About Colette Zygmont

I bought this house when I was single, when it was a 2 bedroom/2 bath house. My chiropractic practice is on S.Lamar and in the style of keeping life simple, I wanted a house in 78704. When I walked into this house, it spoke to me. The house oozes comfort with the perfect mixture of space and class. I kept adding on to the house, expanding the inside and outside as husband and children were added to the mix. There is also a significant focus on green building design as the house is solar-electric and has a tankless hot water heater. The studio on the 3rd floor has its own Japanese Fujitsu ac/heat unit.

Colette Zygmont purchased this house in 1994

Why Colette Zygmont chose Zilker

I fell in love with this house in 1994 when I bought it for myself and have lived there for 15 years and am finally moving on and choosing to share it with many rather than sell it. I chose this house based on the unique lay out and huge kitchen/great room. (800 sq.ft) I love cooking and entertaining and this spread is perfect for that. The original house was built in 1932 and has beautiful original wood floors and lots of light from many windows including stained glass windows in the living room. The addition, built in 2002 by my brother, added 3 more bedrooms and a yoga/meditation studio. (also sleeps two who prefers star gazing) The new addition has 2500 sq. ft of gorgeous maple floors, antique glass tile and Mexican travertine tile in the bathrooms. This house is nestled in 78704, the quintessential hip Austin neighborhood...walking distance from Barton Springs and the hike and bike trail around Lady Bird Lake as well as the Greenbelt, Austin's unique inner city trail system perfect for hikers and mountain bikers. It is also walking distance to a super cool kava bar that also serves coffee and the Juiceland as well as all the restaurants on Barton Springs Rd. The Alamo Draft House (an Austin must) is just 5 minutes the other direction and now, also walkable, is High Ball, an adult vintage bowling alley which is a ton of fun for those with a passion for bowling. Enjoy!

What makes this house unique

This house delights all visitors. There cannot be a more wonderful place for family gatherings because of the gigantic kitchen and variety of things to choose from. Because of the house's size, many people can be doing many different things and give each other space to spread out and relax. It has a third floor tower room that has views of downtown, which is a great place to watch fireworks on July 4th. Everything about the house spells E N T E R T A I N I N G.

Guestbook comments from the owner

House is great. Way bigger than the pics make it look.

VRBO Bear had a great stay at this nice Austin, TX home in Barton Heights area!

VRBO Bear stayed here

Oct 12, 2010

Wow! This was the perfect house for a classy bear like me during my visit to Austin, Texas. From the top floor “yogi” room where I did my “yoga” bear exercises all the way down to the 1st floor, this amazing house was a wonderful place to stay. There was lots of space for my friends to visit together, but plenty of individual retreat space as well so we could have quiet time when we wanted it. This home was located in a nice residential neighborhood, several blocks from the main road. There were large yards and lots of big trees, but we were still a very short drive from downtown and the airport, so it was easy to get around the fun city of Austin. Our hostess was wonderful – she left DVDs, CDs and lots of books here for us to enjoy. She has decorated this house with many fun extras – and there’s a fireplace, a hot tub, BBQ grill, huge multi-level deck, and even a jungle gym for the “cubs” to play on in the enclosed back yard. We loved the special touches – towels near the hot tub, a welcome sheet that explained where to find things and how to lock up the house, stained glass, beautiful art pieces, and a hammock. We felt at home and very welcomed. The kitchen was huge, with many modern conveniences. I loved the way it opened up into the great room (with fireplace) so that the folks cooking or eating in the kitchen could still be part of the conversation with the folks relaxing on the couch. The flat screen TV was in the “other” living room so that visiting and TV watching didn’t have to happen in the same room. Lots of windows throughout on every side along with skylights made this house very cheery and bright. Everything was clean and shiny. All in all, this lovely home has left me with perfect memories of my recent trip to Austin. The VRBO Bear

Lovely gem for a large group.

  • 5 of 5

The Awesome Little Palace is a great place in Austin for large groups. There are plenty of common spaces [front living room, big kitchen island, den, sitting area in main hallway], and the bedrooms are well spread out in the house. There is plenty of closet space. The home was immaculately clean, and has enough room for several cars to park off the street.

Our only negatives about the house were these: First, two of the tubs did not have stoppers for the drains. We had allocated bedrooms according to who prefers to take baths, and it was a bit annoying to learn that two of those tubs weren't useable except as showers. Second, a couple of the rooms do not have overhead lighting, and the lamps were loaded with low-watt bulbs. This made visibility an issue. On top of that, in one of the rooms, one of the lamps' bulb was burned out. [Speaking of lighting - there are large panels with many switches in various spots in the house; it would be helpful if the switches were labelled as to which switch works outside lights, hall light, closet, whatever. This is a minor suggestion.]

Overall, we loved the house and would rent it again without hesitation. We were in Austin for a family wedding, and loved the location as well as the space and bedroom configuration. The landlord was attentive to requests in advance, which we appreciated.

Owner's Response: Hi Sabrina, Thanks for the feedback. After the last guest mentioned the lighting situation, I decided it was time for me to check in for a couple of days to have a true experience of the house. And you're right! Lightbulbs are out everywhere! I'm going to buy a bunch of those 10 year LED light bulbs so it won't be an issue again for a long time. A lot of the light switches are connected to outside lights so it's difficult to tell what turns on when. I'll buy a labeler and sort that out. I sure wish you had texted me while you were here about 2 of the 4 bathtubs not having stoppers. Indeed, the downstairs master bath's stopper was in the door to the left of the bath tub. Sorry you didn't find it. I have no idea when the claw foot tub stopper went missing. I'm on it, getting another one. I sure hope you took advantage of the upstairs master bath and the Jack n Jill baths. Those are actually the nicest ones! I can't believe what a mess the kitchen drawers are! I'm so glad you thought the house was immaculate because I have every utensil out of the drawers and cupboards and am sterilizing and re-organizing. That only lasts so long, however, in a house that holds 13 people every weekend. Thanks so much for the feedback! I'm taking care of business.

Owner's Response: What a great review! That was helpful and I’m listening. I’m glad you enjoyed the house otherwise. I agree. There are tons of light switches in that house. Some of them are on duel light switches so it’s hard to figure out. I also noticed a few lightbulbs are out, which must have been frustrating. I will make sure to go through the house and replace all non-functioning lightbulbs. I really dislike that oven. A high end appliance company in town replaced the broken microwave and oven combo while I was itravelling n Europe a couple years ago They replaced it with a freakishly small oven, which is so dumb for such a large house. I’m sorry it showed up as a hassle for you. I can stuff a turkey in it but you have to find the right pan! Sure hope the Christmas cookies turned out despite the challenge.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad your 'retreat' worked out. I think it's worthy to add that the house slept 8 'single' people well. The house easily sleeps 14 if they are coupled! So glad to hear you could find everything you needed in the kitchen. I love that kitchen! Welcome back any time.
