In this remote area of West Virginia you are surrounded by amazing scenery and rivers. The Tygart River is just a short drive from the cabin and is known for its beautiful whitewater and swimming. There is Moats Falls which is a 16’ waterfall cascading over the rocks. We can arrange with advance notice private kayaking instruction or rafting trips for any type of group, the gentle float or the class V excitement there is something for everyone. There is a flat water section of river from Philippi to the town of Arden. From Arden to the Teter Creek bridge it becomes Class IV whitewater and you can paddle over the 16’ waterfall if the water level is right! There is also creekin’ available on Teter & Laurel Creek just moments from the house.
The Tygart Lake State Park is another nearby attraction where boats and all types of lake recreation activities are available. You can rent a pontoon boat for the day and enjoy this scenic lake. Another local favorite is Audra State Park where the Middle Fork of the Tygart river flows though tight channels and larger boulders, amazing fishing, hiking and swimming await you at this park.
The famous Blackwater falls is an attraction about an hour from the house. This cascading waterfall drops 65 feet! This area is also home to some of the most famous and amazing Mountain Biking in the state of West Virginia. Stop in the local bike shop, Blackwater Bikes to find out about the trails but you can spend hours riding and even visit an area called “A Ride to the Moon” where you can challenge yourself on some of the most technical riding in the east on the Moon Rocks. This is not for novice riders! However, there are also some great easy trails as well; check out the bike path in Parsons or the Allegheny Trail which goes for miles a nice paved trail for road riders.
The cabin is about 45 minutes from Clarksburg, 2 hours from Charleston and about 1 1/2 hours from Morgantown. If you are flying in either of these airports would work for you. Our driveway is a bit steep and rocky and an SUV is not necessary but recommended. Low clearance cars are not ideal for this driveway.

We bought the land for this home in 2000 after our eldest son was born and in 2005 we built the log home. West Virginia is a place we had often visited and with close friends nearby we knew we needed our own place to stay. We've enjoyed the home and all the activities that the area has to offer teaching our two boys to paddle inflatable kayaks and biking. However, now they are at the age where school activities are preventing us from spending as many weekends in WV, we have decided we'd like to share our home with others. We live in Cincinnati Ohio and our family has two boys ages 10 & 12 as well as our two dogs. We enjoy paddling, biking, hiking and caving on a regular basis. In the winter we like to snowboard at Timberline which is about 1 1/2 hours from the cabin. We also enjoy traveling around the world to all kinds of different and interesting places.
Sara Kaufman purchased this house in 2005
This is a remote location but that's what makes it so attractive. We had close friends in this area and had been visiting them for years. Once everyone had children (they had twins!) We knew we needed our own home. So we purchased the land and worked to build our home. You will see many of the beautiful hand crafted woodworking finishing touches which were done by Fred. He has a passion for woodworking and building and you can see these in the handcrafted railings. This area is pristine and quiet and this location is ideal for outdoor activities. Kayaking is the primary activity which drew us to this area.
Our property is quite unique, there are very few vacation rentals in this area. You are in your own wilderness here on top of 40 acres with privacy and seclusion unlike anywhere else. The Tygart River is a short distance and a bit of undiscovered paradise. We can even arrange private kayaking lessons or a rafting trip for your group with a professional local guide. Our outdoor fire pit is always a fine place to create some amazing memories.
The cabin sits on top of a hill in the middle of nothing except beautiful scenery and the sounds of nature! It's much nicer and larger than the pictures. The surrounding area and city of Phillippi is scenic, historic and the people are friendly.
Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!
We have stayed here before and absolutely love the cabin. Its spacious, clean and with a spectacular view and privacy. If you want space and serenity this is your cabin. The driveway is steep. But I love the trip up the mountain. Plenty to do around there, civil war mansion. Tygart River to mention a few.
Enjoyed staying here with my family, the home is in terrific condition and was very cozy. Highlights include the outdoor seating areas and the nearby Tygart River. Would go back.
This cabin exemplifies the state motto of WV....Almost Heaven. The cabin is clean and very well equipped. It accommodated our group of 8 easily and comfortably. The firepit was a hit with the kids, along with the games, movies, and ping pong table. Being so isolated was just what we needed to appreciate and enjoy the surrounding nature, and each other. And if you're there long enough and up for a beautiful car ride, there are lots of amazing places to visit within a couple of hours - particularly Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, and Dolly Sods. Communication with the owner was always quick, efficient, and friendly. Highly recommend for those looking for a true getaway!
Our family enjoyed our stay at this beautiful cabin immensely! We would recommend this cabin to anyone and everyone! From the comfortable beds, to the fire pit, to the ping pong table we didn't want to leave!
Got together with some college classmates here for a reunion weekend, along with more classmates staying at another rental home nearby. The cabin is absolutely awesome. The pictures don't do justice to the house or the woodland setting. Great for campfires, hiking, off roading or just chilling. The home is off the "grid" but so worth it. Can't recommend highly enough!
Private Kayaking instruction and Private Raft Trips nearby can be arranged for an additional cost
