Lucy & Greg Young purchased this house in 1957
Hemlock Harbor has been in the family since 1957. We love the setting and the house and enjoy sharing it with others who appreciate it. We rent the property to pay the outrageously high property taxes!
Hemlock is a marvelous place to relax, gather with family and friends, write/paint/create (27 books were written here) and play. The Great Room is the gathering place inside with a huge table and benches for eating, playing cards, visiting or working on a project in front of the fire or looking out over the Lake. Player piano and marimba provide lively entertainment if you don't want to watch Cable or just read in the seating area. Five bedrooms provide plenty of space; there are seating areas and desks in most. Ground floor wheelchair accessible.
There is limited access to the pristine class 'A' waters of Lake Sunapee and very few properties with 550' of shoreline in a quiet cove. We can see neighbors' docks but no other houses. Winter is magical whether there is snow over the ice for cross country skiing and skidooing or clear for skating. It's a lovely place, charming, not flashy or modern but with what a person really needs available.
Consider an off season retreat with family or friends. Facilitate a retreat for writers, scrabble players, kayakers, photographers. Proprietor available to prepare meals for groups if pre-arranged.
We had so much fun at Hemlock Harbor lake house...there is so much to do!! Fishing off the dock, kayaking and canoeing, and swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake Sunapee. Plus, it's just a short walk to town for some fun!
Lucy and Greg were incredible hosts, making sure we were comfortable, showing us the ropes, and letting us play with all the toys! Hopefully, we didn’t disturb them (or the neighbors) too much with our very frequent (and sometimes late night) player piano playing! That was so much fun (and what a workout!)
Everything was just awesome, we have rented a lot of places, and these guys do it top notch (there’s nothing worse than checking in only to find out that toilet paper and dish soap aren’t supplied!! They go way, way, way, above and beyond that!)
We truly had a great time, if we do Sunapee again, they our first call!
I rented 3 houses on Sunapee for a family wedding nearby and this house was just perfect. We had a pre festivities party and the deck was just the right place to be comfortable. The setting is spectacular and the owners were so helpful with so many things from booking to putting up a sign to let people know that we were staying there. The eclectic nature of the house is charming and the location is wonderful but quiet. This was the house we all gathered at for the down times because it just was comfortable and just fit us all whether on the dock or deck or inside. This is a very special place and is even better than advertised. I hope we can do it again as I feel Lucy and Greg are now friends.
I've been meaning to write this for a while, but never got around to it. But this place definitely deserves a 5 Star rating. We had a guys weekend at this location about 2 years ago and it was perfect. It was the ideal spot for just eating, drinking, swimming out to the rocks, playing poker, and spending hours playing the ring toss game. It's not your ordinary bar version, but a 30ft+ rope version. I'm pretty sure some of the guys are already planning another escape to this little getaway after the summer madness is over.
With Hurricane Irene bearing down on New England, it wasn't at all clear that our planned vacation on Sunapee would work out...but we ended up with a perfect week of weather, in as an idyllic a spot as you can find on the Big Lake, tucked in the back of a quiet cove with a long water view out through the channel and Mt. Sunapee in the distance. You can see how the house survived the 1938 hurricane. Swimming was great for the kids (lots to explore in the rocky waters), the dock accomodated the power boat (tho some navigation in the rocky channel is needed...), the entertainment areas of the house wonderful for us and the friends who visited, house large enough to provide quiet spaces when needed, and the four plus acres around the house make it very private indeed. The Youngs are interesting/interested people and perfect hosts...Greg stayed in the carriage house next door during the hurricane to make sure all was well, and Mary a wealth of information on the pedigree of the old house and the surrounding area. We'll be back....
We have been coming to Hemlock Harbor with our extended family for a number of years now. We have enjoyed our time here more and more every year. All members of our family, from babies to grandparents, have enjoyed spending time at this wonderful house.
The house is spacious and overflowing with charm. The master bedroom is large and has its own access to the deck overlooking the lake. Everyone morning we would wake up to a picturesque view of the lake out our window. There is a large porch on the back of the house with a table that had room for our whole family. There is another large table in the great room in front of a beautiful stone fireplace, which was a great place for games in evening. The kitchen is well stocked with whatever you need. There is a large pantry and two refrigerators which is wonderful when feeding a large group.
The location is fabulous. It is located on a quiet cove that is perfect for kayaking, swimming or just relaxing. They have a great dock, with room to tie up our power boat and canoe. The house is located at lake level, not that common on Lake Sunapee, which makes it easy for the youngest and oldest members of the family to access the water. The property is very private making you feel that you almost have the lake to yourself. The house is located not from Sunapee Harbor. My sister and I enjoyed many early morning walks along the lake to the Harbor.
Finally, Lucy and Greg are wonderful hosts. They go out of their way to make you feel at home in their house and truly seem to enjoy sharing their little bit of paradise with others.
Hemlock Harbor is very private. The house is located in a harbor with a few other houses that are not visible from our house. However, Sunapee Harbor is within walking distance and there is a lot of activity there during the summer.
