About Jaki and Don McCarthy
We live in the nearby suburbs and bought this house as a home renovation project. This house has been a labor of love for us as we slowly renovated. The house was smaller and used as a boarding house when we bought it, but we have done a complete top to bottom renovation -- including adding the entire basement level!! The outside is historic, but everything inside is modernized to todays standards.
Jaki and Don McCarthy purchased this House in 2001
Why Jaki and Don McCarthy chose Old Town West
We come down and stay here as often as we can. We have lots of ties to Old Town-- we met in one of Old Towns favorite watering holes -- Murphys Irish Pub, had our first date at the Hard Times Cafe, and spend alot of time out and about in Old Town. Eventually we plan to retire here, but until then, we would like to share it with you!
What makes this House unique
This house is quite big for Old Town, so you will have more room than most. You may feel like staying in -- cook meals in the large kitchen or out back on the grill, spend some time hanging out in the house, or on the patio. But the location is quite central just two blocks from Old Towns main drag, King Street. If you are going into DC, the metro is only 5 blocks away.

Great place & location
No issues whatsoever. We enjoyed our stay.
Beautiful home in an ideal location
Gorgeous, comfortable home within easy walking distance of King Street and everything Alexandria and DC have to offer. The house was immaculate and well-stocked and the hosts were wonderful and accomodating - even calling before our arrival to see if we had any questions. The Ethiopian restaurant next door is also amazing. My kids wanted to go back every night. I would recommend this VRBO to anyone coming to the area and hope to return myself sometime soon.
Very Nice Stay
The communication between me and the owners was excellent. Our stay at the house was great, the house was exceptionally clean and stocked with all your basic needs. The house was roomier than we actually thought from the pictures. Everything was close by on King St., parking was a plus and easy access to everything. We would like to book again in the future.
Great house and location
Location was perfect with a few blocks to king street and a playground on the corner. House was clean and in excellent condition with a finished attic and basement, loads of room for 7 adults and one child. We had a wonderful bbq in the back yard with lots of fun and room to run around. Highly recommend it if you are looking for a home away from home.
A great family vacation house
My entire family had a great time staying a week a the house. The property was very accommodating to have large family/friends gatherings yet also allowed us to spread out and have individual time. The patio area was where we spent our early morning coffee, with a beautiful canopy of trees and lots of birds and squirrels. A short two blocks away on King street you can experience all of Alexandria with lots of shops and restaurants. Be sure to check out the old torpedo factory at the bottom of King street at the waterfront. A lot of neat artists in that building where you can pick up a small piece of unique art to take home. We all commented throughout the week that we just loved the quaintness of the little house. It's an older home, but recently remodeled beautifully and updated to take advantage of the quaintness. Take note, there are no bedrooms on the main floor, so stairs down to a bedroom, or stairs up to the remaining 2 bedrooms and loft. There is a bathroom right off the kitchen which turned out to be a perfect location!! The beds really slept great, having a washing machine was awesome, and the bathroom layout was just perfect. The kitchen was very well stocked with pots, pans, silverware, glasses, etc, cooking in the kitchen was easy and we did it a lot. The location was central enough to experience the city life yet just off the beaten path enough that the neighborhood was quiet each night where we all got a good night sleep. Having the ability to park two cars at the back of the house off the alley was extremely useful and we used it throughout our stay. The grocery stores are a little far away to walk with any large amount of groceries, so plan to uber or have a car available in some fashion. We went back to Trader Joe's & Harris Teeter (seemed to be the best) many times throughout our stay for additional groceries. We loved the kitchen and chose to cook in more than eat out ;>). The owners are very easy going and pleasant to talk with or text. Again very accommodating and great place to stay and have family time.
Perfect for our family reunion
The house is even nicer than the photos! Fantastic neighborhood so close to restaurants and shops but in a quiet area. Jaki & Don responded immediately to questions. House well stocked. Try the Ethiopian restaurant next door. Fabulous!
Old Town Alexandria is one of the oldest towns in the country, yet vibrant with small boutique shops and restaurants. Stroll through the historic neighborhood to the Potomac River and see the places where George Washington, Robert E. Lee, and many others made history. You are also just a short drive to downtown Washington DC and all our Nation's Capital has to offer.
