About Nick Agnew

We bought our Saugatuck property- 'Shorewood'- because of it's tranquil and wooded locale near Lake Michigan. We built and designed our 'Shorewood' house in such a way that would comfortably accommodate large family gatherings. 'Shorewood' which sits near the beach and towns of Saugatuck and Douglas, represents to us the best that the area has to offer.

Nick Agnew purchased this house in 2006

Why Nick Agnew chose Fennville

We bought this beautiful Saugatuck property because of it's perfect combination of tranquility when trying to get away from the stresses of everyday life, while still being able to be active in both athletics and cultural activities. Saugatuck has a very urbane charm to it, without the noise and the crowds of a major metro area. Our property is located in the most tranquil spot, near the sugar sand Lake Michigan shoreline. We built a house that we felt that not only our family could enjoy year round, but also, would be an ideal space for extended family or other large families or groups who could gather comfortably. Our house is in a private enclave, that has the Lake in the front end, and the peaceful woods in the back. Saugatuck constantly surprises us with it's diversity; ranging from the magnificent sunsets over Lake Michigan (right out our front door!), to the sugar sand beaches; to the Art Barn where our children, on a rainy day, can get make their own artwork...and it does not end there!

What makes this house unique

The beach! The sugar sand that squeaks when you walk on it. The dunes at the beach. The amazingly clean and beautiful, warm, Lake Michigan water during the summer. The sunsets! The summer! The Fall, when the leaves change and you can go apple picking! The endless running on beach/roads and/or the endless biking on roads...right out the front door. The safety and quiet of living on a private road in a private enclave with no traffic or noise. The short bike or drive to downtown Saugatuck or Douglas for food, culture, shopping, antiquing, or just strolling. The locale of house with fire pit, hot tub (and outdoor shower), and wildlife surrounding property. The airy and open layout, that our 4000 square foot home offers families and groups on trips.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a wonderful stay at the Saugatuck Beach Home. The house was

amazing* bright, spacious, and very comfortable with all the amenities.

Very clean home and well maintained property. The great room was large enough to accommodate our group for meals and conversation. And the kids loved the rec room in the lower level where they played table tennis and lounged on the sectional for movies. We loved how private and tranquil it was in the house and on the grounds. The beach went on for miles and the sand was the best. We enjoyed the Jacuzzi and had excellent campfires out back after long days on the beach. We definitely will be back!

Best Family Reunion Ever

  • 5 of 5

Four families, three generations, eleven people had the BEST time getting to know each other better at this amazing beach house. The location, variety of gathering spaces and the amenities were beyond expectations. Naps in the hammock, reading on the screen porch or the upper deck, quiet jigsaw puzzles in the den, cookouts on the back deck, marshmallows and sparklers around the fire, soaking in the hot tub, cut throat games of pool in the basement. And the Colorado contingent went nuts over the easy access to the Lake Michigan shore! The week passed so quickly. We cooked almost every meal in the house (eating out with 11 is a major headache) and found the kitchen stocked with every pan and appliance we could need. We got to show off Saugatuck & Douglas, rode the "duck ride", picked a ton of blueberries just down the highway and enjoyed a quiet adult dinner away from the crowds at the "Salt of the Earth" in 'beautiful downtown' Fennville! And did I mention spending time every day at the beaches? Memories for a lifetime.

Shorewood property in Douglas

  • 5 of 5

The Shorewood property was just as beautiful as the online pictures. Two items to mention: 1.) The house was secluded and surrounded by beautiful woods so there was limited view of the lake, but the walk to the beach was acceptable and 2.) The beds are very high off the floor and we had an elderly grandmom who could not get into and out of them safely. (The bunk bed room were taken over by four cousins!) She did have to sleep on the sofa in the second floor living room. It is a beautiful room and she wasn't unhappy sleeping there. And it turned out to be the quiet spot of the house! The home is well maintained and very clean. The furnishings were well taken care of and the basement playroom was a big hit! The outside of the property was secluded and we enjoyed using the fire pit. Our family spent many years summer vacationing in Douglas/Saugatuck and we enjoyed visiting the area in October. We could tell the owners loved and took care of their home and we would definitely stay at Shorewood again and recommend to others to rent this home.

Terrific Home & Location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this terrific home and location when we stayed there for an extended weekend with three other families. Our group consisted of 8 adults and 8 children; a total of 16 people. The home accommodated all of us comfortably with plenty of bedrooms, bathrooms and communal rooms where we could gather as a whole group or where where the adults and children could be together separately. For example, the adults could sit in and around the hot tub or around the dining room table while the children could take advantage of all the electronic and non-electronic (ping pong, etc.) in the lower level game room. The home had everything we needed to make ourselves home; stay entertained and cook for large groups of people. The home is in very good condition and clean. The property is in a fantastic location - it seems secluded in the woods yet it's only a few steps from the beach and minutes from downtown Saugatuk. Overall, we had a fantastic time during our long weekend and most of that was contributed to us having this wonderful, fully-equipped property as our home base for the weekend. This is a property I would actively seek out again to book when I return to the area.

Great place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

I originally was going to give the property a 4 star rating. But we had such a good time I had to give it a 5. There were ten of us there and had plenty of room. It is a very big and nice home. By the way I thought I needed to nick the rating because we ran out of propane for the gas grill. I couldn't take off a point for that after the good time we had.

Wonderful long weekend

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend in Saugatauk. The house was clean, comfortable and close to many attractions in the area. We really took advantage of the beach, the fire pit and the spectacular sunsets. I would not be surprised if we booked it again next year.

family fun vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had 15 people fit comfortably in this beautifully situated property. Location was lovely with sunsets every night just two blocks away. For those who like stairs, you can walk down the 96 of them to the beach front and enjoy lake Michigan at your feet. This private beach was ideal for us who'd rather not go to Oval Beach with the entire town. The front screened-in porch was lovely for morning coffee. The side yard perfect for baggo games and fire pit for an evening marshmallow roast, guitar playing and sing a longs. We barely used the hot tub because the weather was hot and chemicals didn't seem like they were working adequately. When we realized we didn't have enough towels for everyone we contacted the owner who quickly remedied the situation. The kitchen was well stocked with pots/pans/cups etc. but on the small side for those who like to cook. The teenagers really appreciated getting away to the basement to play on the Wii, ping pong and pool table. Lots of fun down there! We have some small suggestions that we think would help the house be even more fabulous than it already is... If the refrigerator was plugged in the basement, we would have used it for sure. Instead we had coolers upstairs for additional beverages that couldn't fit in the kitchen refrigerator that doesn't have an ice maker (so plan accordingly). We suggest rubber bath mats for inside the shower for those older folks who are prone to slipping and maybe a hand rail in the shower for them too. Us ladies would have appreciated some hangers in the very large closets (really nice) to hang our clothes. And one last nit picky suggestion is deep fitted sheets so they don't untuck while sleeping. These are all minor suggestions, as the owners have really thought of everything here. The only other downside to this property (or maybe upside for some) is the poor cell phone coverage. This is no fault of the owner, just a Saugatuck location issue. The house has a landline as a back up which came in handy a few times. We really loved everything about this impeccably maintained home, whose owners are there whenever you need something. Thanks for the lovely accommodations :)
