Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-10) - Very close to town...

If you are adventurous and free spirited, but still require all the amenities a luxury rental home has to offer then Pu`uhonua ('Place of Refuge') is the place for you. Experience tropical Hawaii at it’s finest in this unique pole house nestled just above Kealakekua Bay ('Pathway of the Gods') in Captain Cook, Hawaii. At this elevation you will enjoy the perfect climate and sweeping 180+ degree views of the ocean, Mauna Loa and Kealakekua Bay, in a quiet and comfortable setting.

Convenient location, just a moment away from the town of Captain Cook, with all of its amenities including one of the islands best grocery stores, fantastic restaurants, local shops and a wonderful farmers market.

Watch breathtaking sunsets from the spacious upper lanai that wraps around the house. Just 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona Airport, Pu`uhonua House is minutes from an array of activities including horseback riding, hiking, tennis, diving, dolphin and seasonal whale watching. Rent kayaks and kayak across the majestic Kealakekua Bay, swim with spinner dolphins and snorkel one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets, the Captain Cook monument.

Enjoy a variety of tropical fruits and flora grown on the property such as bananas, papayas, lemons, avocados, breadfruit, macadamia, coffee and mangos. We are close to some of south Kona’s finest beaches and minutes from great swimming, snorkeling and child safe beaches like Hookena, Manini, Keei, and Kealakekua Bay.

Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

About The Owner

Aloha. My Name is Rowan. My mother and father, Bruce & Nikki, fell in love with this very special piece of paradise. It is a unique Hawaiin style home on a very peaceful private 1 acre lot in the town of Captain Cook.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose Kona Coast

We vacationed for may years on the Big Island, staying on all parts of the island. We fell in love with the Captain Cook area because of its proximity to everything, the local culture, the coastal access and all the town has to offer.

What makes this house unique

Captain Cook is a great location for your family vacation. We are close to many beautiful coastal destinations, great shopping, restaurants and a perfect location to explore all that the Big Island has to offer. You are in a great location for day trips and close to Kailua Kona. We have some of the best snokeling, kayaking and surfing spots on the Island.

Truly lovely

  • 5 of 5

Our party of 8 had an outstanding time at Pu'uhonua House! It is absolutely lovely - beautiful deck, glorious view, tasteful decor, clean and comfortable, wonderful loft - in addition to be well-located for adventure in all directions but still somewhat remote and off the beaten path. Bruce was a lovely yet unobtrusive host - lent us snorkel gear, brought fresh fruit, and had good suggestions for restaurants and beaches. Loved the geckos! We hope to return soon!

Beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing I noticed upon checking in was how clean and immaculate the home was, next the gorgeous view! I would recommend this property to anyone visiting the Big Island. Everything was seamless from start to finish and we found it difficult to leave! The home is spacious and unique and was equipped with everything we needed. Kids really enjoyed the loft. We also appreciated the location as we did some travel both north and south. We hope to be able to return someday soon!

Wow!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderfully secluded.

This home is a treasure. Its uniqueness in architecture and location make it a place worth visiting. Plenty of space for a large group, we had a luxurious time there as a couple.

Fresh Fruit from Bruce as a welcome

Gift were just as wonderful as the views from the home out to the bay and further.

As close to experiencing a tree house as it gets. Not a house in the trees, but a house among them. Really special!

Beautiful home with amazing views

  • 5 of 5

Close to everything, there's a binder in the house with menus and all of the close restaurants and grocery stores. Also Close to beaches and snorkelling. The house is beautiful with glass "walls" that you can open up to the outside and the incredible ocean view. Highly recommend, will be staying again

As good or better than advertised

  • 5 of 5

We rent from VRBO half a dozen times a year, all over the world. This rental is top 10% as it relates to comfort, functionality, view and value. As compared to the local market, I'd guess it's top 1%. Look no more - you've found your rental on this gem of a Hawaiian island.

Paradise with a view....

  • 5 of 5

Incredible home in a lush landscaped forest looking out on kona coast, a perfect resting place. Close enough to everything but far enough to enjoy the peace and quiet of local life. Bruce was helpful host and even left a basket of fresh fruit grown on the property. Kids loved the loft bed and games, adults enjoyed reading on the deck...hope to be back soon. Mahalo...
