About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Located on a 150 acre private island within the gates of Colleton River Plantation*, this cottage sits on one of the prettiest, most unique sites in the Hilton Head area. The 'Devil's Elbow Cottage' is nestled among ancient Live Oak trees overlooking the marshes and waters of the Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge.

Enjoy the best of both worlds. Experience the Lowcountry Bluffton / Hilton Head region of years past yet be a short drive from all of the shopping and amenities of one of the world's foremost resort areas.

This very comfortable cottage has high ceilings and large windows that create a light atmosphere and lets you enjoy this special setting. Built in 1992 and recently updated, this little house sits adjacent to the 'main' house. They are the only houses on the island.

Listen to the warblers in the oaks and the snapping shrimp in the marsh below as you doze off for your afternoon nap on the screened porch. Buy seasonal vegetables from the organic farmer on the island before he goes to the farmer's market.

Set the crab trap from the dock or cast a net for shrimp and enjoy the seafood bounty of the Lowcountry. Sight fish for Redfish from a kayak on the flats of the adjacent islands. See hhionthefly on youtube for fishing video filmed in our back yard!

If the natural world gets to be too much for you it is a ten minute drive to highway 278 and all of the shopping, dining, golf and beaches you could desire. Visit the galleries of Bluffton's old town. Take the beautiful drive to Charleston or spend a day in Savannah or Beaufort.

*Colleton River Plantation is a private community and the amenities are for the use of members and their guests only.

Quiet and Relaxing Escape

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Cram's cottage. While just a short drive from Bluffton, it seemed we had the entire SC Lowcountry to ourselves while sitting on the back porch and watching the sun set over the marsh. The cottage was up to date and had everything we needed. The property and views are spectacular. Peter was a great host, checking in multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed.

It was the perfect getaway for our family. We will be back.

Beyond impressive. Quiet, serene & very relaxing.

If your looking for an environment that provides relaxation, solitude, & a first hand dose of nature, this is the place to be. The cottage is clean, comfortable, and above all user friendly. An added amenity was the full moon shining brightly through the sky light in the living room. Highly recommended if you require a calming effect.

Thank You Peter & Leisa for a most enjoyable stay.

Relaxation and seclusion

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was absolutely what we were hoping for, private and remote. This was the best location and we sat on the porch and watched the storms roll in. It was absolutely lovely. Will stay here next time we visit the in-laws.

This place has it all!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled to Blufton looking for a relaxing getaway w/ our 2 young children (ages 6.5 & 18mo) - & wow did Devil's Elbow deliver! Perfect size house for a small family like ours & I can't say enough great things about the property & the owner, Peter. He provided great recommendations on sites to see, restaurants to try, etc., gave us total privacy during our stay, & was most accommodating w/ our travel plans. The cottage & main house are on a private 100 ac island that has plenty to do if you are a birder/nature photographer/paddler. We launched our kayaks at high tide several days of our stay. We are used to saltwater mosquitoes & no-see-ums in FL where we live, so were pleased the bugs weren't bad at all. We used the dock for fishing & birding too. The scenery is perfect Carolina low country - large live oaks & gum trees, hanging Spanish moss, adjacent to tidal Spartina marsh - absolutely beautiful (the photos are no exaggeration). The breezes each evening were absolutely delightful (welcome surprise for a summer-time stay!), so we made good use of the screened-in porch for dining, playing, etc. The accommodations inside the house are first rate - nice linens, nicely stocked kitchen, washer/dryer, everything to make it truly feel like home (why we love VRBO - esp compared to hotels). Honestly, except for a couple trips out to dinner & for mini-golf, we could easily have just stayed on Bear Island for our whole stay. We biked there & through the surrounding neighborhood which w/ all its paths & dense tree cover is lovely in its own right (though Bear Island is 1000x better, IMO). I had time to bird each day & enjoyed finding warbler spp that have since migrated north from where I live in FL, & seeing many of my favorite wading bird species, some which were nesting at nearby Pinckney NWR. There is also a large mixed wading bird colony just outside of the Bear Island property itself. We skipped the beach (not really exotic for us), but didn't miss it at all - enjoyed the Blufton Farmers Market instead. My kids thoroughly enjoyed the trip too. This place is a true gem!!

Wow! Far Exceeded Our Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for that perfect, quiet, off-the-beaten path rental home, this is definitely the place for you! Having been to the HHI and Bluffton area before, we were seeking a nice, quiet location on this trip to just get away, relax, read, sleep in and not have a set agenda. You can't get much more quiet and relaxing than the Devil's Elbow Cottage on Bears Island! The only thing that "disturbed" our peace during our week were the many bird songs, squirrels and shore birds. The screened in porch was a perfect spot for morning coffee, an afternoon nap and evening cocktails as the sun was going down. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the view from the master bedroom is beyond description!

The cottage is really a well-appointed house next to the main house at the end of an island, separated only by a thin, dirt road that crosses the salt marsh. Its a bit off the beaten path, needing to enter via Colleton River Plantation, but its well worth it. The distance to 278 could only have been 4-5 miles or so as the crow flies, but we felt a world away. The best part about where the cottage is located is that you can be right in the heart of the HHI/Bluffton action in about 5-10 minutes!

The house was very clean, well decorated and had everything you would need to spend a nice long week in solitude. Peter and Leisa were wonderful to work with in getting the reservation locked in, gave us great driving directions, had a bunch of good recommendations for dining and activities and respected our privacy...but were very accommodating when needed. We felt truly fortunate to have the opportunity to experience this treasure! I can only hope that we will have the opportunity to return someday!
