About the Property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps four (Queen size bed plus fold-out for kid

Included with the cottage are two surf boards and two boogie boards and one bicycle. These are 'soft-top' long boards (excellent for beginners and kids - they have soft foamy decks and sides). Both have leashes and are ready to go. You also have two hammocks on the patio, plus a patio table with four chairs. There is a double bed available on request for kids if needed.

Many people write and ask if certain dates are open and what the rent is for those dates. If you want to know if the cottage is available on particular dates, scroll to the bottom of this web page for a calendar that shows you the dates that are open. You can also use the 'Detailed Price' link on the right (scroll upward until you see the photo at the top and look below the big yellow button) to get a quote for the rent for your dates. Once you've decided on your dates, the 'Book It' yellow button on the right will enable you to input your credit card to book the cottage. I will get a message that you've asked to book the cottage, and I'll contact you as soon as I get the message.

Another important thing to know is that electricity is expensive. There's a $12/day extra fee for A/C, which you don't need. You can wait to decide once you get there.

So, here's more about the cottage and Nosara. Welcome to Hawaii as it was in 1940, but with high speed 'premium' DSL WiFi. You are only 2 hours from the Liberia airport, and you can use a rental car, which you can pick up at the airport and drop in Nosara or we can send a van. This is a rustic surf town with dirt roads, friendly people, and lots of yoga and surfing going on. Your cottage is a 10 minute walk from the main surf beach, a five minute walk to the Yoga Institute, a two minute walk to the Spanish Language Institute, and "downtown." You also can use my two 9 food soft-top surfboards and boogie boards (bring flippers if you want to have fun on the boogie boards). You are so close to downtown that, within a couple minutes walk, there is an ice cream shop, a mini-mart, a clinic, clothing stores, real estate offices, a bank, ATV and bike rentals, a lot of cafes and restaurants, and two surf shops. In the cottage, you have wireless high speed DSL internet, 24 hour on-call maintenence, local guides/maps, weekly housekeeping (daily housekeeping is optional), optional air conditioning (rarely needed), beach towels, ceiling fans, house linens are provided, a safe (will hold wallets, passports, 3 laptops), a TV connected to a DVD player for movies and music, security (ornate ironwork on doors and windows), a blender, a device to make juice out of citrus fruit, a coffeemaker, a pressure cooker, a microwave, a refrigerator, a stove, a toaster, a rice cooker, optional personal laundry at $10 per load, a covered porch with two hammocks, off-road parking, outside shower, a large patio, patio furniture, and a beautiful yard. You are located above one of Nosara's many nature preserves and you will see a lot of wildlife. During the day the howler and spider monkeys play in the trees, pizotes wander through the yard (they love peanut butter), and tropical birds and butterflies fill the air around you. I walk to the beach twice a day to surf, and usually are not disappointed by what I find. Dawn and sunset surfing are the best if tides and winds are right. The locals are outstanding surfers, but they make room for visitors. In fact, I really can't say enough about the friendly, hospitable people of Nosara. They especially warm up to you when you try your Spanish on them. This is not just a rental house for income - I live here part of the year myself, and I have fixed it up to be cozy and complete. I don't scrimp on any of the amenities, because I like to fix things up nicely for myself as well. I bought this cottage after I had come to Nosara for years to surf and enjoy the food, scenery, monkeys, and local population. With the purchase of the cottage, I inherited a wonderful wife/husband team of managers, who are on the spot when anything needs attending to. They manage the gardens, the housekeeping, the laundry, the renter's needs, and renter scheduling.

Keywords: High speed DSL WiFi, surfing, surf boards, bungalow, casita, private, monkeys visit, pizotes visit, A/C, fans, shopping, night life, safe for valuables (can fit 3 laptops, wallets, purses), secure (attractive ironwork is standard for Nosara), housekeeping service, laundry service, hammocks, off-road parking, covered and lighted patio, yoga institute nearby, yoga mat for your use, fishing, wildlife, nature preserve, waterfalls, zipline, beach, hiking

  • Since moving here, we've discovered lots of information on where to buy groceries, where to shop, where to get hard-to-find things, how to get about (we mostly walk, take the local bus or hitch-hike), where to get car rentals, where the best and cheapest meals can be found, and where the best surfing spots are. We have documented all this in a binder you will find when you arrive. You will probably meet Marleen, the cat that adopted us when we moved here. Marleen's original owner passed away five years ago, and she's made a living by wandering from place to place and begging meals. She must like our cat food, because she hasn't budged from our refrigerator top since we first let her in. We leave cat food under the sink for her in case you're also a sucker for cute pussy cats. If we've run out of cat food , you can find it at the local mini-market down the path....moreless

Traveling to Nosara.

