This cabin is a Family Treasure. Built as the original vacation cabin on Island Lane, road created by my Dad (retired professor from UVA) forty-some years ago. Great Smith Mountain Lake location! Right on the main channel adjacent to lake marker R-8 where the Roanoke and Blackwater Rivers meet. Expansive lake view with exquisite sunsets are yours for the taking. Peek at the lake from every window direction, face the lake from the deck (like on a boat, and could step out into the water) and just a few steps below will take you to a private stationary dock, where boats can be parked. A few steps up off the upper deck will lead you to perfect views of 4th of July fireworks from Saunders Parkway Marina.

About Laura Owens
I am a musician and educator. The lake cottage provided to me a lot of special solace to practice and develope my musicianship on piano, violin, mandolin. Plus, I love swimming!
Why Laura Owens chose Huddleston
My father spotted Smith Mountain Lake over 40 years ago and bought a large track of land. In fact, he put the road on this peninsula. Several family homes were built and some lots sold. This cottage property was a gift from my father and was my home for 16 years. To eliminate a daily commute to work, I moved to town nearby, and created a beautiful short-term lake rental to share with visiting guests on vacation.
What makes this Cottage unique
Amazing, breathtaking views of the Lake, brightness and light, peacefulness, serenity and privacy (during the week), lake liveliness on the summer weekends!

Basic but very relaxing.
Great view. Perfect for what we needed. Location is conveniently close to a marina. The dock could be a little larger to handle two boats, but it worked. We found it very clean and the owner was easy to work with. Thank you!
Oh! I did not know you had two boats there. Yes, that is a challenge at the dock. I appreciate your giving a five star review. Thank you so very much.
We really enjoyed the home! Beautiful views of the lake. Rustic charm. Close to town. Had everything
We had a great experience! Had a great week at the house. Enjoyed the lake views and the docks. Made use of the kayaks and did some fishing. Went hiking at the state park which is right up the road. Can't wait to come back! Ty!
I am truly glad you enjoyed your stay! Thank you for a lovely review. I am grateful for your comments and am very happy you wish to return. Take good care and come back again soon!
Very relaxing and the view is beautiful!
We really liked this place! Someone stated in another review that the furnishings are outdated. That's what makes this place so comfortable. It adds to the ambiance in my opinion. The beds were comfortable. The furniture was comfortable. Bathroom is spacious. There wasn't a speck of dust anywhere. We applaud the housekeeper! What more could you ask for? We rented movies at Redbox and had movie nights. Went fishing. Watched the sunsets and the sunrises. You can see the gorgeous views from every window in the house. We will definitely be back next year and will bring our family members this time! Laura has a goldmine here. She is very blessed. Thank you Laura for allowing my husband and I to stay here. We had the best time!
I am grateful for this review! I appreciate your comments, and am thankful for my father's initial investment that has become helpful in my life, and also something to share with others. Truly, with the closeness of the lake view and the sunset angle, it is a Gem. So glad to hear your stay was awesome and hope you will tell friends and come back again yourself! Take good care and I hope to hear from you in the future.
A perfect romantic getaway. We had dinner outside on a huge deck with amazing view. Swimming, fishing, and kayaking with easy access to the lake made for a fun and relaxing getaway. I can't wait to find another time to come back.
That is wonderful and I am glad your stay was enjoyable. It's a lovely spot for couples or small families. Thank you for your positive review.
We felt the location was excellent and the house just as advertised The privacy was more than we expected. Thinking about next spring.
I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. And I do appreciate very much your saying in your review that the property was just “as advertised.” Thank you.
Very Nice in the OFf Season!
Let me first say we arrived during the historic Irma hurricane and there was a chance it was moving in our direction. However, we had only one day with breezy rainy weather, one day was cloudy but the rest were great. We decided to experience Smith Mountain Lake after the Labor Day season and it was peaceful and quiet. At first glance from the street, the property looked unassuming and small. Inside the home was spacious and rustic with a little bit of the worn look but it was quite comfortable. It was the view from the deck of the lake and dock that truly makes it. The home faces west and you can see the sun sets from the dock or from the sliding glass doors in the living/dining rooms. The homes amenities and plumbing are in great shape and were comfortable. The beds were quite nice and we slept well.
The walk down to the private dock is steep and the view is very nice. We were surprised to see how high the dock was over the water, around 5 or 6 feet, which makes the water right off the dock deep enough for diving. The water was 71 degrees and was refreshing but other than using the dock the water is, for all intents and purposes, inaccessible. So much so even our German shepherd had difficulty getting in and out of the lake. If I were to offer any criticism/suggestion it would be to create a shoreline entry point. It would be so much better if there was a spot where one could walk into the water, for boats, kids, and pets.
Much to my dismay I found there are no fish in the lake; I tried every kind of spinner, spoon, crank and jig I had, even night crawlers. I watched a few fishing off boats nearby and off the point but it appeared they weren’t pulling in anything either. Morning, noon, and night I had no luck, not even a nibble. Nonetheless, it couldn’t have been more quiet, enjoyable and relaxing.
I would certainly return again in the off season; a personal preference, but the area is far too urban for me. I like the quietude and placidity of the lake after the crowds have gone.
Just a few steps down from the cottage deck takes you to a private stationary dock where you can relax in the sun, enjoy clean fresh water for swimming and dock your boat. Dine in the evening on the outside deck viewing the sunset. Vacationers come from all over to fish where striper, bass, crappies and bluegills abound. Marinas abound where you can rent jet skies, motor and pontoon boats. The Smith Mountain Lake State park offers a beach, hiking trails, and daily planned activities for children. The Booker T. Washington National Monument as well as the Smith Mountain Lake dam all make for a fun trip.
