About Heather Jones

We love islands, fishing, beaches, and seafood. The Florida Keys have all of this and more.

Heather Jones purchased this house in 2005

Why Heather Jones chose Marathon Area

In 2005 we found vacation home paradise in Key Colony Beach. We adore this community because its quiet and offers all the amenities of a small town. The little post office and shops are quaint and friendly. And, best of all, Key Colony is close to other major islands....Key West, Islamorda, Key Largo for more sun and fun.

What makes this house unique

We love go to Sparky's grill and bar (try the Mahi tacos!) for Happy Hour or dinner after a long day of fishing! The Stuffed Pig is one of our favorite breakfast joints. We also enjoy family walks around the island, to watch the sunset, and along the scenic Seven Mile bridge. Key West is an easy drive but, if it's during holiday season, be sure to allow yourself extra time for the traffic. Keep your eyes out for lots of wildlife! We often see large iguanas, manatees, sea turtles, dolphins, and many beautiful birds.

A Wonderful Spot on Key Colony Beach's 10 Street

  • 5 of 5

We spent a really nice month here in April of 2017. Its our 8th or 9th visit to Key Colony Beach , and these Ellison style duplexes are great because they're much roomier than the older 1960's style duplexes, and more modern. The home was clean, well kept , and although we had one minor air conditioning issue, it was quickly fixed the same day, so no complaints at all. The newer Weber gas grill and fish cleaning table with water were bonuses, as well as a bait freezer in garage .

This place is first rate . It has everything you need to stay. The kitchen is well supplied with everything you need. It is decorated with expensive Tommy Bahama decor and furniture throughout including the kitchen supplies. It has beautiful plantation shutters in all rooms. The beds are comfortable too. We have stayed here for 4 years. This year they replaced the washer, dryer, and dishwasher, t.v and it was freshly painted 😀 .

We love sitting on the patio each morning watching the fishing boats going out the canal in front of our place. In the later afternoon it is nice to sit on the patio because it is shaded then. We are on the good side of the canal for this reason. (Happy hour time after staying at the beach all day at the Cabanna Club which is included with the rental.). The shade is appreciated at this time of day.

Anytime we report anything wrong it is always taken care of. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Be careful of the neighbor

  • 1 of 5

This was our second time staying at the house and we really enjoy it. However the neighbor stole our props on the last day of our trip which ruined it for us. We were able to recover them but the police department would not press charges. Just a warning to watch your valuables. The neighbor has a long history with the police.

Key Colony Beach gem!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four (2 adults, 2 teenagers) spent one week in this gorgeous home. We have stayed in KCB a couple of times before, and this house is by far the nicest! The house is very spacious and beautifully decorated, with everything you need to make it your "home away from home". Located on a nice canal, with easy access out via Vaca Cut. Beautiful sunrises from the back porch, and an easy walk to Sunset Beach for beautiful sunsets.

We enjoyed cooking several meals at home and eating out on the back porch. Also ate out several times - Grassy Key Outpost, Frank's Grill, Sparky's for happy hour is a must, Fish Tales, The Island Fish Company. Visited Curly's several times for a drive-through, coffee drink pick-me-up!

We rented paddleboards from Curly's. Sombrero Beach is about a 10 minute drive, with bathrooms, showers, volleyball courts, covered picnic shelters and playground. Great place at Sombrero to put in paddleboards or kayaks. Key West is any easy hour or so drive south, and you must go catch a sunset.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay and hopefully will be back again next Christmas!

Wonderful escape from Winter

  • 5 of 5

What a great way for us to escape the winter! There were so many things about this rental that were perfect for us. All of the rooms are big and open/airy. Lots of space, even in the bathrooms. There are ceiling fans in the bedrooms, dining room, and living room.

The kitchen was equipped with everything a cook could want. Lots of pots, pans, baking dishes, and even gadgets! We brought some "kitchen essentials" with us and never needed to unpack our box -- everything was already there. Things you simply don't expect in a rental were provided here -- enough flatware for several meals and more than a dozen lovely wine glasses. There is plenty of counter space for the most ambitious cook.

There is a new Weber gas grill on the patio, but do be aware that renters need to provide the propane. If you are lucky, there will still be some leftover from the previous renters. Since we were there for the month, we used the grill for many meals.

Being on the canals provides the entertainment of passing boats, iguanas, and pelicans. This location provides morning sun and afternoon shade. It was great to be able to sit on the patio with morning coffee or an afternoon libation and surf the Internet on the provided WIFI.

We loved going to the Cabana Club for the pool, hot tub, and beach. Having a full bar and food service there made it a regular day's event.

Key Colony is very friendly to walkers and bicycles. It is possible to walk or bicycle pretty much anywhere on the island. We regularly traveled this way to the pool, the local post office, or out to eat.

Some of the places we enjoyed include:

Sparky's for fish tacos and happy hour wings/shrimp.

The food from Cabana Breezes that is served at Cabana Club

Tarpon Lodge for happy hour appetizer and drink specials

Fish Tales for lunch, great fish/seafood buys, and prime steaks for the grill

Marathon Lady for a fishing trip

The Hurricane for a great $5 fish sandwich at lunch

Burdines for a killer tuna melt

You can't miss going to Sunset beach to watch the sun go down and join the locals in a serenade about how great it is to be in Marathon Key -- courtesy of local musician John Bartus.

This rental provides the serene quiet of Key Colony Beach, but the convenience of grocery, drug stores, and many restaurants are within a few miles in the rest of Marathon Key. What a great home away from home for us!
