Unspoiled by tourism, this section of the Tygart River is truly an undiscovered gem nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.

The historic community of Arden, West Virginia, is home to the Tygart River Guest House. It is off the beaten path and serves as a convenient hub with direct access to the river – yet only a 6 mile from the nearest town where you can find restaurants, groceries, gas, pharmacy, hospital and more. The Arden Grade Road was once a main route through the mountains on the B&O railway during the early 1900’s and follows along the river providing spectacular views! It’s also a great place for casual bike rides with access to mountain trails nearby.

Take in the stars fireside, listen to the rolling sounds of whitewater, and connect with family and friends in a most welcoming and unlikely place.

HOUSE DESCRIPTION - Newly Renovated!

• Front Porch

• Partially Covered Back Deck

• Sleeps 10-12

• 4 Bedrooms

• 3 Full Baths

• Fully furnished

• Close to Philippi/ABU

The Tygart River Guest House offers a spacious “old timey” front porch, complete with swing, rocking chair and plenty of easy lounging wicker furniture – great for lazy days on the river. High ceilings will greet you through the front entrance where original bead board walls whisper stories from the distant past and restored yellow pine floors pave the way to a more contemporary present. We have brought together period elements from the coal mining era joining them with contemporary colors and modern amenities. Remnant artifacts salvaged from the house during its recent renovations are on display accompanied by vintage black and white photos of the era.

The ground floor offers two bedrooms. The one directly to your left upon entering, features a classic full size wrought iron bed dressed in quilts with two lamps and nightstands, armoire and river views. The room to your right boasts a sunny disposition arrayed in hues of red and green. Its companions are an ornate metal queen size bed, ceiling fan, closet and comfortable chairs. Continue down the hall into the open Dining Room which is centrally located and acts as a hub for the whole household to gather between the Living Room and Kitchen. For the musically inclined, there is upright piano dating back to the early 1940’s and a large country table with pullout extensions to comfortably seat 10 people. Additional seating can be found at the breakfast bar.

The Kitchen is equipped with microwave, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, gas cook stove, antique country sink and drain board and ceiling fan/light. Glass sliding doors separate the kitchen from a private back deck with patio set and a private backyard view.

You’ll be right at home in the spacious Living Room with sloped ceiling and hardwood floors, leather couch, and loveseat. An oak armoire entertainment center houses a TV and DVD Player. One of the most unique features of this home is the large antique oak pocket doors at your disposal to close off the Living Room if more privacy is needed. There is a convenient full bathroom just off the Living Room with a shower and beautiful slate tile floors. On the opposite side of the house is a Laundry Room with washer and dryer, clean tile floors and laundry table. This room leads to another full bathroom with full size tiled shower.

Upstairs, there is a full bathroom with tile floors and windows on all sides giving it a bright airy feel with an antique claw foot bathtub for soothing relaxation. Exiting the bathroom, there is a bedroom on your left complete with a full size bed, roomy closets, TV and DVD player, full river-facing windows and carpeted floors. There is a gorgeous view of the river from the hallway as well, where you can perch for a look from above. Finally, we arrive at the bunk bed room to the right of the hallway. It also has a view of the river, full carpeting and two sturdy bunk beds to comfortably sleep four people. One bunk bed features staircase access to the upper bunk for easy access.

About Sherry Hubbard

We originally moved here for the whitewater and we're still here because of the magnetism of the mountains, rivers and streams. West Virginia is our mountain getaway everyday!

Why Sherry Hubbard chose West Virginia

Parts of the guest house date back to the early 1900's during the coal mining era when tracks of the B & O Railroad line ran directly through the community of Arden. Since those days, an extensive renovation and many amenities have been added to make a comfortable yet historic guest house. It's a great spot to gather with friends and family since you have the run of the place. It sleeps 10-12 easily and there are plenty of central gathering areas to spend time together.

What makes this house unique

Situated on the river with views from every bedroom and the front porch. It's a lovely out of the way place to catch your breath and enjoy the mountain air. Period elements from the early 1900's are still preserved in the home including original pine floors and beadboard walls along with relics from the coal mining era.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I stayed here over Thanksgiving and loved it! We were concerned about traveling in the snow but all the roads were cleared and there were no big mountain climbs to deal with - a big plus for our vehicle which doesn't have much clearance. The river view is just beautiful! The snow looks so pretty on the river rocks with water flowing all around it. I loved being able to snuggle up to read a book in a cozy chair and look out on such a pretty wintry scene.

