Why Betsy Gooding chose Mackerel Cove

Jamestown (pop 6,000) is unique on the Eastern Seaboard because of its incomparable beauty, relaxed atmosphere, and multiple access points to Narragansett Bay. Popular Newport is just 12 minutes away via the Pell/Newport Bridge. The Jamestown Ferry is a fun way to access downtown Newport and Rose Island in summer, or purchase an all-day ticket and spend a day on Narragansett Bay. You can catch the fast ferry to Block Island for a day of hiking or biking.

Metropolitan centers of Providence, Boston and New York City are conveniently accessed via Interstate 95, Amtrak and TF Green Airport.

What makes this house unique

Travelers in the know often prefer to rent in laid-back Jamestown (on Conanicut Island), rather than bustling Newport. Jamestown is quieter, less expensive and lacks the tourist crowds and long lines of Newport. At the height of summer in Jamestown, you can bike to local farm stands, walk downtown to dine outdoors, and set up a lawn chairs to enjoy free outdoor Sunday concerts. You might find your own private beach at Beavertail Lighthouse, strike up a conversation with locals, or stay home, fire up the grille and stargaze in your own backyard. Children's activities include a good playground, library story hours, art classes, farm visits, and Beavertail Lighthouse & Aquarium. Newport is close enough by car, but a world apart.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We couldn't have found a better spot for our three-generation week's vacation. Our twin played lawn games in the fenced yard and loved feeding and naming the giant koi. The first-floor suite was perfect for my elderly parents. Highlights: eating breakfast on the sunporch, picking blueberries for pancakes, tacos at Talulah's, walking to Spinnakers for ice cream, riding the Jamestown ferry to Newport, flying kites at Beavertail Lighthouse, Mackeral Cove beach at sunset. We all hope to come back .

Beautiful house in great location

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family has summered in Jamestown for many years. We found The Waves the perfect spot for two couples, grandparents and 3 children We love the village location where you can walk to town, or the beach. The house is well laid out with large bedrooms, attractive common areas and quiet nooks. It was stocked with everything we needed for a lobster dinner, and we ate in more than we ate out. The backyard is beautiful, private and great for BBQing. The owner was very welcoming and helpful. We've planning to book again for next year! AAA+

Well Equipped

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our weeklong stay in Jamestown, visiting family and area attractions. The kids loved visiting Windmist Farm and picking blueberrys in the backyard. The Waves provided delightful accommodations for us. We were so comfortable and content. This lovely place is exceptionally well equipped. We are very appreciative of all your careful attention to every detail! Hopeful we can return. Thank you!

Unforgettable trip in beautiful Jamestown

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful home was the perfect spot for our family reunion -- three generations all under the same roof! We loved having connecting suites and two kitchens so the two families could enjoy privacy or togetherness when we chose. Jamestown is a family-friendly island with lots to do. We rented kayaks, gathered mussels and visited the windmill. We're glad we brought bikes for the ride out to Beavertail Lighthouse and the rural north end of the island. We bought delicious swordfish steaks from Zeke's Creek and found fresh veggies at Hodgekiss Farm. Mackerel Cove is a safe beach for youngsters, but for body surfing, we headed to Narragansett for the larger waves. The Waves had everything we could have wanted. Thanks for an unforgettable stay!
