Luxurious ski out rental home apartment and ski lodge in Big Sky. Full home comforts in a relaxed and spacious ski chalet set in the Rocky Mountains, just one hour drive from Bozeman, Montana.
Located on a warm southern facing slope on the lower slopes of the Big Sky ski area, with panoramic views on three sides, Casa Big Sky is three minutes on skis (on groomed ski trail passing right through our property) from the White Otter lift which accesses the Big Sky base area and the mountain beyond. You can ski back to just below Casa Big Sky (and walk the final 250 yards on the road) from both Big Sky and Moonlight basin ski areas - or take the Cascade lift and then approach the home directly from behind.
Skiing and boarding are the main winter activities. There is ample lift serviced terrain in the 2 resorts, but if you feel the need to venture further, various back country options are available.
Summer activities in Big Sky fall into two main categories. Those organised by the resort, including Lone Peak Expeditions, Adventure Zip-line Tours, Climbing Walls etc and those to be found in the greater South West Montana area including Fishing and Rafting on the Gallatin, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Golf and of course all that Yellowstone Park ( nearest boundary - half an hour away) and West Yellowstone (just over an hour away) have to offer.
Casa Big Sky is a recently built two story private chalet with total built area of approximately 4,000 square feet set in the Cascade subdivision of the Mountain Village of Big Sky , commanding panoramic and unobstructed views of Lone Peak and the Big Sky and Moonlight Basin Ski Area.
The owners, who divide their time between Chile, Thailand and Montana, use the upper floor primarily during the ski season. The lower floor, which can be closed off from the main house as a self contained apartment, is available for rent at most times of the year.
Getting around the mountains (winter)
There are two primary ski areas in the immediate vicinity of Casa Big Sky (Big Sky and Moonlight Basin - now combined into one super resort - the largest in the USA). Connected to Big Sky, there is also a third ski resort, the Yellowstone Club - but this is a private facility and access there is by invitation only.
Big Sky ski area - can be directly accessed from Casa Big Sky. Put your skis on at the front door, take a diagonal traverse across the garden, and pick up on the groomed trail that runs right through the property and will take you down to the Cascade and While Otter ski lifts (about 3 minutes on skis). You can ride this lift in the morning without a ticket if you tell the lifty that you are heading to the ticket office at Big Sky. White Otter takes you across the back of the resort area and drops you just above the Big Sky base area - where the main lifts such as Swift Bear, Ram Charger and Explorer take you up to the Lone Peak and Andesite ski areas.
The other lift close by the house, Cascade is really only a real estate access lift - that you may chose to use when you return to Casa Big Sky, if you want to avoid the three minute walk on the more direct access.
You can return directly to Casa Big Sky from the top of Swift Bear, anywhere on Lone Peak or Challenger - or if you have crossed over to Moonlight, from the top of Six Shooter or Iron Horse.
There are several options on the route home, the two quickest end up at the Rising Bull Trail down to Rising Bull, which you will reach about 250 meters from Casa Big Sky. From there you will have to leave the groomed trail and walk (some do it with skis) the short distance up to the house.
A longer route which involves taking one more lift (Cascade) allows you to approach the home from behind on the ski trail that leads right though our property without the need to walk.
You will find detailed descriptions of these routes in the house - and I would encourage you to discuss the options directly with me when you are here.
If you are a complete ski novice, or are at a very low level of fitness, you might find the relatively gently ski trails (not ski pistes) that access Casa Big Sky more than you are comfortable with. If this proves the case, I recommend taking a three minute drive to the Moonlight Lodge or the deserted Pony Express lift car park (ten steps from car to lift) and starting your day there. You then have the added bonus of taking in some Après Ski in the excellent Moonlight Lodge.
Moonlight Basin - interconnects with Big Sky - and can also be accessed by a three minute drive - either up to the main Moonlight Lodge (a really good place for lunch or Après Ski) or from the Madison Lodge (there is a much larger parking area here) - just over the shoulder of the mountain.