Clean and peaceful!!

  • 5 of 5

We decided to take our dogs on vacation fora change. They loved running around the area. The house was much bigger than we thought or needed but is was a very nice house and the scenery was beautiful and tranquil. I would recommend this property to friends and hope to go back again in summer to enjoy some rafting. Thank you Sherry.

Great Get Away

  • 5 of 5

My family found this house on VRBO and are soo happy we did. It is quiet location that really encouraged our family to take a step back from our busy schedules and our electronic dependencies and enjoy the outdoors.

The kids loved playing on the rock at the river and making smores.

The house was great. Used the Grill and table outside for dinner almost everynight. Kitchen was fully furnished.

Although if you are there check out the cafe that is on the side of the road on the way back to 250/119 great food.

Relaxing on the River

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a quiet place to relax on the water in August before the fall chaos with school...the Tygart River guest house was the perfect spot! Just as described on the site, maybe even better. We only had 4 with us, but the home could easily accommodate many more, especially with the 3 full baths. The river was gorgeous and we loved just taking a book and sitting out on the rocks. My favorite spot was the front porch in the early morning sipping coffee and watching the sweet neighborhood dogs roam around looking for their friends. The house had everything we needed - we especially appreciated the bed, kitchen and bath linens being furnished and in place on arrival. Nice covered deck out back and table with a ceiling fan for eating outside. We really enjoyed our visit, wish it weren't so far away! Owners are next door and ready to help if you should need anything. Had great Dish service for TV, we were there during the Olympics and enjoyed watching. As described on the site - wifi is available, but very slow and we had a really difficult time with cell service (Verizon, but we're having increasing issues with them even at home these days) - but owners next door have a landline for emergencies and are gracious with assistance. Would be difficult if you are trying to do some online business - but we enjoyed disconnecting from all that for the week. Would recommend leaving property owner's numbers with folks back home if they needed to reach you in an emergency... Beautiful pergola out front with benches overlooking the river also. The river water was crystal clear. Very quiet, exactly what we were looking for that week, really enjoyed out visit! Thank you Hubbard family!

Great Place to Unwind

  • 5 of 5

This is two years in a row that we vacationed at the Tygart River Guest House. A great place to unwind and let the tension from the City just drift away. You will not be bothered by the constant din of the phone ringing, no phone service until you go to nearby cities of Phillippi, or Grafton. The River is only 70 feet from your door, and the sound of the water rushing buy is quite soothing.

The property owners are close by if something isn't working, and they are very responsive to your needs. Sherry and Josh are great people who have a wonderful spot where families can be together and enjoy nature and the beauty of West Virginia!

Great time with family and Friends

  • 4 of 5

Our stay was great, once we found the location we enjoyed our stay... Must print directions, or use a good map. No satelite reception, or cell services..So DONT TRY TO USE YOUR CELL FOR NAVIGATION....Other then that our vacation was awesome. Peaceful, serene, beautiful scenery, and close to water.. We will go back for sure. Sherry was super nice and there are a few towns located not to far for easy access to store and gas station.. The house is on a dirt road, not alot of traffic.. And if you do not want to be bothered this is the place for you. House was clean and very nice inside.. cant wait to return...

Owner's Response: So glad you had a great time and that you plan to come back! Yes, cell reception is spotty in the mountains. I use a dashboard GPS when I go to mountainous areas and they work great. So that is a good option. We also have a Google business listing where you can pinpoint directions and print them out as a backup. And you can always call me and I route you in!

Notes:
Cell phone reception is in and out although usually good in the hallway upstairs. Text messages come through. Emergency calls can be made next door if needed via land line. WiFi is available but slow due to satellite data restrictions. Please enjoy the upright piano. Though it is quite out of tune, it is an older piece adding character to the house and we simply ask that adults and children be mindful that they play gently. Note: Pets are considered. Please notify us if you would like to bring any with you for your stay. If they are approved we charge $35/pet but it does require prior approval.
