Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This beach front property is located on Admiral's Cove on Admiralty Bay, the entrance to Puget Sound. From the property you have spectacular views of The Olympic Mountains, ship and ferry traffic in and out of Puget Sound. You can see spectacular sun rises and sun sets and lots of wildlife, including eagles, jumping salmon, seals, an occasional whale, rabbits and a multitude of birds. And, all of this can be seen from the front room, dining room, and master bedroom, as well as the spacious decks and board walk down to the water. Feel free to catch salmon from the front yard and put them on the Bar-B for dinner. This location is extremely quiet and peaceful with few neighbors...wetlands on one side and the ocean on the other. The road is private and is wonderful for long walks along the water. The beach is also private and there is an outdoor swimming pool within walking distance of the house. The house itself is furnished with overstuffed sofas, wide-screen TV and washer and dryer. There's also a small TV in one of the bedrooms...perfect for the kids! Speaking of kids, they love collecting rocks and shells, and especially playing in the the rowboat in the front yard.

The Beach House

  • 5 of 5

That's what we call this charming getaway on Admiral's Cove - The Beach House. We stayed there for 10 days surrounding Thanksgiving in 2015, again in December 2015 while exploring options on the island, and for the month of January 2016. The house is very comfortable and has everything you need to live there. There are 3 bedrooms which accommodated us all when children and grandchildren came for a few days. While sitting in the living room or dining room you can watch the changing weather and seagulls, or freighters and naval aircraft carriers heading to ports beyond. The house is very close to the Keystone ferry which takes you to Port Townsend ( delightful day trip). It's also a great place to walk with parks at both ends of the street (one with a pool and playground equipment and the other with great nature scenes and a spot where you can fish from the shore). I'm giving it 5 stars because this home provides a great place to NOT be busy, but also close enough to explore the beautiful island. It is somewhat dated and not perfect...but that's like most of us, right? I hope you go and make wonderful memories!

Fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

What a great place to be during the summer. I use to own a home down the street several years ago and had been wanting to go back to Whidbey Island for a visit as I remembered how nice it is this time of the year. I met up with my son and my brother from Kansas who had never been in the area. We all had a great time and enjoyed spending time at your home. We will be back! Mahalo

Run down and musty smelling

  • 2 of 5

I booked this rental for out of country family, and was very disappointed when we arrived. I don't like giving bad reviews, but I had I read an honest review like this, I wouldn't have rented this house. My 1st impression was, it was run down, outside looks like it could use a few coats of paint and some overall maintenance. When you step inside you are assaulted with this awful musty smell. We opened the doors to get some fresh air in, but then there were lots of flies....

Overall, the view is great, but the house is not. The beach is a bit tricky to get to with all the driftwood piled up next to and in front of, the walkway. No lounge chairs to sit outside and enjoy the view. The home's electrical and cleanliness is also in need of some attention. Half of the outlets in the living room don't work.

Not a kitchen I would want to cook in either. There is a reason there are no pictures of the kitchen. It is very small and carpeted. The appliances are old and we didn't want to use them. The BBQ outside was also dirty, so we ended up eating out all 3 days.

I give this rental 2 stars because of the view.

Honestly, I don't think this home should be rented out until some maintenance (electrical and professional cleaning) has been done.

Owner's Response: I am shocked to get this review, especially in light of the fact that we have received two 5 star reviews in the last month. I feel it is a bit like Trump calling the White House "a dump." Not that the beach house is the White House, but it is certainly not a dump either. I would like to address some of the issues: The outside of the building is scheduled to be painted next week (August). There is a very small window of opportunity to do outside painting in the Pacific Northwest, especially next to the salt water. It must be done in the middle of summer so that the wood surfaces have a chance to dry out completely. It is illegal to remove driftwood from the beaches...it is the natural bulkhead and protection from high rise waters. I used to have very nice comfy lounge chairs on the decks, but in very short time they were full of cigarette burns. I have had to result to nice teak furniture. I think the previous renters blew the electrical breakers as the electrical system is fine. I always tell my renters if there are any problems to call me, that I am only a few minutes away. I didn't hear from these folks. The kitchen is indeed small, but very handy and well stocked, as you can read in other reviews. The refrigerator was replaced about 3 years ago, only to have one of the shelves broken that very year. The stove is not new but works perfectly. The washer and dryer and dishwasher are fairly new and all work fine. The screen doors work well to keep the flies out. The general cleanliness of the house is always good, as you can note from other reviews. I must admit that some permanent stains recently appeared around the dining room table that the professionals cannot remove, but they are hardly bad enough to replace the carpeting. The beach is a private beach and very rocky, so most people are content to enjoy the view from the decks. The plus side is that you don't have people walking across your front yard, so the property is very peaceful and private. I'm not sure what to think about the "musty smell." We will look into that possibility. I am in my seventies, so I employ a professional cleaning company to do all the cleaning in between renters and they do an exceptional job. We work hard to make your stay enjoyable and comfortable. This is not the tropics, so there are only 3 months of rental time for beach properties, and I have yet to make a profit. I love the joyful feedback, but this review makes me think of selling...

