Vintage BARN Apartment-POOL-HotTub-FirePit-Hiking-Museums-Theater-Pets welcome!
Ideal for VT/MA/NY Vacation, this unique property is unlike any you've ever seen. Entrance is though a brick courtyard up a spiral staircase (alternate handicap entry is available - please inquire in advance) to a huge balcony with hot tub, gas grill, and dining table for six.
This renovated 1938 dairy barn with its 1963 additions is a Vermont icon with 'rooms' cleverly defined throughout the spacious, loft-style 2100 sq. ft. The kitchen, dining “room”, media “room”, and bunk "house" are located in the original structure, and the living “room”, master bed “room”, bathroom/laundry are in the 1963 addition with a big barn door separating the two open layouts.
The large kitchen was designed with a family of chefs in mind and includes the Media area at the far end, perfect for informal gatherings. Kitchen is fully supplied with all necessities for the usual culinary activities, and has a dishwasher, gas stove, refrigerator, free-standing freezer, microwave and a variety of smaller appliances.
The kitchen flows into the media area with a flat screen TV and full+ sofa bed we enhance with a memory-foam topper. Please request use of this bed in advance and know once a bed, it cannot be folded up to be used as a sofa during the day.
Around the corner is the dining room with seating for 6, expandable to 8. The outdoor grill is just a few steps away so you can still BBQ when its too cold to eat outdoors. A Vermont slate buffet invites you to plan serve-yourself meals, with chairs comfortable enough to encourage after-dinner conversation!
Next comes the bunk area with accommodations for four youngsters or teens. (Top bunks are not good for adults due to low ceiling.) New memory-foam mattresses encourage a good night's sleep after skiing, swimming or just lounging around.. There is also a game table for those who remember how to play games without batteries, and a couple of bean bag chairs for reading, texting or playing those games that do require batteries.
The media, dining and bunk areas and much of the kitchen are closed off on three sides being open to the passage area.
Through the barn door is the accommodating living room with a gas log stove, big comfy furniture and soaring cathedral ceiling. If you're trying to break the TV habit there's a library with something for every taste, G-rated that is. The amazing feature of this wing is the seven floor-to-ceiling stained glass windows installed over 60 years ago. One has even been made into an emergency exit to bring the building up to 21st century safety-standards.
Behind a partition created by a row of 9' high closets is the master bedroom with king bed and additional closets. A quiet work space in the bedroom is an ideal respite for a type A personality who can't leave it all at the office.
The bathroom doubles as a laundry with large capacity, low-flo/low-energy machines. The shower is ample for two people, but tub enthusiasts will have to hit the deck and use the hot tub.
The pool and yard are for guests from both apartments to enjoy. The deck box in the courtyard includes croquet and other outdoor games. You can enjoy the large lawn area big enough for tournament croquet, swim in the seasonal 30' lap pool, or use the bikes (please request at time of reservation) for a stress-reducing ride around one of the nearby scenic loops. Or, use the bike rack to transport them for, say, a historic tour around Old Bennington following in the footsteps of Ethan Allen or a shop-free trip to Camelot Village where two barns full of antiques and handmade crafts are offered..
Grilling and dining out are purely private as is enjoying the hot tub and your own fire pit located behind the pool. If you bring additional chairs from the courtyard, please remember to bring them back! Also, you may want bug repellant out in our wilderness!!
Cable TV, CD and WIFI included.
Limited local bus service is provided by Green Mountain Express, and taxi by Walt's, Uber and Lyft.
Six miles to Williamstown, MA and 6 miles to Bennington, VT; both with scores of recreational, entertainment, culinary, and cultural venues. See our website www.ourcountryproperty.com.
Pets are permitted under most circumstances -- please inquire -- at a rate of $15 per pet per day. (NOTE: Vrbo has now set up a payment option for the pet fee plus tax/Vrbo fee.)
We are always available via Vrbo, cell, text or email for any and all questions or recommendations. Sandy (house manager) and Dwayne (maintenance) are nearby and easily reachable, especially since they are a married couple.
We require peace and quiet from our guests, and events and partying are not permitted. The normal "fun" noises associated with outdoor games and pool activities during appropriate hours are, of course, expected.
Note to renters: 99% of our guests love staying here and recommend us to their friends. Fewer than 1% have a problem with the rough-hewn barn boards, the windows not designed to open, an occasional mouse "leave-behind", the proximity to a road, and any number of observations about a barn converted into a residence that maintains a barn-like flavor. So if these things bother you please do not rent from us! We depend on good reviews and a good rental season to cover the costs of owning this rural treasure.
A second apartment is a wholly separate space that can be rented and accessed first floor of the 1963 wing or, by special arrangement, through the interior service entrances and staircase.
On rare occasion, you may see us enter our studio at the other end of the complex, but we're quiet as church mice. When (rarely) in Vermont we usually stay out in the commercial parking lot in our RV in order to maximize your privacy. We never avail ourselves of any amenity except walking our dogs in the side yard when they aren't enjoying Pawnel Pets, our fabulous doggie daycare. We are only there when maintenance issues or repairs necessitate our presence to make sure your stay is enjoyable.

