About Stephanie Orth
I am a high school English and journalism teacher and my husband is an electrical engineer. I earned my bachelor's degree from CMU, master's from Wayne State. After several years in the advertising business, I stayed home with my girls until they were all in elementary school, then went back to school to get my teaching certificate. I now teach at Lake Orion High School. We have three daughters and live in Lake Orion.
Stephanie Orth purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Stephanie Orth chose Bear Creek
I grew up with a cottage in Harbor Springs, owned by my grandparents. I fell in love with the area. My husband and I decided Petoskey was a little more our speed, and spent one weekend looking at houses for sale. We fell in love with the front porch, incredible wood trim, fire place, and potential to make the attic a play space for kids. The charming kitchens - two, making having more than one family here a breeze - were a huge bonus. Add in the carriage house with a second floor, wonderful neighbors, and ability to walk everywhere, and we were sold.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our family loves to downhill ski all winter and this location offers 3 world class ski hills within 15 minutes. In the summer, we stroll downtown Petoskey trying all of the quaint restaurants and sandwich shops, and of course, ice cream shops. We love walking along Bear River and out to the lighthouse where our children will spend hours jumping from the break wall into the bay. We also enjoy biking along the Wheelway into Charlevoix for lunch, and back again.

With a group of friends, we came up for a long weekend. The house provided us a super opportunity to come and go when we needed; great location for Petoskey-ing. We were a group of 13 and slept and moved about comfortably. Thanks nOrthstar
Charming Petoskey Home Retreat
Every year a group of ladies that knew each other since elementary school or who became friends during high school and some who are friends now because we all went to the same High School gather for a weekend. We were very pleased with our stay. The home is gracefully old but clean and very well maintained. We loved the front porch, the easy walk to downtown and even had a nice "camp fire" in the back yard. We would highly recommend this beautiful home for your visit to Petoskey.
Beautiful, historical, pleasant, peaceful, thought provoking property.
You really are made to feel like a guest in someone's home. There are family momentos placed throughout the 3 story home. Every detail is taken care of. The 2 kitchens are well stocked, except no popcorn popper😒 The third floor is a fun zone for kids. We used all of the fans, too numerous too count. Wood work is outstanding. We could only imagine the work that went into building this 1920 house, from the time with servants, to perhaps 2 residences to now. The house was clean. It was walking distance to downtown Petoskey, as well as the Bear Creek walking trail right on down to the harbor. There is also a huge casino, a chocolate factory, famous Tunnel of Trees with Leggs Inn at the end, and a State Park. What more could you need ? Thanks Stephanie for allowing your home to be rented. Love the name😁.
Beautiful place close to downtown
Four couples went up for a winery weekend. Plenty of room, comfortable. Enjoyed being so close to downtown. Everyone would stay there again!
Quaint, comfortable, spacious historic home.
Realize its an old home and floors will squeak -- just adds to the charm. Kitchen had everything we needed. Very clean. Very organized, efficient space. The attic play space was a big hit for the kids. Adults had places to relax and feel comfortable. Feels very spacious. Excellent water pressure in shower. Use of laundry area a bonus. Keeps the old charm, with 'period appropriate' updates. I wouldn't change a thing. Hope to stay again.
We came up from Chicago with some young adults from our church. nOrthstar was a great weekend for us; we could come and go when we pleased, play some music, make our own food, etc. And it's walking distance to downtown Petoskey so that's great. And it's by the river which is gorgeous.
The hosts were gracious with timing and departures. The neighbor removed the perpetually falling snow so many times in our three days up north. Great guy:)
The home is beautiful with so much room for the 11 of us. Thanks Stephanie!