1. The best way to come to Nosara from Liberia Airport with a rental car:

We don't advise driving during nighttime when you are not familiar with the roads. We can arrange transport from the airport to Nosara. The trip takes 2-2.5 hours. If you want to rent a car, we advise you rent a GPS from the rental car company. With the GPS, you can at least enter "Nosara" or "Playa Guiones". Ask the car rental agent, and he will help you with the GPS. Once you are at the beach, the nearest location to the cottage that is easy to find is Cafe de Paris. If you don't use a GPS, here's what to do: Go south on Highway 21 to Nicoya. Then take Highway 150 south toward Samara. About 5 kms before Samara, you will see, on your left, National Rent a Car and Surfing Nosara Real Estate signs. Slow down. Then you will see a gas station and next a hardware store on your left. Across from the hardware store, to your right, is the partially paved dirt road to Nosara. If you get to Samara, you went too far. Once on the road to Nosara, you will pass Playa Garza. After Playa Garza, you will see a yoga institute on the left, and you will be coming into the beach area. Once you pass the yoga institute, look for a small sign on your left hand saying Casa Sombra. Turn in and go down a short hill. Your cottage is the center cottage. Virginie will be expecting you, but she needs to know the time and date of your arrival. If you have a phone, please give Virginie a call from Garza so she can meet at the house. If not, stop at Organico near the cottage. Organico is a mini market located on the main road on your right hand about 200m past the sign Casa Sombra, just before Coconut Harry's Surfshop. Organico will let you use their phone. Her cell is (+506) 8318.7840.

2. The best way to come to Nosara from San Jose with a rental car:

We can arrange transport from San Jose to Nosara. If you drive, we don't advise driving at night if you are not familiar with the roads. If you want to drive, we advise renting a GPS from the rental car agency. The trip takes 4 to 6 hours. From San Jose, take Route 27, a toll way, in the direction of Puntarenas. From Puntarenas follow Liberia-Las Canas, you will have left the Route 27 and are now on Panamerican or Route 1, lots of traffic, one lane, lots of curves, drive will follow this road for about 40 km (1 hour). At Restaurant LAS TRES HERMANAS (has lots of advertising along the road) Grill restaurant with giant bull statue and a gas station, turn left towards NICOYA. You will cross the Peninsula at the Puente de la Amistad. There are amazing views here. At low tide you can see a bunch of big crocs sunbathing. This is a nice stop. Continue on that road, at a T crossroads, Go right. When you get to Nicoya, turn left (at Burger King). Go aross town straight ahead. Follow SAMARA. About 5 kms before Samara, you will see, on your left National Rent a Car and Surfing Nosara Real Estate signs. Slow down. You will see a gas station and a hardware store on the left. Across from the hardware store, to your right, is the partially paved dirt road to Nosara. Follow that dirt road for about 25 kms. Don't follow Google, it will send you to Samara first then through another dirt road where you will have to cross a river and will most probably get stuck in with your car, unless you want some adventure. We usually meet at the Organico Market, just before Coconut Harry's surf shop and National Rent A Car, and call us from there. Organico will let you use their phone. Our cell phone is 8318 7840 or 8309 8194 and we would appreciate a call if you are delayed in any ways.

Manager info

Year Purchased: 2011

About: I'm 68 and retired from fire fighting. I've been a surfer all my life, and spent my retirement savings on this place down in Costa Rica. To support my aquatic habits, I run three pet-friendly vacation rentals in San Antonio, Texas. I live with my two Vizslas, Jack and Jill, in a cottage behind one of my rentals. This 400 square foot bachelor/dog pad is the ultimate down-sizing. If we can't cram it into our little cottages in Nosara and San Antonio, we don't need it. Three of my places are solar-powered, by the way.

Why Guanacaste, Costa Rica:
I chose to split my time between Costa Rica and San Antonio because they bring together the yin and the yang of my life. I love splitting my time between San Antonio Mexican restaurants, Starbucks, and USA Today, on the one hand, and hanging out in the lineup off the big palm tree in Nosara on the other hand. My dogs feel that I need to find a girlfriend (maybe someone that can cook their favorite meals?), but I keep telling them that finding someone that will put up with us is going to be a challenge!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
You can hear the sound of the surf from my patio. Watching the surf cam (google Nosara Surf Live Webcam) and listening to the volume of the waves tips us off if it's time to wax up. This property sits just east of a large national reserve, so the patio looks out onto jungle that will be there for generations to come. Our neighbors are renters, so the faces change, people come and go, and I meet many interesting people who are all here for the same reasons I'm here - surfing and yoga. My favorite things to do here include going to the health food store and buying gluten-free brownies, walking around on the many dirt roads in the area, and going down to the beach for the daily sunset party. A lot of the locals show up and just mingle while watching the sunset, and, sometimes, people stay and light a bonfire. There's a nice, several hour, walk up the beach all the way to Ostional, the turtle beach (or you can drive).
