Elizabeth Ward has lived in the Monterey/Carmel area for more than 40 years. She moved to the Corral de Tierra area 13 years ago, finding this area a hidden, unspoiled gem.
Elizabeth Ward purchased this house in 2002
Most people know that the Monterey Bay area is famous for its natural beauty and popular events, but locals know it also has very quirky microclimates. Sunbelt properties close to the ocean, like Corral de Tierra and Carmel Valley, are prized and at a premium. Summer days can be cold and foggy in Pebble Beach or Carmel, and just a few minutes drive inland finds a warm, sunny day. A gloomy day in Salinas turns into a pocket of sunshine a few miles west where we are. The Corral de Tierra area, also known as John Steinbeck's Pastures of Heaven, is a sunny jewel. I've lived on the Peninsula for 40 years — in Carmel Valley, Pebble Beach, Monterey, Pacific Grove — and this is the area I chose for my dreamhome and retirement.
We are 5 minutes away from the main entrance to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. And we are just down the road from The River Road Wine Trail -- a country drive that winds through 12 exceptional vineyards and wine-tasting rooms. A very special afternoon!
Hikers and Mountain Bikers will love the Fort Ord National Monument, which runs behind our property. A trail head is just down the road from us!
The location was perfect and the ammodations worked great for 8 adults and a child. The large sunroom was great for hosting friends for an after track dinner and the kitchen and bbq were perfect for making food to feed everyone. We will definitely stay here again!
Perfectly suited my needs; the route to and from the location went against traffic, which turned out to be smart move given the delays seen when there's events. Clean, quiet, and well kept.
Elizabeth was a wonderful host! We picked this place for the convenience of its location near Laguna Seca raceway. For our party of 6, we were situated well with each pair of us having our own beds. Would definitely stay here again for our next race at Laguna Seca.
My family and I had a wonderful time at the Monterey guesthouses. We rented out all three guest homes and everyone commented on how cozy and clean the rooms were. It was great for a family getaway as three different familes were able to stay in three different rooms. The place is dog friendly and my dog looked so happy. The yard was large and had a great view. Elizabeth was great and made herself available for the many questions we had. Overall, the place made for some great family memories. I definitively will be coming back.
My family of 7 (parents, 86 yr old grandmother and 4 adult children) stayed at "East of Eden" for 3 wonderful days and nights while visiting the Monterey/Big Sur area. The home is just what is advertised and pictured: clean, light, gorgeous grounds, quiet, and a warm, lovely hostess. It is well stocked but whatever you might not find, Elizabeth will cheerfully get for you (she lives next door); it includes wireless internet access, a large TV and DVD player too. Her 3 cocker spaniels are friendly and well-behaved. We especially enjoyed chatting around the outdoor tables, sitting in the sun. There is one formal bedroom (with a luxurious king bed!) and multiple pullout couches with all linens and blankets. With as many people as we had, you will give up some privacy (for a little more, however, you can rent the attached suite as well) and you should be aware that the sunroom is the same temperature as the outside, which for us was hot during the day but chilly at night. There is a large ceiling fan to cool it down but at night you'll need to bundle up for sleep if you are in that room...oh, and be careful, the futon when open, tips!
Great location, beautiful views and garden, wonderful setting. If your seeking elements and ghosts of John Steinbeck or wish to immerse yourself in the fantastic automotive delights this is a the place to reside and rest after your adventures. Elizabeth our congenial host made our stay memorable and those memories are fondly recalled as we settle in back home.
Perfect for Race fans: 5 minutes from Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca. The entire Monterey Peninsula within a short drive. The River Road Wine Trail ( 15 wineries with wine tasting ) is just down the road from us.