The host , the property and all it had to offer! It checked off everything we wanted for an escape. Hot tub, grill, privacy, quiet, football, space to roam- amazing water pressure too! - highly recommend if you’re looking for a unique stay with Vermont feel!
Beautiful barn style home that can accommodate a crowd. My husband and I found the two separate sitting spaces very comfortable (especially the room with the stained glass windows). Gives you a feeling of being in a Victorian library. We were stuck indoors for our trip and were grateful for being where we were.
We had a very peaceful and relaxing stay. The atmosphere was quiet and calming, perfect for unwinding. Everything about our time here was enjoyable, and we truly appreciated the serene environment. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a restful getaway!
We had a wonderful stay here in Pownal!! We came for a writing retreat, looking for a cozy property with space to think, work, catch up, and relax. Talk about inspiring surroundings!! The property is cozy and well kept, with a spacious kitchen and plenty of little luxuries! Warm floors in the bathroom and a hot tub, fireplace… it’s a perfect spot. The property manager was communicative and friendly. Highly recommended!
The pictures were absolutely spot on! The space was incredibly quiet and cozy, with a warm and inviting atmosphere—even in zero-degree weather. The hot tub was fantastic, and the heated bathroom floors were a luxurious touch. The WiFi worked flawlessly throughout the property. The chef’s kitchen was spacious and well-equipped, making it perfect for cooking. Plus, the rental is conveniently close to town, and the breathtaking mountain views made the stay even more special. Highly recommend!
A Much Needed Getaway in our favorite state..Vermont
The house is tucked in from a main road which gives easy access to Bennington, North Adams and Williamstown. The house was a dream. From the layout of the house and the wonderful hot tub, it was what we needed. Sandy the caretaker was very kind and sweet. We definitely want to stay again in the future.

Gabe and I are so happy you enjoyed our former home s much as we did. We'd be more than happy to welcome you back!
We loved this place the first time we stayed....this time was even better since we timed the cross-country ski conditions perfectly (meaning, we lucked out). However, even last time when it was cold and sleeting......this place in front of the fire was warm and relaxing......

Great to hear you had an even better trip than last year! There is nothing like a good hot tub soak after XC skiing! Once again you were great guests and we hot to have you back.
It was a beautiful home. The owners knew it was our Anniversary and to our surprise there was champagne in the fridge for us with a card. The court yard was wonderful to have are morning coffee in. The caretakers were wonderful people answered any questions or small issues we had. The library was a book lovers dream. It was a great location very close to Bennington. It was a little closer to the road then I expected but the property had a nice side yard to walk the dog around. The master bed was very comfortable. It was wonderful to have a small fire outside at night and there was even a smores kit available for us. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
We loved the place, it was very clean, warm and quiet except for vehicles on the main road but that can be tuned out with time. The location was good and close to many shops, trails, ranches and restaurants. We enjoyed the fireplace and mostly every room in the place. Our only complain is with the hot tub, the host puts too much bleach on it and it was stuck to our skin all night even after multiple showers. I recommend not putting so much bleach in such a small space. Other than that our stay was pleasurable and we look forward to coming again

