Canoncito Creek Retreat - a Hideaway Surrounded by Wilderness

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Just a few miles as the crow flies from Abiquiu, Cañones is an untouched hamlet at the end of a county road and at the mouth of a deep canyon.

Just over two miles into the canyon the Cañoncito Seco, a spring-fed creek (not dry at all) descends from high up on Polvadera Peak and flows into Cañones Creek. There, our Cañoncito Creek Retreat is a most comfortable location from which to explore large parts of Santa Fe National Forest. Or just to rest and relax.

The Retreat is a hideaway deep in the canyon surrounded by impressive mesas. No traffic can be heard or seen, privacy and peace are absolute.

Large herds of elk and wild turkey can be met on the few explored trails. Or even better, you cut your own trail through this spectacular wilderness. Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River Wilderness, Ghost Ranch are just a short (but sensational) drive away. Fish in the creek, search for wild mushrooms, collect colorful stones.

Canoncito Creek Retreat

  • 4 of 5

The house and surrounding area was beautiful. We had a little trouble finding the house in the rain, but once we arrived we had a great time. The weather cleared and we hiked the beautiful surrounding areas around Ghost Ranch, Chimney Rock, Plaza Blanca, Abiuqui Lake, Christ of the Desert Monastery, Echo Amphitheater and other areas. the location of the house was perfect for this. Thank you.

A perfect setting!

  • 5 of 5

This is such a spectacular and amazing place! The cabin is spacious, very clean, and in such a beautiful, peaceful setting. We hiked up behind the cabin into the National forest every day of our stay, and it's hard to even describe the raw and natural beauty of the canyon. This is the perfect getaway for someone who wants to escape from the noise and chaos of urban life - we couldn't believe the serene and total silence in the canyon! Bring your own food to cook in the well stocked kitchen, eat outside on the patio, enjoy the hummingbirds and other wildlife (we watched squirrels playing in the treetops narrowly escape the claws of a hawk!). I've hiked all over, and I absolutely loved the hikes we were able to do - from very easy to very strenuous. It's up there with one of my favorite places I've ever hiked. We will definitely go back to this place!

A private and remote place to get away.

  • 5 of 5

The house is located in a very secluded location which provides a quiet atmosphere to relax and enjoy the beauty of the canyon. The upper balconies offer amazing views of the canyon walls and some of the surrounding peaks. If you enjoy birds this places has many of them in the morning.

The inside of the home is very roomy and comfortable and provides a nice place to return to after a day exporing the area.

The house is located close enough to other activities such as hiking around Abiquiu Lake or just taking scenic drive along highway 96. There is also some great hiking to do around the canyon itself if you don't feel like driving.

When we arrived the home was very clean and neat. We were impressed with all the space the home had.

If you are looking for a place to stay that offers a quiet, peaceful, and remote location this is it! We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Make sure that you get directions to the house before arriving in the area.

Wonderful remote retreat

  • 4 of 5

The place is great to stay. It is spacious and beautiful. We had a problem with the water and the caretaker came right out to fix it. He was very nice and made sure everything was working correctly. The only reasons I didn't give it 4 stars was lack of a king size bed (we are spoiled on that, so it shouldn't be a problem for most), and the number of cows right around the house. I'm not sure if there was a fence down or not, but we had a number of cattle in the yard throughout the day. They bring a certain rustic odor and flies. That said, we would certainly consider staying there again.

Owner's Response: Sorry about the cattle. This is the time of year where many of our neighbors have run out of feed for their cattle but it is too early to take them up to National Forest for the summer. The result is that some cattle break through fences simply by throwing their weight against them and knocking a section down. Our neighbor had recently died and there was no one to mind his cattle.
