About this property

Prince of Wales House - a Poshabodes Holiday Home!

Summary:
Welcome to Prince of Wales House on Captain's Row, a sumptuous retreat boasting a phenomenal location in the heart of Old Town Alexandria! This 3-story, 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom Federal townhouse puts you just one block from the waterfront and one block from bustling King Street, lined with popular shops and restaurants. This home is part of picturesque Captain’s Row, the oldest cobblestone street in the city. Forming a tree-lined block of beautiful brick façades and gas lanterns, this scenic stretch is emblematic of the charm and history of Old Town.

The Space:
The best of Old Town—restaurants, shops, parks, and a waterfront dock—is literally just steps from this home. Should you decide to explore the area by car, you can make use of a rarity in Old Town—two private off-street parking spaces perfectly suited to mid-sized cars (or two SUVs for those with maneuvering talent). You couldn’t pick a better place to stay to be close to all the action!

About this Property
Built in 1780 by Captain John Harper, Prince of Wales House exhibits all the artistry and craftsmanship of homes of that era. Located between Prince Street and Wales Alley, it's among a collection of centuries-old residences nicknamed Captain’s Row, a nod to the sea captains that resided there when Alexandria was a bustling commercial port. This block is located in one of the most beloved (and most photographed) sectors of Old Town.

Step into your home away from home and enjoy an interior that’s been professionally designed from top to bottom, balancing historical charm with modern touches. You’ll feel transported to yesteryear in this home, with its quirky, uneven floors and winding staircases, coupled with the comfort of luxurious furnishings, marble bathrooms, and high-end appliances. This property’s distinctive architecture and features stand in stark contrast to today’s cookie-cutter homes—it truly is one of a kind! Antique hardwood floors, built-ins, and detailed crown molding add an elegant touch to the home’s character-filled living spaces.

The living room, complete with a wood-burning fireplace and TV, has been outfitted with a chic, full-size bar. Pull up a bar stool and gather with friends for a cocktail or a glass of wine. Or head into the dining room, a true showpiece oozing traditional style. Plan a dinner party or holiday gathering with up to 10 guests in this beautifully appointed space. In the fully-equipped galley kitchen, you’ll notice recessed lighting, high-end appliances, and plenty of cabinetry.

The master bedroom is a peaceful space to rest and recharge. It boasts a king-size bed with luxurious bedding, a decorative fireplace, and a newly remodeled en-suite marble bathroom. The spacious second bedroom also has a king-sized bed dressed in the finest linens, as well as a settee to relax on while reading a book or enjoying a cup of coffee.

Head to the library, a warm, contemplative space for small gatherings or quiet moments. With the rich green walls, leather furnishings, and antique décor, it’s like stepping back in time. This room doubles as an extra bedroom and has a sleeper sofa, comfortable chairs, and a TV.

Finally, in the third-floor loft space, you’ll find the fourth guest bedroom, a whimsical place to hang out for the younger guests in your group. With low ceilings (6’5”) and a unique layout, this fun space features a queen-size daybed with a pull-out trundle and a separate twin daybed, accommodating up to four. It also features a newly remodeled full bathroom.

Get some fresh air in the lovely walled garden, featuring a cozy brick patio with lush landscaping, a gas grill, and stylish outdoor furniture. A Japanese maple tree stands as the patio’s centerpiece—it turns a brilliant red hue in the fall months.

The Neighborhood:
Old Town Alexandria
With a history spanning more than 250 years, this delightful town still bears many hallmarks of its fascinating past. Old Town is packed with museums and landmarks that make you feel like you’ve stepped aboard a time machine. Its narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with centuries-old row homes, and European-inspired storefronts along main thoroughfares such as King Street are a treat for the eyes. Dine in locally owned eateries and shop at independent retailers — the choices are seemingly endless. There’s no better time to experience the magic of Old Town than during the holidays, when buildings are decked out in glittering lights and seasonal décor.

Washington, DC
The nation’s capital is the cultural and historic heartbeat of the nation, and with around 70 museums, it’s a prime spot for curious, knowledge-seeking travelers. After a visit to the Washington or Lincoln monuments, explore buzzy neighborhoods like Capitol Hill, H Street Corridor, or Dupont Circle, where eateries and bars bring together the local crowd. Performance venues and arts organizations scattered throughout town showcase American art and music in all its forms. To appreciate natural beauty, head to one of the many parks dotting the landscape, including Rock Creek Park and Glover Archbold Park, or settle in near Georgetown Waterfront Park overlooking the Potomac River.

Getting Around:
Prince of Wales House has a walk score of 91! So you can easily get around Old Town on foot. However, when needed, there is plenty of public transportation, including buses and the metro. There is a free trolley that goes up and down King St to the King St metro station. Uber and Lyft are also readily available.

Fabulous from start to finish
This property couldn't be anymore charming. It was absolutely perfect for 4 adults. It had all the space we needed and was very well equipped. Beautiful linens, fluffy towels (and plenty of them!) Arrival was lovely with champagne and fresh flowers waiting. The property managment was top notch, one of the best experiences I've had.