I am glad Fernando and his guest enjoyed their time in Vermont. Had they mentioned their concern with the hot tub, I could have informed them that, 1) we use bromine to sanitize the water, not bleach, and 2) the amounts are determined by water tests and are not arbitrary.
We really enjoyed our week in Vermont! Bennington is such a cute town, and Williams College such a pretty campus and good eateries close by. Williamstown and Mass MoCA was a fun afternoon. House is large and fun for the kids. Loved having access to a nice washer and dryer. Huge kitchen. Thanks for having cable TV! A lot of properties don't. We all enjoyed the hot tub every evening. Sandy, your house manager is lovely and very responsive. Happy New Year!
A belated but hugely sincere THANK YOU! We really enjoyed your property, which is unique and wonderful. The renovated building is truly ‘one-of-a-kind’, and was perfect for our 5 day stay in Vermont and as a part of our second honeymoon. The floor plan was well laid out and spacious, and the old stained-glass windows really created/added to a cool environment! We stayed there in late August just before Labor Day, so the general area was quiet, and the private location gave us easy access to a bunch of Bennington area hiking trails and the entire surrounding area provided great food and scenery. Sandy was on-call when we had a minor question and was very knowledgeable about the area. We definitely look forward to staying again in the future. Thank you again!

Beautiful, unique home!
My husband and I stayed here with our dog July 16 - 21 and we were all very sad when it was time to leave. Pride of ownership shows throughout and the pictures do not do it justice! The home is very clean with a "country" feel with wide plank wood floors, wood beams, barn doors, stained glass windows but it still offers modern amenities and conveniences. We enjoyed the private pool by day and watched the amazing sunsets from the hot tub at night. The mountain views from the deck are breathtaking!
There's quite a bit to do in the area. It's close to Bennington which is a quaint town with shops and restaurants and there are several state parks with lakes and hiking trails near by.
We had the pleasure of meeting the owners upon check-in. They were so friendly and took the time to answer our questions and show us around.
We hope to get back there again soon and I would highly recommend this place! Thank you so much Pat and Gabe for sharing this little piece of heaven with us!!

Lovely stay over the holidays
We enjoyed a quiet holiday there. The master bedroom/living room was beautiful, cozy and comfortable. The owner arranged to have a Christmas tree placed in the living room, which made it more special. The hot tub was clean and perfectly hot on the cold evenings. We were happy to find such a lovely dog-friendly place, just needed to make some minor adjustments there to protect fragile items around and sofas that she was not permitted on (we moved small items temporarily and had brought two sets of full-sized bedsheets for the long sectional that worked well). We were also not prepared for the metal spiral staircase outside leading to the unit, which our pup was too frightened to use (fortunately there was a garage entrance we were permitted use to take her in and out). There were tenants downstairs for most of our stay but it was not too disruptive to our peace or privacy. The manager Sally is a lovely woman, down to earth, easy to reach and helpful with questions. She works hard to keep the entire space spotless and nicely arranged. Overall it was a very nice getaway for our first visit to Vermont!

Glad your pup liked the service (garage) entrance and you understood our difficulty cleaning microfiber upholstery. Be sure you mention the service entrance should you ever return. Most medium to large dogs are fine with the stairs and the smaller ones get carried so our manager doesn't always think of it.

