makes needed services accessible to them. I can certainly understand why the reviews are so positive! If you want a cozy cabin in the middle of paradise check this place out!
I don't want to write a bad review, but we were unhappy with the stay.
I would not recommend this house to anyone.
It snowed the entire week this renter was there!!. He had a miserable time because of the weather. We are a summer rental only. He did not want to have to be bothered with building a fire in the wood stove. He could not find a snow shovel. Really, who that rents only June through September has a snow shovel?? In a pinch a regular shovel should do, right,?? I am sorry. I can not control the weather. After 100 percent five star ratings, I think this is an unfair rating.
Location location location.
This log cabin was very nice, we are so glad we selected it for our vacation. The cabin was fully furnished and I do mean fully!
The bed was very comfortable and the house is clean. This is a quiet very remote location so your cell phone may not have service but the owner provided a landline and wifi so you can check on the rest of the world (if you want to). Now I came here primarily for photography and the location cannot be beat. I would leave before first light enter Yellowstone's NE entrance which is only 0.5 miles away and be in Lamar Valley in 30 minutes. We saw and photographed Wolves, Big horn sheep, Antelope, Elk, Fox, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Grizzley Bear, and of heards of Bison. There are a few stores and very good restaurant near the the cabin if you need them. We drove near all the other entrances in the park and in my opinion this is the most beautiful and quiet. I was a little reluctant to write this review because I would like to keep this location my secret but that would just be greedy.
It is so wonderful to have a guest who shares our feelings about or location and our home. It is such a Joy to know others love it too.
Great time with great people
We really enjoyed out time there. There fishing was good and the house was great!
We enjoyed these guests very much as they fulfilled a longtime goal of catching native Yellowstone Cutthroat trout. They loved the beautiful places that the fishing took them both on horseback and hiking. A very successful vacation for sure.
Great location away from it all. Beautiful area. Friendly small town
Great nearby waterfall to hike to. Saw buffalo, elk, a deer and a fox at the house in the first 12 hrs! Great nearby restaurants and no traffic entering or exiting yellowstone from this entrance. Also thanks to the owners who left us 3 cans of bear spray to borrow while we're hiking daily. Saw lots of bears and wolves but fortunately didn't have to use the spray.
This unsolicited, but appreciated, review of your visit at our home in Silver Gate will help others see that our home is everything we promised, and in a perfect location to see the wildlife in Yellowstone.
Doesn't Get Better
“Thanks for providing us with a “base camp” for our Yellowstone Adventure. We all had a great time at your Silver Gate Lodge. Marcia, a special thanks to you! We are all grateful for your willingness to share knowledge of flies, locations to fish, and techniques to catch ‘em.” Jim & the Super Secret Fly Fishers.”
Day trip to Cody, WY for Wild Bill Cody Museum, nightly full fledged rodeo.