Amazing place, amazing time!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights and we had a blast! Very comfy property with such a beautiful beach! House is cozy and enough space to roam about. We caught lots of red rock crab out in front of the property with a castable crab hawk, a blast! No salmon this time but we had plenty of fun with the crabbies! Saw pod of porpoises every morning at high tide feeding. Eagles everywhere! We will surely be back! Recommended for anyone wanting a great getaway and a nice cozy cabin with a great close beach! Extremely private for us no neighbors!

Cozy with fantastic view, but yowza, the drawbacks!

  • 3 of 5

The beach house had very comfortable king beds in both bedrooms and twins in the 3rd bedroom. Very cozy. It was well stocked with a variety of funky dishes typically found in beach houses. The espresso machine was a nice touch! The manager was very responsive in booking and the reservation process was simple. The deck was lovely and the side area was perfect when the wind picked up as it provided a great wind shelter. The wifi was great and it was nice to have cable. Note that there was only a VCR with no selection of VHS tapes, so bring your own or go to the thrift store to pick up some old movies.

There were a few rather significant drawbacks that really impacted our time there. The beach in front of the cabin was steep and rocky. No sand. The rocks were like the ones in the yard as shown in the picture. Round rocks that moved around when you walked on them. I couldn't do it without turning my ankles so we did not get to roll into the sand when we wanted to hang by the water (which is the main reason we booked the beach house instead of something on a hill). The nearby public beach was also rocky. To access a sandy beach, we had to walk down the road about 1/4 mile to the community center. That was the second shortcoming. The beach house does not include access to the community center -- they are not part of Admiralty Cove. The nice lady there let us pay for a limited number of visits and saved the day(s)! So we paid $20 for our kids to swim two days and for us to access the sandy beach. The third shortcoming was the jets. Other reviewers had mentioned it and I should have been warned. I thought that it surely couldn't be *that* loud or go on for *that* long. I was wrong. Five hours a day of 2-3 jets performing touch and goes right over the hill, one after another, constantly. Literally circling the beach house each time. You could see the pilots clear as day. It was deafening and we had to go indoors to avoid damaging our hearing. They ran from 4-6 pm, and then from 8-11 pm. Each day. Basically the entire evening, right when we wanted to enjoy our time at the house after visiting Coupeville and Langley during the day. I had to sleep with ear plugs in.

So overall, it was a lovely little beach house with spectacular views and a great price but the drawbacks were very significant.

Needed a get way for R & R

  • 3 of 5

House was clean, however wall to wall carpet in bathrooms is not very sanitary and should be removed. We put hand towels on the floor in front of he toilets. As stated in other reviews house could use some updating. A 2012 review mentioned the screen door on the slider was broken. There is NO screen on the sliding door now and there are NO screens on the bedroom windows. It was pretty warm weather for this area (80 plus) so we had to open the windows anyway to cool the house, and had to set a chair sideways to block the opening so we could open the slider and keep our dog from getting out. This resulted in flies getting inside. I happen to hate flies so that was not pleasant. Fun to watch the ships but you must have binoculars to see them. As for the fighter jets. WOW. It only happened one late afternoon for about 2 1/4 hours. A plane about every 3 minutes. Loud, oh yes when you are out side and they go right over the house, very low to land at Whidbey. They were doing "touch and go". But darn what a wonderful sight. It was like our own private airshow, not to mention how proud we were to see part of our wonderful defense system in practice!!! We went inside to eat and the noise was about 50% less and we could still watch from the dining table. View is great. Too hard to get down from the boardwalk to the beach for older folks and people with stability issues. A handrail would help a bit. Also an umbrella for the deck should be provided as well as a few better quality lounge chairs to relax on other then the wood chairs that go with the wood patio table. The two folding chairs there were flimsy at best. Jan is nice and easy to work with. We would like to go back but cannot do so unless these items are addressed. Disappointing there is no outside fire pit for evening bonfires, typical for beach properties. Come prepared as the only services are in Coupeville and you cannot walk there.

Owner's Response: I would like to thank you for your review on my beach house. I appreciate your time in doing so. We work hard to provide you with a clean and comfortable get-away and to also make improvements. This year, for example, we put in a new wrap-around deck costing over $18,000. Obviously, at this rate improvements cannot be done all at once. As you can imagine, renters can be hard on vacation rentals; i.e., cigarette burns on the overstuffed deck furniture required changing to teak furniture on the decks. And each time someone tries to walk through the screen door, it needs to be replaced. All of the carpets were recently shampooed by professionals, but I will look into your comments to make sure everything is still OK. My goal is to make you happy and to receive those 5 star reviews!!!

Map

The front yard is the best salmon fishing on Whidbey Island...bring you fishing gear! You are 20 minutes away from the spectacular Desception Pass and Deception Pass State Park, a must see! You are inside the only National Historic Reserve in the U.S. called Ebey's Landing National Reserve. This means the sights everywhere you look are incredibly beautiful...bring your camera.