The perfect winter getaway
We rented the main portion of this property for two months over this past winter. We are a family of five with younger children. Despite a very mild (at least in terms of snow) winter, this property amounted to a winter sanctuary for us. At nights, our kids did homework in various areas. We indulged wine or books in another. Throughout, our german shepherd invariably napped on the heated bathroom floor. It is an extremely peaceful location. The pictures do not reflect how big this rental actually is. It was very clean and all of the amenities were as described and in working order. Any minor issues were quickly addressed by the owners and/or their property manager. If you are willing to go off mountain in the winter and reside in Connecticut or New York, this property is less than an hour to at least 5 ski resorts and represents a relatively painless Friday/Sunday night commute from or to home. At least a half dozen quality restaurants can be found within a 20 minute drive, if not less. We visited and enjoyed Kevin's Sports Pub (Bennington), PUBLIC eat & drink (No. Adams) and Coyote Flaco (Williamstown) on more than one occasion. I would pass on Cozy Corner (Williamstown). We highly recommend the property. P.S. The hot tub was used daily and offers great views!!

I just want to say how happy Gabe and I were at the respect and care you gave our delicate, cherished home. A lengthy stay by a family with children and pet was a bit of a worry, and I can say you didn't so much as leave a footprint. You are welcome anytime.
The Balcony unit has a unique configuration that is huge and cozy at the same time. Pictures don't capture this spectacular space! It worked well for our family of four but some layout quirks should be noted.
Main entry is up a spiral staircase from the patio behind the building.
Guests should be aware the bunk beds are only partially separated from kitchen and dining area (in case young kids need quiet to sleep).
The king bed shares space with the living area in the barn. The bed is separated by abundant storage units that can't reach the soaring barn ceilings.
Access to the one bathroom is also through the barn/bedroom space.
The huge sectional couch in the barn was a favorite cozy spot.
The oversized kitchen looks like a chefs dream but might frustrate efforts to actually prepare food for a crowd. The oven took a long time to even reach 350; the dishwasher and microwave have seen better days. There is a second living area off the kitchen which did provide a retreat away from the sleeping areas.
Full-sized laundry in the bathroom was a bonus. We didn't get to the pool during our stay, but the hot tub was delightful.
It would be helpful to show the roadside exterior in the rental listing as the written directions were confusing (across from the backside of the town hall?!) A single photo could help guests locate the distinctive barn building more easily.
In spite of the quirks, we will likely stay again for the access to Williamstown and Bennington. are

Beautiful and spacious but noisy and not as private as expected
This is a unique apartment that was mostly great for our family of two adults and two teens. It was clean, colorful, and very spacious. I think the listing does a great job of highlighting all the cool things about the property, but there are a few downsides that surprised us, which future guests may want to consider when deciding whether to book.
In reading my review keep in mind: I think the unit is priced fairly given the downsides — call them trade-offs—but it wasn’t easy to tell from the listing exactly what we were trading off. For this reason in my review I’m focusing on the trade-offs we didn’t realize we were making when we booked.
We were surprised to learn upon arrival that there are two vacation rentals in this building. This made it both noisier and less private than we expected.
NOISE. The downstairs apartment is directly beneath the master bedroom of this unit. While in the master bedroom, we were able to hear everything going on downstairs -- conversations, television, game playing -- was all audible nearly to the point that we could follow along. The owners have a strict "Quiet Hours" policy, but most of the noise we heard at midnight was just regular conversation that kept me up because of the way sound traveled through the floor and heat ducts, and it didn’t seem reasonable to ask them to stop talking altogether. On our last night there was a large group downstairs (I counted 5 or 6 voices) and we could hear them playing a TV trivia game past midnight. I could have asked them to be quiet, or I could have contacted the property manager, but it’s just not the sort of thing I want to deal with on vacation.
PRIVACY. The other surprise for me was that all of the outdoor spaces are shared with both units. The hot tub in particular is weirdly located for sharing, as it’s on the upper unit deck, just steps from your double glass doors. So even if you don’t plan to use the hot tub yourself, you could have strangers hot tubbing right next to you while you eat dinner, use the grill, or watch the sunset.
Other tradeoffs:
Beautiful stained glass windows = limited natural light indoors and no mountain views.
Being right on Route 7 (a highway, not a “village setting” and not a quiet country road) = rumbling trucks, traffic noise, no birdsong.
Barn = mice.
All in all an interesting property, I think fairly priced, but with some trade-offs that will be worth it for some people but not for others.

