About The Owner

Aloha , We are the caretakers of Maka Nui of which we are privileged to do. We have been on property for 27 years & lived on the Big Island for 31 . So feel free to call us with any questions you might have & we would be happy to help.

The Owner purchased this house in 2005

Why The Owner chose Captain Cook

Maka Nui is country but close enough (15-20 minutes) to night life . It has all the stores to get supplies here & great restaurants so we get the best of both worlds.

What makes this house unique

First are the mascots Frick & Frack (dogs) They love to meet new folks as is always a chance to get treats! Then the sounds of birds & palms rustling in the breeze. Of course the pool & fruits are always a plus! And we are always around to answer any questions. As the pool /gardeners & coffee workers there is always something to do.

Even nicer than the pictures!! Immaculate condition with everything you need. Candi was wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Everything was clean and ready on arrival. Wonderful lanai both levels. Pool was very nice. Most of all, the house had everything you need to cook, play, and relax. I highly recommend this house for a large group. There was lots of room for privacy yet be part of the group. The kitchen and lanai were the Crown Jewels!! We will definitely be back.

Great place to combine families!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Maka Nui as we celebrated the wedding of our son and his fiancé. We combined our two families to stay at this very nice Home. Everyone had room for privacy, but larger areas in the home allowed for time to get together as a new “family!”

The screened lanai was a favorite and the views are excellent. You will need to plan on doing some driving for sight-seeing. Distances are deceiving as the roads tend to be very winding and much slower to travel than we anticipated.

Candi was a great hostess and available whenever we had questions. We highly recommend staying at this Home!

Summertime on the big Island!!

  • 5 of 5

Just got back from 11 nights at Maka Nui on a family/friends vacation – it was amazing!! As at least one reviewer has noted, the pictures don’t really do the property justice – it’s a large house with plenty of room to move around and find a quiet space even with a large group. The screened in lanai alone is worth the price of admission – we spent a great deal of time hanging out/reading/relaxing on the lanai……great view, as well. Candi is a great host and while she was always willing to answer our questions and give us advice when we asked, she is fairly hands-off, letting us pretty much do our own thing, which was appreciated. The pool is quite refreshing when it gets hot…..we did spent much quality time in/by the pool. The grounds of the property are a tropical paradise – be prepared to not want to leave when your stay is up! We looked at other locations on the island instead of Captain Cook, as we really didn’t know where the best location would be for us. As it turns out, Captain Cook was more or less ideal, as it’s a quick trip into Kona/Kailua, but also already partly on your way to Volcanos NP, and within easy striking distance of some of the nicer beaches in south Kohala.

Captain Cook itself is totally low key, which is great…..a few restaurants with great local fare (Super J’s, L&L, etc.) and a fab farmers market. Kealakekua Bay is right below the house and the house has a fabulous view of the south end of the bay. The best snorkeling spots on this bay are accessible by kayaking, hiking, swimming, or boat tour. We did both the hike down (not too bad if you are in decent shape) and the boat tour (I highly recommend the Fair Wind trip), and both were awesome. Additionally, Two Step is another great snorkeling spot just south of Kealakekua, and easily accessible by car from the property without getting back on the main road. The spinner dolphins visited us while we were there and swam around with everyone in the bay for over an hour – quite an amazing experience.

Lastly, Frick and Frack……I can’t end the review without saying something about Candi’s very lovable dogs. It’s always difficult to leave our dogs behind when we vacation, and these guys were very friendly, checking in with us every now and again. They mostly frolicked with each other when we saw them but when we called them over they were more than happy greet us – we got a little bit of our much needed dog fix in with them around!

Maka Nui is highly recommended!!

Great space for the extended family - especially the enormous screened veranda and the pool area

  • 5 of 5

The veranda which runs around three sides of the main floor has spectacular views of the coast, offers a private niche for every member of an extended family, and is screened to minimize insect visits. The pool is inviting with its bubbling waterfall, and the surrounding gardens are beautifully maintained and constantly reminds you that you are in Hawaii. If we had brought enough food, we would have passed through the private gate and not left the grounds.

Candi sent us all the information we needed before we arrived, and patiently answered all our questions at arrival. Remember to bring sun tan lotion to prevent burns and repellent during mosquito season.

We highly recommend this property.