Why William Casa Big SKy chose Big Sky Mountain Village
Quite simply Big Sky is the best, largest and least crowded lift serviced skiing in north America. We had been visiting (and renting) for extended stays for 5 years - and then in late 2009 found prices had become affordable, so purchased. The house is primarily for my wife and I, but when we do not have friends and family visiting, or when we are not in residence, we like to defray operation costs by renting the spaces we are not using.
What makes this Chalet unique
The space and the peace and quiet. Free roaming wildlife - foxes, elk, moose and the occasional bear are our closest neighbors. Yet all this is within ski access (or 3 minutes drive) of two significant resorts.

First Vacay @ Big Sky....Location was Great!!!
This was our first vacay to Big Sky and the location was great. About a 3 minute drive to the Mountain Village, where there is free day parking. The lower apartment was perfect for our family of 3. The private hot tub was our highlight after all day skiing. Great little kitchen for making dinners in, had everything we needed; only went out once for dinner. Ate lunches at the mountain due to the location of the house, not easy to get back for lunch. All the amenities mentioned in the description where at the house. The apartment is modern and up to date. The bathrooms are up to date and one is very large (shared with my daughter). Master bedroom is large with a TV in the room. The second room is great for kids, with the bunk beds. If sharing with another couple, the second room is not as private as the master bedroom. There is a sliding door to separate the living space and large curtain on the other side that separates from the kitchen.
I would highly recommend renting the lower apartment. The owners are great, are available when needed and provide privacy. Never really crossed paths with them. Thanks for a great first Big Sky vacay!!!!
Wonderful and private spot right on the mountain!
My family had a fabulous stay at Casa Big Sky. It was so beautiful being right on the hill, which we enjoyed even when not skiing. The house is very clean and well maintained. It is well stocked and had everything we needed for our stay. Honestly, it was a perfect little home base for our week adventure that we looked forward to returning to (especially soaking in the hot tub each night!)
I have three kids, so we decided to make the quick drive to Madison Base each morning to ski. That base is so quiet and easy to access with all of the amenities you need (tickets, rentals, lodge). We also enjoyed horseback riding at Jake's and a fabulous hike through Ousel Falls. We certainly look forward to returning!

Trip exceeded our expectations
Our trip to Big Sky exceeded our expectations. William was very responsive. He was quick and patient even when I asked questions that were answered in his well documented guest guide. He let my son use the tools on his workbench to tweak his snowboard. Much appreciated! And we really enjoyed just skiing out the front door to the slopes everyday. We plan to visit again next year with the rest of our gang (wife and daughter).
Great house and owners
The owners of this house are great. The first day my daughter had a problem with her ski's and he jumped right in and fixed it. The house is beautiful and in a great location. The only issue was with the dryer it did not work. I would stay here again no questions asked.

Great location for an awesome ski vacation
The apartment is on the lower level of the owners' home. There are three main areas at Big Sky: The main ski base, Moonlight Basin, and Madison Base. This is between the main ski base and moonlight basin. You'll be turning at the first left after the ski lift that goes over the road after passing the entrance to big sky.
The goods: This place is in an outstanding location. Very nicely appointed apartment, comfortable and clean. Well provisioned. The owner was super responsive when we called him with questions. The bathrooms are good sized with an endless supply of hot water. 2 full bathrooms for 2 bedrooms is nice. The jacuzzi is a nice way to end the day. Extremely convenient to all the main areas via car (less than 10 minutes). We found we had everything in the kitchen we needed to prepare meals for 4 adults.
The 'need to knows': If you envision ski in / ski out as snapping on your skis out the door, immediately going down a slope, then being able to sail back in effortlessly on the run from the top, this won't be for you. It takes effort. We did it two days and just found it much easier to drive in. Madison Base has a large parking lot that is virtually empty while still having a ticket office and service. The washer/dryer is European style. Please note that the second 'bedroom' does not have the same level of privacy as the master. It is much better suited for children or a couple that doesn't mind.
The cabin was amazing!! Stunning views!!! William was an excellent host!!! Answered any questions I had about the area, things to do, etc. He was very helpful!! We had the best time in Big Sky !!! Thanks for sharing your cabin William!!!

Additional information about rental rates
Minimum let is generally 5 days (and 9 days during Holiday Season). Shorter lets will be considered if they are a good fit with existing bookings. If availability still exists weekends can be booked from the Tuesday preceding the weekend. Weekend rates are calculated at a 50% surcharge over the daily rate. Lets of over 30 days subject to 15% discount (on the daily rate)
