Overview

About the property

Chateau / Country House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10 max)

Custom built English Tudor style home located on a 400 acre ranch. This secluded ranch borders Cal Poly State University property and is situated 2.3 miles from Highway 1 on a part paved/ part all-weather gravel road. The house has 4 bedrooms and 3 baths and sleeps 8-10 with a king, 3 queens and 2 twin beds. It has hardwood floors and granite counter tops. The kitchen is fully equipped and has an adjoining sitting area where guests can relax on a couch, enjoy the expansive view and chat with the chef while he or she prepares meals. The library is stocked with an eclectic collection of books. The home has high speed satellite internet access and good cell phone reception. There are 2 HD flat screen TV's (the downstairs TV is 47') connected to a satellite dish which provides premium channel programming. Each TV has a DVD player with a selection of titles. The living room, with its mahogany paneling, leather couches and piano arrayed before a magnificent fireplace, is reminiscent of a British gentleman's club or hunting lodge. Outside, the patio and garden have ample seating with both a wood-burning Santa Maria style bbq and conventional propane grill for your outdoor cooking experience. During the wet months, the outdoor fire pit is ideal for roasting hotdogs, marshmellos or just sitting around the fire under the stars.

Mike Kirschner, one of the owners' sons, lives in the stable building located approximately 100 yards downhill from the main house and is available to answer questions or help guests with any problems that may arise during their stay.

Guests are encouraged to bring their hiking boots and binoculars. The ranch is surrounded by rural Cal Poly property with its extensive system of dirt roads on which one can literally bike or hike for miles. For a more adventuresome and secluded experience, guests are welcome to explore the ranch itself which is home to deer, turkeys, coyotes, raptors and other native animals and birds. Those energetic enough to hike to the top of the ridge above the house will be treated to a spectacular view of Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo in the valley below and the Pacific Ocean ten miles distant.

Whether you are visiting this area to sample its world-famous wines and restaurants, to explore its pristine coastline or simply to relax and unwind, you'll be glad you selected the Stenner Creek ranch as your home away from home during your stay.

About Chuck Kirschner

Our family has lived in San Luis Obispo since the mid- 1950's and we purchased this ranch in the early 1970's. After retiring from his medical practice, our father built his dream house on the ranch and moved there to raise British White Park Cattle. We have decided to offer the property as a vacation rental because of its unique character and ideal location near the City of SLO.

Chuck Kirschner purchased this chateau / country house in 1970

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The single most striking aspect of the property is the serenity one experiences while there. The only sounds you're likely to hear are the wind in the oak trees, cawing crows, squawking bluejays, the occasional scream of a hunting red-tail hawk , maybe a coyote in the evening and the distant sound of a train as it makes its way up or down Cuesta Grade. The outside world feels very far away even though, in reality, the City of SLO is just a short five minute drive away.

Perfect location to relax for the weekend

  • 5 of 5

My group had an amazing time staying at this house. The pictures were spot on to what we experienced there. The kitchen was fully stocked with the tools to cook breakfast and dinners. We couldn't connect to the Wifi but still had 5 bars out in the valley, so it wasn't much of a problem. The communication with Chuck on planning to visit this place has been top notch. He always responded to my emails within a few hours. Thank you for making my first VRBO visit as smooth as possible. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone with a large group that wants to get away from the city life.

Nice large house and yard

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay and the house was perfect for our group. I wish we had more time to enjoy the yard and the scenery. The drive to get to the house was a little longer than I expected, but Not too bad since we brought everything we needed. Chuck was very accomodating and easy to communicate with. Overall would recommend!

Beautiful rolling hills with spectacular views! Felt a bit like Tuscany!

  • 5 of 5

One feels like they are in the Italian countryside. Olive and oak trees surround you and all one hears is the wind through the tall grass, the red tails, and the creek. The backyard is perfect for celebrating “anything!” The house itself is full of character. Only difficulty are the locations of 3 great bathrooms. Two are only accessible through the 2 master bedrooms. Other than this little inconvenience, this house is a gem in the rough! Can’t wait to return!

Country living without the hassle

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at this “chateau”. So quiet and secluded, but yet so close to town. We rented for our family for Cal Poly graduation. The house was perfect for the 9 of us and we were able to enjoy all of the indoor and outdoor areas without having to go into SLO on such a busy weekend. We cooked most of our meals at the house. The kitchen is set up well and made that easy to do for such a large group. The beds are all very comfy. While the bathroom set up is a little odd, it worked and was not an inconvenience. This is a fun, unique setting for large groups and families. Highly recommended!

Idyllic Property

  • 5 of 5

Wow! First of all, Chuck was great to work with in booking this rental! The house was idyllic! We kept saying how it reminded us of Kate Winslet's house from The Holiday (except much larger). Plenty of space for all 10 of us, we were able to enjoy the nice large fireplace in the living room, such a treat. Great kitchen to cook in, had all the cookware you need! The real reason for coming here are the views! Everywhere you turn you feel like you are in the hills of The Sound of Music! Not too far from town, but you definitely feel in a remote location.

A Slice of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our visit could not have been better. The house is spectacular, the view unbelievable, the early morning air and late night fires, the hammocks, the frogs singing and the wild turkeys talking, all simply enchanting.

Our children are grown. We picked up our son in SoCal and drove up to SLO, where we met up with our daughter and her boyfriend (a first class chef!-) who live in San Francisco and drove down to meet us at the Stenner Ranch for five nights.

We had the perfect time - a couple of day trips to the beach and Morro Bay, Novo creekside downtown.

But the best part was hanging out together at "The Chateau."

And eating Loren's food!

Thanks for sharing, Chuck!