You are absolutely right about the other guests. They were rude, rowdy, drunk, and completely disrespectful, AND there were more of them than permitted. It got much worse after you left, too! I wish you would have called! We are so, so sorry! BUT, we discovered that the registers had been opened and the baffles in the heating ducts had shifted, both adding to the sound transfer. All of that has been fixed and even fortified. (That master bedroom was ours for eight years and you can be assured we took steps to mitigate any noise.) Also, I have instructed Sue to specifically inform all guest apartment renters that the hot tub is not available for their use. We'd love to make it up to you if you can call to discuss it.
We loved seeing how creatively and wonderfully this barn was renovated into a beautiful and unique space. Every detail seems to have been considered, from the heated floor in the spacious bathroom, to the romantic sitting room with the fire place full of books and historic decor. We loved just exploring everything on display. We also fought off the cold to enjoy the hot tub and grill. Everything worked great and instructions for every part of the stay were supplied. It was great knowing that the property care taker was close by. We weren’t sure if it would truly be a private experience since the lower part of the barn is another rented space, but even with guests occupying it we felt like we were all to ourselves. Loved this stay so much, thank you for sharing it with us!
We LOVED this property. Gabe and Pat were the right amount of communicative prior to our arrival and Sandy greeted us, gave us a great tour, and even sent us some hiking recommendations in the area. The kitchen is a DREAM, the barn is unbelievably charming (I LOVE the stained glass windows), and the bathroom floors were a welcome treat during a cold snap. The space is 15 minutes to North Adams and Williamstown so it was easy to find entertainment and enjoy the Clark Museum. I'm definitely bookmarking this place for future Berkshire adentures.

Best mini vacation ever!
Had probably the best time on a mini-vacation we’ve ever had! Wonderful ambiance especially when “snowed in” in front of the fire with a selection from the extensive library. Making s’mores in February was definitely a first! When we discovered our neighbors doing the same in their fire pit, we joined forces. I think we made friends for life. Sitting in the hot tub with snow flakes landing on your face while sipping scotch was like a scene from a movie. Sue, the manager, was very informative and attentive and makes the best banana bread ever! We will definitely be back, hopefully when we can also enjoy the pool and relax and cook out on the deck

Apartment was really nice but location and downstairs apartment was not disclosed. No privacy.
The accommodations were as described and very nice but the location and privacy were misleading. The pool and hottub were shared with the apartment downstairs which was not disclosed in the rental site or by the owner at check in. There is no private balcony as the hottub is on the balcony and available for others to use. This is not a private country getaway rather a nicely appointed roadside apartment.

Mr. P seemed unhappy from the minute he arrived conveying his displeasure to our manager and letting our foreign visitors in the guest house know he resented their presence. They have apologized for possibly being overly enthusiastic when playing games with their two teenaged kids, and I have extended that apology to Mr. P. Had we or our manager, who lives right across the street, been notified we would have emphatically enforced our written "peace and quiet" policy. I'm not sure it would have helped, however, as Mr. P. was one of our more challenging guests over the past 10 years of rentals, complaining about everything from the rustic character of the building to the size of the pool to refusing to pay the $15 per night dog fee. I am so very sorry he expected a McMansion and got our funky, fun hideaway. We do try to make everyone's stay as enjoyable as possible but sometimes fail in spite of that effort. BTW,, the second-floor deck IS private to this rental and contains the hot tub, gas grill, and outdoor dining. While we occasionally invite the guest apartment residents to use the hot tub when there are no guests in the main residence, the hot tub is not listed as an amenity for that rental. I am truly sorry that family took it upon themselves to invade Mr.P.'s space.

