The PALMETTO PEARL is not just another Beach House. It's an exceptional vacation experience. Privacy just 150 yards from the Ocean is hard to find in any Beach Community. That's only one of the many features The Palmetto Pearl has to offer. This absolutely unique original Folly Beach Property has been in our family for over 35 years and never before and was offered as a Vacation Rental until 2012 after undergoing a complete renovation. Since that time we have continued to upgrade the house on an annual basis. The Palmetto Pearl is set back from the roadway on a high lot surrounded by a small forest of Palmetto (Palm) Trees and Grande Oaks. The back deck offers fabulous sunset's with private views of the estuaries and salt marshes of the Folly River. With easy access to the Beach, the Palmetto Pearl is additionally less than a 1/4 mile from the "Washout" reportedly some of the best surfing on the east coast, and the venue for many sanctioned surfing competitions throughout the year. The Palmetto Pearl is in close proximity to all Folly River Recreational Activities such as para-sailing or kayaking and canoeing expeditions. As well, public tennis courts, a picnic area and a children's playground are all within 5 blocks of the house, only a short bike ride away or even shorter drive where parking is available. All of this and the comforts and privacy of a family home. Nestled among the Palmettos you can enjoy the Morning Sunrise or Afternoon Ocean Breezes on the screened porch that runs along the entire front of the house without baking in the heat of Charleston's summer sun or catch some afternoon rays or evening cocktails in complete privacy of the back sundeck which boasts a fully enclosed shower complete with a changing area, a gas grill, generous seating and plenty of space for entertaining or just lounging about. We also have 2 bikes for conveniently touring the island. Folly Island is pedestrian and bicycle friendly so motorists have become accustom to yielding to bicyclists on the island.

Needs deep cleaning

At first glance, the house looks just like the pictures, which is nice. I appreciate the tidiness and amenities offered. However, there was a terrible 'outhouse' smell in the bathroom, and a mold smell throughout the house. This was enough to keep us out of the house as much as possible. We also found that the floor and doorknobs were sticky, the doors and baseboards were brown with grime, the towels were stained, the porch furniture was sandy, and we saw several bugs in the house and on the porch. Considering the long clean-up list for guests at check-out plus the cleaning fee, I was very disappointed in the cleanliness upon my arrival. This is an old house that needs DEEP cleaning. The house next door was for sale and had an equally bad smell in the yard - I assume it is septic tank issues. Not the experience I was hoping for on my vacation.

Owner's Response: These guests arrived less than a week after hurricane Irma came up the coast. Folly Beach and our property took a beating. We had over 4 feet of water in the front yards in this area that took over 2 weeks to dry out. All of Folly Beach had an odor from standing water and decaying debris which took almost a month to get cleaned up. I know for a fact that any odors were a product of this. My wife and I spent 3 days cleaning up the yard debris that was accessible, much of it was still submerged and confess we tracked lots dirt and sand through the house during that time. Our cleaning is sub-contracted out and we were certain that before any future guests arrived they would thoroughly clean the inside as needed. What we did not and usually don't do is follow up behind the cleaning service. Our mistake. This house gets a deep cleaning twice a year before and after the peek season. In the high demand season there is a 6 hour window for a cleaning service to clean and setup for the next arrival. They generally do a wonderful job but with the higher post hurricane demand for their cleaning services I'll admit they did come up short. But this is something we discovered on our own, certainly not from this guest who has never contacted us. Until seeing this review 5 weeks after their stay we had no idea they were dissatisfied. In our welcome letter we specifically request that if there are any problems, please contact us immediately so we can address them immediately. As for sand on the porch furniture, you're staying in a house at the beach. Sand can blow onto the porch in a matter of hours after having it cleaned. I can guarantee that the towels and linens are cleaned and sanitized for every guests arrival. That's not to say that a stained towel can't slip through the cracks. We are a VRBO, not a hotel and do not have the luxury of an on site laundry and a generous linen and towel budget. I believe our guest started this as a review and it ended up a novel. I can't imagine why this or any guest would not have contacted us immediately versus never and then post this review 5 weeks later. In hindsight what we probably should have done was canceled their reservation, refunded their money and not accepted any future guests until all repairs from the damage left in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma had been made. My sincere apologies to this guest but had we known at the time there was a problem, we could have addressed it then and avoided all of this negativity.

Comfy and quaint!

Perfect size little home for my husband and I’s First trip to Folly. Loved the town, everything was a walkable distance from the home... we would actually walk over to the beach then down! Beach is further than I envisioned but still not far at all. We loved the restaurants in town, so much so that we only traveled into Charleston 2 times. All in all, we had a great time and loved our stay at the cozy little cottage!

Great little place to get away.

The property was clean and well stocked with all the essentials. It was very comfortable and located just off of the beach. We rode the bikes from one end of the island to the other. Great vacation.
