End of the Road Ranch: Secluded Setting, Spectacular Scenery, Truly Unique

Bedrooms 3
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

(Main House)-Sleeps 4, (Bunk House Cabin):Sleeps 4 (Waterhouse) : Sleeps 2

The End of the Road Ranch is located 8 miles north of New Castle and the Colorado River, in a spectacular setting at the mouth of East Elk Creek Canyon. It offers a panorama of views, and the mesmerizing sound of the clear, cold creek flowing out of the White River National Forest and the Flattops Wilderness area. The combination of Colorado's four seasons, southern exposures, an intimate sense of scale, makes this a unique piece of paradise, and a place for people who love to be outdoors, whatever the season.

The End of the Road Ranch provides countless opportunities for outdoor recreation, both within the property limits and on nearby public land. Biking, Cross-Country Skiing, Downhill Skiing, Fishing, Golf, Hiking, Rafting on the Colorado River, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, and the list goes on.

The ranch comfortably accommodates 6 people in the winter and many more in other seasons, in thoughtfully appointed quarters.

The Main house has a king bed and bathroom with a rain shower, an eclectic kitchen including an early 1900’s gas Pioneer stove, two under counter refrigerators, and a mix of utensils, dinnerware, pots and pans. The house is filled with light, including two separate living rooms (one with a twin bed) decorated in colorful Buddhist flags, beautiful cloth from far away places, exceptional photographs, and a fabulous collection of books.

The Water house and the Bunk house are short walks from the Main house. These houses have comfortable double beds. Rooms are warmed with radiant floor heat. Natural light is abundant.

The Water House has a rain shower and a clawfoot bathtub; it serves as a green house for plants and has a washer and dryer.

The Bunk house, located adjacent to the horse barn, has its own bathroom with tub, and a kitchen with an electric stove and oven.

The ranch is the last property in East Elk Creek Canyon before you enter the White River National Forest where hiking is excellent. Mountains surround the ranch. The pristine East Elk Creek runs through the Ranch's 36 Acres and the owner has built a sauna cabin along the creek - a great place to relax after a day of adventure.

Rates are subject to change based on the amount of occupants, number of cabins, and beds needed. Longer stays are preferred and can be negotiated for a possible reduced rate. Holiday season rates are to be negotiated with owner.

Why The Owner chose Northwest

A quote from a guest:

'End of the Road Ranch has been created out of the owner’s vision and many years of hard work. Everything on the property has been constructed or rebuilt by hand. It’s a place of happy memories. It’s a place to live in natural beauty and quiet isolation. If you come here with a sense of adventure and an open mind you will have a rewarding experience. You will leave as we did with memories for a lifetime to enjoy. You will also feel a sense of gratitude that you are “among the lucky ones”, who got the chance to experience such a unique and wonderful place. Our hats are off to our host. We will be coming back!'

As others have already gushed about Kelly and his magical ranch, I am about to add yet another glowing review to the collection.

We booked our stay at the End of the Road Ranch to stay over Christmas. A beloved member of our family had passed away earlier in the year and this was going to be a tough one, so we thought a change of scenery might keep us from focusing on our loss. No such luck. Our lost love one was a craftsman of wood and a storyteller, and as Kelly (the owner) told his amazing life stories and shared all of the intricate details of every building on his ranch, we were more aware of how much our beloved would have enjoyed being there with us.

This place truly is beyond words and Kelly is a fascinating person who is kind enough to take the time to talk about the ranch's history, his painstaking care in the ranch's creation and interesting details of his career.

In the main house, there is literally everything you need to cook anything. Kelly chuckled a bit when we brought our own cast iron skillet and crock pot since he had more than enough cooking gear already. There is no phone service (which is great if you want a real get away) and some wifi (though it was not always reliable)- again no problem, if your goal is to unplug and unwind.

