Cozy Converted Barn on Secluded 6.5 acres

Sleeps8
Bedrooms 1
Bathrooms1
Space 1,650 sq ft
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Overview

About the property

1 bedroom + large loft, 1 bathroom, sleeps 4 comfortably (8 max).

Spend the month, week or weekend in a beautiful rustic converted barn on 6.5 very private sunny country acres with southerly long-range views of Mt. Anthony and the Bennington Monument (Stays of 2 or more weeks are progressively discounted depending on the length of the stay. Contact owner for these prices as they may not be reflected in the quote given). Wander the park-like trails through 4 acres of old apple orchard and woodland. Why get a bed and breakfast when you can have a house and land all to yourself? This vacation rental is located in southwestern Vermont, less than 12 minutes from downtown Bennington (but still feels very quiet and secluded). Pick apples, bird-watch, and view other wildlife like deer, grouse, wild turkeys, rabbits, Lynx, and Bob-cats. Excellent fly fishing on the nearby Battenkill river. Attend the summer horse shows in nearby Manchester. Enjoy the world-famous Vermont fall foliage. Watch the flowers bloom in the spring. Ski or snowshoe in the winter. Enjoy a bon-fire in the back-yard. Five major ski areas are located within an hour's drive. House is fully furnished and has slate shower, bear-claw bath tub, gas cooking stove, microwave, refrigerator, dish washer, cable, DVD/VCR, and wireless internet, plus two wood stoves and free wood to keep you warm at night (There's also central air heating and a portable air-conditioner if needed). There's a large downstairs master bedroom with its own gas stove/fireplace for ambiance and extra heat. There is a living room, dining area, and another small room that could sleep 2 with large electric blowup mattress on site. A spiral staircase leads up to a large loft with a full-sized spring mattress futon. There's also a love seat that pulls out into a double size bed. The barnhouse was actually part of a large picturesque Vermont farm just up the dirt road (and view-able from parts of the property) until it was rolled down on logs and converted into a house some years ago.

*** Although the website lists my cancellation policy as "no refund" this is not quite true (It's just that none of the other options I was given matched my actual cancellation policy). Please refer to the "Generic Rental Agreement" pdf that you will be able to view once you start the booking process (and must agree to before making payment) for details on my cancellation policy.

*** Contact me for additional information on steep discounts for stays of 2 or more weeks.

About Lars

Lars (pictured here with his childhood sweetheart and wife Kristen) teaches high school biology, chemistry, and environmental science just outside of Philadelphia. He is a VERY avid skier who also enjoys camping, hiking, mountaineering, kite-surfing, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and spending time with his wife and children. Kristen teaches electronic engineering at the college level and is an avid wind surfer, hiker, and skier.

Lars purchased this barn in 2003

Why Lars chose South Shaftsbury

This is the perfect property to relax and unwind in total privacy. Vermont in general is a very relaxed, friendly place. Southwestern Vermont is IMO the most beautiful part of Vermont. If you are looking for stress reduction, a romantic get-away, and tons of outdoor activities, you found the perfect place.

What makes this barn unique

If you are looking for authentic Vermont country living and something a little out of the ordinary, look no further.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We recently spent one week at the barn during Thanksgiving. It was an idyllic place, perfect for relaxing and spending time with family and friends. The barn was warm and cozy. It took very little effort to keep the wood stove going. I could see myself spending a month at the barn - hibernating with a pile of books and taking leisurely walks around the property. It was very comfortable to share with three teenage girls. They occupied the loft area and we had a bedroom to ourselves. Thanks you Lars!

Our Vermont Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We loved the converted barn and the property was beautiful and very peaceful. We did not want to leave but unfortunately we have responsibilities back home . It was exactly the vacation we were looking for . This place was very clean and accommodating . Lars was available if we had any questions . We didn’t see much wildlife while we were there but there were lots of birds chirping. Our stay took us around the area to different shops , restaurants and exploring the sites . A must when visiting the area is the sugar shack for their maple vanilla shakes . The shakes are unbelievable!! A must try 😊?. Dinner at the publik House which is down the road from the rental . This place has delicious food and beautiful views !!! Don’t forget to check out the antique shops . Make sure you bring home some maple syrup and cheese ! That is also a must . We just want to thank Lars for sharing this beautiful place with us . We definitely recommend this place if your looking for a peaceful stay and beautiful scenery . We miss this place already. Thanks again Lars. Rob & Michele September, 2018

lovely, beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

Great barn with full amenities. Hidden location yet near all essentials. Very detail directions regarding use of home. We had minor issues and owner(Lars) took care of them. We would come back during any season! Loved it!

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

I read through many of the other reviews to see if there's anything I can add, and all I can say is ditto! We just spent an awesome week here with our 2 dogs & couldn't have had a better, more relaxing vacation in a beautiful, unique home on an equally beautiful & unique piece of property. In case it hasn't been mentioned elsewhere, the Kelly Stand Road drive is quite spectacular (as was the view from Robin's Lookout on Mount Equinox).

Amazing property in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

This converted barn is just spectacular. Thousands of beautiful and interesting details. A truly special place to stay. The paths through the woods were one of our favorite parts. And we were lucky enough to get a night of thunderstorms and rain which sound wonderful inside the house. The night it didn't rain we sat out watching the fireflies and stars. Lars was incredibly communicative and available and helpful. Made everything very easy. The area itself is amazing. We visited covered bridges, took our motorcycle up Mount Equinox, and went for gorgeous rides. Billy Ts was an awesome place to eat nearby...the lobster rolls are to die for, and totally unexpected! I can't wait to go back, everything was so special, we had an amazing vacation.

Private, Peaceful, Beautiful - easy access to Bennington's ammenities.

  • 4 of 5

My family and I enjoyed an eight night stay. The cabin and property are VERY quiet and secluded, but with easy access to grocery shopping and restaurants in Bennington. There was plenty of room on the property for the kids to run and play, and for relaxation and reading. The kids enjoyed swimming in the quarry in Dorset and at Lake Shaftsbury which has a very family-friendly State-park.

The cabin is charming - cozy, rustic, comfortable, and clean. Think of an above-ground hobbit home. We had a flying visitor to our master-bedroom at night (only twice) but after that, no further problems. Lars (our host) was very accommodating and was always only a phone-call, email, or text away. There are plenty of games, books, and movies available for rainy nights or lazy evenings. However, if you're a parent and have children sleeping in the loft, be aware that some of the movies up in the loft have content and themes you may not want your kids viewing.

Outstanding

  • 5 of 5

The home is absolutely outstanding in every way. It is totally isolated from the world, but just minutes away from everything else you may want. Please dine at The Publyk House-- also outstanding. Our dog LOVED running around the property , chasing anything that moved. If I could give it 10 stars , I would. And Lars couldn't possibly be more accomodating-- always available , always happy to help. We had a wonderful time seeing Vermont on our motorcycle and coming home to our wonderful home. Thank you so much, Lars.
