About Craig Erkkila

Ruby and I live in Hunterdon County ,NJ.

Craig Erkkila purchased this house in 1996

Why Craig Erkkila chose South Nags Head

We bought this house 18 years ago.

We had been renting a week in the Summer at various cottages for about ten years before.

I am from Massachusetts. At Cape Cod, you walk to the beach. We live in New Jersey. In New Jersey, everyone is on the beach from six rows of houses deep. So, about 28 years ago, we had decided that we would rather drive to the Outer Banks than deal with the stop and stop traffic from the Jersey Shore.

In 1995, the place we were staying at ,Mrs. Fitzsimmons place, which we liked, was for sale.

We asked about buying it but Chris Corbett had it already under contract. The real estate agent. Jennifer Place, motivated us to look for an ocean front house. When we saw this one, we fell in love with it. It was large, well designed, and really made you feel that you were at the beach.

What makes this house unique

Same as above.

Great Home totally awesome views

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to the outer banks for years but this was the first extended family vacation so we needed a larger home. This Home was wonderful from the location to the bedroom bathroom ratio and the views breathtaking. We set our alarm to get up every morning to watch the sunrise on the deck with our coffee. We had everything we needed and we hope that as we are trying to lock down dates for next year this Home is still available.

Fantastic Beachfront House = Fantastic Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

You can tell when the owner stays in his own house, because it is kept clean and well equipped, and this house was. From the fully equipped kitchen all the way down to the room full of beach toys, we did not want for anything. Room for 10 adults and three pre-teens. Wonderful views of the surf, we kept the A/C off most of the week and enjoyed the cool ocean breeze and sound of the waves. Very conveniently located in South Nags Head, walking distance to the fishing pier/Fishheads bar. The owner was very easy to deal with. We will be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. Yes, there is nothing like our beachfront property's endless views. We are glad that you appreciated them too. It is important to us that our house is kept clean and we are glad you found it that way. We try our best to keep things stocked and organized in the kitchen. Even though there are some excellent restaurants in our immediate area, we like to cook in too and have a fully equipped kitchen. The boogie boards and sand toys are actually from past tenants who intend to return. We are pleased that they consider this their vacation home too. We hope to have you stay at our home again next year.

Great House for Family Vacation

  • 4 of 5

This house worked out great for our family (three separate families) vacation. The space was great. The rooms with connecting bathrooms, worked out great so everyone had a bathroom. The sliding doors into the rooms were convenient, no tracking through the entire house to get to your room. The beach is a nice quiet area. The rough deck was the only thing that I was a little nervous about with our young boys but other than that it was great. We would definitely use this house again, if we return... (which I hope we do someday)

Owner's Response: Thank you. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay . Yes, the upper ocean side deck has become a little weather worn. I will be pricing sanding / refinishing this Spring. We hope to have the opportunity to be your vacation choice in the future. Craig

Amazing!!!

  • 5 of 5

This was the first time we didn't rent through a realty company in 28 years of coming to the Outerbanks so we were a little nervous. Let me tell you this was the best experience we ever had renting!!!! The house is amazing! We love the layout the master bedroom had its own bathroom and the rest of the bedrooms shared which was huge. The views were amazing from just about everywhere in the house. We loved how quiet the area is. You are only half mile from pier which is a nice walk on beach or ride your bike. We couldn't get the wifi to work so we called the owner and he talked us through how to reset. He is very accommodating so don't hesitate to call him with any issues! I would highly recommend this home!!! I'm just praying we are able to come back again next year!!!

Beachfront Property
Car: recommended

This beachfront house is located away from extremely busy areas but conveniently located for access to all kinds of activities. The house is located at mile marker 19. A short walk up the beach is Gary Oliver's Pier, which has pier fishing daily. This year's addition was nightly music. The pier side tables and chairs at the bar provide a relaxing ocean and beach view.

2 miles away form the house is Sam and Omies., Sam and Omies restaurant is great for breakfast.

A little further North on the Beach Road is Owens Restaurant, a five star dinner restaurant, definitely worth trying. If you continue up the Beach Road, there are all kinds of Souvenir shops along with a number of bars and restaurants.

But, going back to Sam and Omies, you have a choice of 3 more directions in which to go for activities.

You can take a left onto Rt. 12. Rt 12 takes you South to Bodie Island Light house nearby, then through Cape Hatteras Seashore down to Hatteras Lighthouse, ending with the ferry that you can take to Ocracoke Island.

Alteratively, at that same junction at Sam and Omies you can go straight onto 158/64 and go over the Washington Baum Bridge.

Immediately on your right is Pirates Cove Yacht Club. The boats are worth seeing. There are activities there sometimes. You can also rent a full day or half day deep sea fishing charter there. (Although I suggest calling in advance.)

Or, you can continue into Manteo and have lunch at the Weeping Radish Brewery, or proceed through Manteo to the North Carolina Aquarium or visit the Lost Colony at Roanoke. ( There are performances of the story of The Lost Colony at certain times in the Summer.)

Or a third choice is to turn North on 158 instead. Leaving Sam and Omies, take the first left off the Beach road. You will pass Whalebone Seafood Market on your left. This is a pretty good place to get fish, and conveniently located. Turning right onto 158, going North, there is Tangier Outlet Mall immediately on the opposite side of 158 with all kinds of big name brand like Coach and Ralph Lauren.. Continuing along 158 N. a few miles, there is a Food Lion for groceries. As you continue along Rt 158 N. . you will pass miniature golf, paint ball, shops and restaurants. Going even further North, about 8 miles more, there is the Wright Brothers Memorial. Jockeys Ridge Park is also a popular attraction.. While in that neck of the woods, check out Austins Fish Market. It has a great selection of fresh Local and imported fish.

Continuing all the way up to Mile Marker 2 (We started at 19) you can turn off to the right and proceed to Corolla and Duck. There is another lighthouse at Corolla. The beach at Corolla has stumps of a past forest in the water. There are said to be wild horses there. And, as you travel North, the is a huge iron gate that once separated Virginia from North Carolina.
