About this property

The Sound Castle in KDH

Three bedroom, two bath home located in the heart of Kill Devil Hills! For 2025, Sunday check-in/check-out. This home is our little sanctuary on the sound side of the OBX. A 2 minute drive to the beach. From rocking chairs on the front porch to outdoor furniture and a swing downstairs on the carport area, there's room for everyone to find their own little corner for solitude or gather together for a homestyle happy hour.

There are 2 beach chairs and several body boards/skim boards available for use during your stay.

Please read rules for our home rental before reserving. We do require a minimum age of 25 to rent. We do require an ID check. We require the person renting our home be present in our home for the duration of the rental period. (I.e. Parents reserving our home on behalf of underage children and not being present will result in cancellation of reservation. This can result in removal from our home if discovered during the rental period and there will be no refunds issued.)

Strip any used beds and gather used towels
Remove personal items, remove leftover food and drinks, and take out the trash
Turn off the lights and lock the doors
Please place all dirty towels in the bathtub in the hallway bathroom.
Please place trash in the trash can outside.
Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.
Due to unforeseen events, we require the person reserving the home to send a copy of their ID at the time of reservation showing date of birth.
We require the person making the reservation also be part of the guests staying in our home for the duration of the rental period.
Failure to abide by rules will result in cancellation of reservation, including removal from property with no refund.

Central location

The property is located right between the beach and the sound. We rented bikes and rode the multi-use path by the sound throughout the week. We visited the Nags Head Nature Preserve, Jockey’s Ridge State Park, Kitty Hawk, the Avalon Pier Beach, caught ghost crabs, went to SugarLand, the Wright Brothers Museum land, and the various coffee places nearby. This really is central to all things and the house is very clean and comfortable. We loved the Avalon Pier fireworks for the 4th of July. They were the best I’ve ever seen. Very enjoyable stay.

Little get away from reality

This was the perfect get away, just what me and my boyfriend needed. The location is perfect and you’re near everything! You can walk to the beach or the sound, if you forget something at the store its only 2 stop lights away. Theres many restaurants all around. Sara was absolutely amazing, anything we needed she responded super quick, and was really understanding. We will definitely be coming back!!

Perfect for 6!

Perfect space for our group of 6! My favorite rental so far. Well stocked kitchen with pots/pans and flatware for our group that cooked every night. Several nice beach chairs and a few boogie boards. Washer/dryer and central air worked very well. A walkable distance to the beach, but our group decided to drive to a nearby public access with free parking (and a wash station/bathrooms) because of the 5 lane road to cross if walking. Lifeguards were stationed there as well as at the pier, which was great! Worked perfectly.

Would not stay again

We arrived and found poop marks on the bottom of the hallway bathroom toilet seat. Beds were not comfortable, worse than hotel. The appliances need replace, the refrigerator settings had to be turned all the way down to keep things cold and it was very noisy. Deck needs to be stained. Kitchen wasn’t supplied very well to be able to cook. Property owner filed a damaged claim for removing two safety door knob covers for toddler and replace one door knob for substantial amount of money which is crazy. There was no door knob damaged when we stayed either. We left the house the way we found it, we are very clean people. We left the door knob safety covers in case someone else wants to use them as the stairs are dangerous for toddlers.

Great stay

Had a great stay at this property. Location is within walking distance to beach and bay, but with kids and tons of beach gear, it's much easier to hop in the car, and drive to any number of free public parking spots right next to the beach. We visited a different beach everyday and always found free public parking with a washoff area. As far as the house, it's perfectly adequate. Very good a/c, two full bathrooms with bathtubs (great for kids), open concept living, dining, and kitchen area. There is also a very nice deck and upper deck and parking area underneath the house. Also a nice sitting area and outside shower. Kitchen was adequately stocked. Only negative, which turned out to be a positive, was the internet seemed a bit slow for streaming on the tv, which probably isn't the owner's fault. It turned out to be a good thing anyway, because our kids would get frustrated watching youtube stall out a bunch of times that they would shut it off and want to engage with the family. Imagine that! There are some games, but not a huge collection, so bring your favorite games and engage with your kids! Great location, everything you could need is only a very short hop away. Also much cheaper than having an "ocean view" which usually means a sliver of an ocean view in the distance, and it's a single family house, not a condo, duplex or townhouse, in a quiet neighborhood. Overall, great stay, great trip, 10/10!

Unforgivable owner

So I was trying to be pleasant with owner when she asked me for a review but Sara’s response was horrible. We showed up to the house and was hoping to get in a bit early as she said we probably could. Turns out she said the last people left the house a mess and she needed more time to clean. Ok. Fine. But when we got there, there was dishes left in dishwasher and someone used the crock pot and it came out with food everywhere. Who the heck has to do dishes when they show up to a house that is supposed to be clean? Floors were covered in sand. Cheerios in every single bed, couch, under couches etc. This after Sara said she had to spend extra time cleaning from her last “disaster” tenant. Well now she is complaining we left the house a mess. Hmmm. Sounds like Sara is a pessimist and doesn’t like tenants. We took videos of the house when we left just to prove her wrong. She said she needed 3 cleaners for 6 hours to clean a house we stayed in with all adults? Stop Sara. You’re lying and we have videos to prove you wrong. The propane tank was empty and I had to fill. The outdoor shower is broken and all they wanted me to do was turn this valve it that and I know plumbing and told them it was broken but they didn’t fix that either. Oh and then the neighbor. Sara forgets to tell everyone who rents about the 15 people living in the slum that is right next to theirs. I mean slum. Half torn down pool. Piles of crap everywhere. Sara is a liar. Do not rent

Peaceful and Restful Week

Our family enjoyed a wonderful week away at Sara's peaceful home. The entire process from arrival to departure was seamless. The space was clean and the availability of beach items was an added bonus. The kitchen was well stocked with all that we needed and even had items left by others for use. Any vacationer is fortunate to stay in this home.

We fell in love with the Outer Banks on our first visit and knew we had to have a home there 'someday'. Someday came quicker than expected. My husband and I met later in our lives and did not have children. So, we spent our child's college fund on our first beach box in the OBX. We love the beach and love living life outdoors!

Why they chose this property

Every friend, family member, and guest who stays at our property share the same feeling afterwards: WE LOVE THIS HOUSE! We have easy access to everything. The side streets (aka back roads) are easy to navigate to get to the grocery store, coffee, restaurants and other adventures often without needing to hit Croatan Highway.

What makes this property unique

This house has had so many happy celebrations. There is a lot of love and laughter born out of this home. It is definitely our little hideaway and hope that you will discover that for yourselves. Long walks along the sound on Bay Drive are one of my most favorite things to do. We have biked down to the Wright Brothers Memorial - the multi-use path is very easy to follow! There's a gazebo stretching out into the water a few blocks down from us that is a prime spot for sunsets.

We are truly in the heart of KDH. Just about everything you could need is either 5 miles north or south! Our neighborhood is a good mix of locals and rentals. Just a quick hop across Croatan Highway from the beach.