We rented the whole ranch and enjoyed having our family of 4 in the main house. My husband and I enjoyed the beautiful view from the large, comfortable bedroom upstairs. Our two boys slept in the tv room downstairs (one on the couch and one on the single bed. They were both comfortable and enjoyed the space. My mom had the privilege of staying in the water house. She was happy to be surrounded by the lush foliage and enjoyed the powerful shower and soaking in the deep tub. My brother and his fiancee stayed in the bunkhouse. They loved having their own kitchen and clawfoot tub and we joked that they could have brought 4 of their closest friends since there was enough sleeping space for that many people (hence the name "bunk house"). We took advantage of the wood heated sauna and the wonderful hiking trails along the river and into the national park.

If you want a one of a kind lodging experience and are fortunate enough to rent this ranch, you will not regret it.

Quiet Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

We needed to get away from the city and settled upon this mountain hideaway for our last minute long weekend trip. While some VRBO property owners are tough to coordinate with on short notice, John was accommodating and flexible from the first phone call and all the way through the weekend.

He greeted us at the entrance to his property which is nestled up in a sunny mountain valley, we were fortunate enough to have bluebird skies in the dead of winter all weekend. He gave us a great tour of the main house, bath house and sauna cabin and also described to us the history of the house and land itself. It was so cool to know the colorful background of our temporary home away from home and made it very clear how much work John had put into building and maintaining it over the years.

I felt very at home the minute I arrived, and more importantly my 100 lb chocolate lab clearly did too. This place is a dog's dream. I'm not sure if he was happier splashing in the river that runs alongside the house, chasing the wild turkeys in the fields, or curled up in front of the fireplace at bed time, but he definitely enjoyed himself even more than I did.

We had the perfect weekend tucked away from the hustle of the city. John, thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality, stories, and life advice, we will most certainly visit again in the future.

The Very Best!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had the privilege of staying at the ranch during snow melt this past May. It was our first VRBO stay and all others will be judged by this experience. The ranch is beautiful, inside and out. John is the perfect host. There to answer questions and visit but also gives you your privacy. We so enjoyed our walk to the bridge, our meals prepared at home, baths in the Beautiful bath house, sleeping to the sound of the rushing creek, naps in the yard, beautiful flowers (Thank You John), I could go on and on. It was the perfect location away from the world to recharge and spend time together, just the two of us. Do yourself a favor and go as soon as you can. You will not be disappointed. Debbie & Darrell

WOW!!!!!! What an amazing time we had at The End of The Road Ranch. Everywhere you look is unbelievable to the smallest detail. My only regret is that we could not have stayed longer and that the dream did not have to end. Thank you John for sharing such a special place with us.

The most remarkable vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

The ranch is everything we wanted in a vacation and much more. John Kelly cares for his ranch with such passion and devotion and it shows everywhere. The inside quarters are filled with his many mementos and photographs which provide a cozy atmosphere and the outside is beautiful and breathtaking. He was kind enough to bring his dogs over one afternoon and what a treat! My son and husband had their bikes shipped and he was extremely helpful. He knows the area like the back of his hand and is so willing to share his knowledge. We miss the place already and can't wait to return next year.

What a joy it was to be invited to stay at Kelly's Ranch. I loved his composting, passion for his ranch/horses and how important it was to him that we were cared for. While I brought in tow, 3 grown children with spouses and 5 children (13-2), Kelly never batted an eye. I often sought him out just because he was so like me...A type personality all the way. He works hard to keep his ranch in such beautiful condition and I hope he always knows how much we appreciated his insight in how to build a fire:). I'm over 60 and have NEVER had such a relaxing, calming, family filled vacation where all of my family just played games and enjoyed each other... Electronics were rarely seen and not missed. While I agree with all the other reviews in how wonderful all the cabins are, it is the total ambiance of the ranch and Kelly that helps one to know that to visit such a memorable place is rare and Kelly is a rare person who allows us to share his treasures. We have all made plans to return next year as everyone went away a better person and much calmer. I know for me that the ranch helped me realize that one can attain genuine relaxation by just sitting in an Adirondack chair and enjoying life around you. I stayed in the sauna cabin with no electricity or running water and how fun that was. I was close to the river, could watch the sky filled with stars at night and had a nice jaunt up the hill in the morning to get the blood pumping. Even two weeks later, I'm still smiling when thinking about our family retreat. Thank you with all my heart Kelly!