Amazing!!
My wife and I and 2 dogs stayed in Vermont for 1 week and we ended our last 3 days by staying in this beautiful location. I kept it a surprise from my wife because I knew she would love this place.... and she did. She loved the spaciousness of the place. The wood floors, the gi-normous kitchen, the high ceilings and the general comfort of the place.
We coordinated with the caretaker of the property, Lisa, regarding our arrival. Upon arrival she met us and gave us a tour of the place, showed us the switches and features of the place.....the only initial tricky thing I would say is getting to the garage because of all the doors. After finding the correct sequence the first time your fine;)
The first night of our stay we realized the hot water wasn't very hot. At first we weren't sure whether this was normal since it was our first night. Lisa was very easily contacted and she informed Mr. Palmer of the concern. The next morning I had the opportunity to talk to Mr.Palmer and he said it would be looked into and taken care of. He was good on his word because upon return from our day's activities we were pleasantly surprised to have hotter water.
The pictures in the Ads are nice but really don't do it justice. Not until you are standing there do you appreciate the enormity, beauty, serenity and spaciousness of the place. Thank you Mr. Palmer and Ms. Kane for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home.

I couldn't have written a better review myself. Thank you so very much. I'm intrigued that you kept this rental from your wife as a surprise. We recently had a couple visit because staying in a converted barn is on their retirement bucket list! Using the garage entrance is for luggage loading and unloading only. We do not encourage guests to use it for more than that (unless handicapped) as it leaves the entire complex open to intruders. Those with a compelling reason for using the garage entrance should discuss it with our caretaker and receive the proper instructions and keys for keeping the building buttoned up.

Perfect place to vacation with kids
We really enjoyed our stay here! The house was beautiful- beautiful stained glass windows, a neat layout and a great bedroom with bunk beds that my son loved! I had been a little too worried that the bedroom with bunk beds described as being in the original barn was going to be too far separated from us, but it wasn't at all. The hot tub was fantastic too!
The owners, Pat and Gabe, were really attentive and helpful, providing information on things to do in the area. Lisa, the property manager, was fantastic as well and went out of her way to show us the ins and outs of the house upon our arrival.
We'll definitely be back!

I have to absolutely thank you and your family for being such ideal guests. We had just recovered from a family who's stay can only be described as a train wreck; two undisciplined dogs, two undisciplined children; two undisciplined parents. You have given us renewed hope that there are still people out there who respect and appreciate someone's home. We are actually thinking about writing up a Kiddie Dos and Don'ts to accompany our Doggie Dos and Don'ts. Thank you for not needing it! You are welcome back any time.

What can I say? We are creatives who love the beauty and serenity of this place. We spent our adult lives in Fairfield County CT with a 8-year sabbatical in Vermont, and looked for a location that would not only fulfill our space requirements but meet our emotional needs as well. We shared this environment with Rooney McDuff a spirited, way-too-loving golden retriever. Now, we share our new CT home with Molly McDuff a high energy hound who loves every other human and pup on earth! We've always loved one-of-a-kind places, and this definitely fit the bill. Then, when a one-of-a-kind granddaughter came along, it was back to Connecticut where we now have a second broke-the-mold granddaughter!
Why they chose this property
Well, this is more than a vacation rental; it's an entire lifestyle. Pownal Valley is probably one of the most beautiful in all of Vermont. Rolling limestone mountains might not make for double black diamond ski runs but they do make for fabulous vistas. Our views are without challenge anywhere throughout New England. Our complex is convenient to Route 7 but our guests ALL say the property feels private and peaceful.
We moved here full-time in January of 2007. In a portion of our barn complex we operated a commercial photo studio and a craft gallery and later added a homemade ice cream service window. Recent events have caused us to move back to Connecticut where we can be helpful to our family and pursue some other interests. In the meantime you can enjoy our beautiful Vermont propert.
What makes this property unique
This is all about peace and relaxation; and not a partying place by any stretch. For our rental guests: Private balcony for grilling and dining, full-length lap pool for a leisurely swim or a good workout, hot tub for a satisfying de-stressing. AND a large flat, safe yard for kids and dogs to play! The use of the courtyard is reserved for grilling and dining by the guests in the other apartment.
Oh, did I mention there are about a million things to do around here? Our central location allows you to explore attractions in three states, too numerous to mention here. Just let us know your interests and we'll do our best to steer you in the right direction.
