Over all, the Sunset Cottage is a quaint getaway home that is perfect for families of four or five.
This was our first trip to Vermont and first experience with VRBO, and we plan to repeat both. The Sunset Cottage was a perfect option for us in an effort to allow us to host a few meals for our son who is attending college in the area and to enjoy our evenings. The younger kids retreated upstairs to their own loft with the TV, and the rest of us could enjoy some cards and conversation. At night, the boys slept on the fold out couch, our daughter slept in the loft on that bed, and my wife and I had a private room to ourselves.
There were only two concerns that kept me from rating five stars. The first was that we vacuumed when we got there as well as when we were leaving, as the rugs needed some cleaning. The prior visitors had not taken care of those responsibilities. The second was the oven, which had two minor issues. Firstly, that it is not full sized, which I had not realized ahead of time, so our baking pans didn't fit. We ended up purchasing bread from the general store as we didn't have a way to bake the biscuits we were making from scratch. Secondly, being unfamiliar with a gas oven that needed lit each time it was used, we struggled each time we used it. That was the only item in the house that didn't have instructions but could have used them.
Over all, the Sunset Cottage is a quaint getaway home that is perfect for families of four or five. It is the type of place that we would look for if we were in the market for one. It has a well stocked kitchen, plenty of linens, is well heated, good water pressure all around, and a very pleasant setting, even in mud season! You will not be disappointed with your stay at the Sunset.
Great simple cottage style house in farm country. Everything you need for a long weekend. Close to Parker Pie and Hill Farmstead. Everything was as advertised. Owners were incredibly responsive and helpful. Gas stove adds comfort on cold nights :)
Close (enough!) to ski resorts
We loved our time here! 45 minutes to an hour to many of the ski resorts. Perfect for us :)
Charming decor. Loved the unique art-work!
A very nice place overall- cozy, secluded, nice fireplace, nice windows and light, great for getting work done or as a base for outdoor activities and it's not far from Craftsbury for supplies. The property is fairly well screened from the surrounding agricultural fields, but it may not be super pleasant to go outside at certain times of year when the manure spreaders are moving. Otherwise, it was very nice.
We enjoyed our brief stay while we were in town for a wedding nearby. The house was clean and cozy. The kitchen is great and we may return to stay longer and cook some meals and relax on the porch. Note: If you don't want to drink the well water you should bring water to drink even if you don't plan to cook much.
Well appointed get-away
My dog and I spent 2 nights and enjoyed the quiet environment. The inside of the cabin was tasteful and full of nice touches including many original Merrill Densmore paintings. Internet and Cable TV are available although during the day the connectivity was slow to non-existant however early morning and after 7:00 PM it was very acceptable. An awesome kitchen with toaster oven, microwave, Keurig and drip coffee makers, gas stove, full size refrigerator, cooking and serving ware, in addition to a large BBQ grill make it easy to do your own cooking. There is a nice country store and grocery in Greensboro which is not far away. Don't forget to bring your own coffee and a jug of pure water for drinking!
The cabin is located in farm country and very private. Nearby are lakes, hiking and other vacation destinations. The lawns and landscaping are lovely and well maintained. If you are looking for a nice get-away look no further.
Enjoy the beauty of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, the rural country side, the Green Mountains and the many outdoor activities in any season of the year. Nearby are 5 major skiing & snowboarding areas, Cross Country ski on over 100 km of groomed trails at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, snowmobile to the door on the VAST trails. In the summer, nearby hiking trails, bird watching, numerous lakes, bike trails, sculling, golf, boating and sailing, etc. Stowe is within an hour. Canada is less than an hour and Montreal is about 2 hours.
Other Activities: Near Craftsbury Outdoor Ctr & VATS trails
Golf: Several public and semi-private courses are within an hour of the cottage, including the new championship course at Jay Peak.
Ski: Stowe, Smuggler's Notch, Burke and Jay Peak are within an hours drive PLUS nearby Craftsbury Outdoor Center and Highland Lodge for cross country skiing.
