HOUSE DESCRIPTION - Newly Renovated!

• Front Porch

• Partially Covered Back Deck

• Sleeps 10-12

• 4 Bedrooms

• 3 Full Baths

• Fully furnished

• Close to Philippi/ABU

The Tygart River Guest House offers a spacious “old timey” front porch, complete with swing, rocking chair and plenty of easy lounging wicker furniture – great for lazy days on the river. High ceilings will greet you through the front entrance where original bead board walls whisper stories from the distant past and restored yellow pine floors pave the way to a more contemporary present. We have brought together period elements from the coal mining era joining them with contemporary colors and modern amenities. Remnant artifacts salvaged from the house during its recent renovations are on display accompanied by vintage black and white photos of the era.

The ground floor offers two bedrooms. The one directly to your left upon entering, features a classic full size wrought iron bed dressed in quilts with two lamps and nightstands, armoire and river views. The room to your right boasts a sunny disposition arrayed in hues of red and green. Its companions are an ornate metal queen size bed, ceiling fan, closet and comfortable chairs. Continue down the hall into the open Dining Room which is centrally located and acts as a hub for the whole household to gather between the Living Room and Kitchen. For the musically inclined, there is upright piano dating back to the early 1940’s and a large country table with pullout extensions to comfortably seat 10 people. Additional seating can be found at the breakfast bar.

The Kitchen is equipped with microwave, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, gas cook stove, antique country sink and drain board and ceiling fan/light. Glass sliding doors separate the kitchen from a private back deck with patio set and a private backyard view.

You’ll be right at home in the spacious Living Room with sloped ceiling and hardwood floors, leather couch, and loveseat. An oak armoire entertainment center houses a TV and DVD Player. One of the most unique features of this home is the large antique oak pocket doors at your disposal to close off the Living Room if more privacy is needed. There is a convenient full bathroom just off the Living Room with a shower and beautiful slate tile floors. On the opposite side of the house is a Laundry Room with washer and dryer, clean tile floors and laundry table. This room leads to another full bathroom with full size tiled shower.

Upstairs, there is a full bathroom with tile floors and windows on all sides giving it a bright airy feel with an antique claw foot bathtub for soothing relaxation. Exiting the bathroom, there is a bedroom on your left complete with a full size bed, roomy closets, TV and DVD player, full river-facing windows and carpeted floors. There is a gorgeous view of the river from the hallway as well, where you can perch for a look from above. Finally, we arrive at the bunk bed room to the right of the hallway. It also has a view of the river, full carpeting and two sturdy bunk beds to comfortably sleep four people. One bunk bed features staircase access to the upper bunk for easy access.

Swimming is a popular activity and there are many places to take a dip on hot summer days. Sightseeing is everywhere locally and in nearby parks. Moats Falls is located about 4 miles downstream and is a breathtaking riverwide waterfall. The 16’ vertical drop is easy to access on foot by crossing the natural stone bridge that leads to a house size boulder upstream of the falls. There are many sandy beaches and places to explore along the riverbanks, as well as trails to hike and mountain bike. As avid whitewater guides and kayakers who have lived in the area for more than 35 years, we can arrange for whitewater rafting trips, private kayak clinics, point you in the direction of nearby hiking and mountain biking trails and/or guide you to some prime fishing spots.

• Tygart Lake State Park. The is a nearby park where all types of lake recreation and activities are available. Rent a pontoon for the day or jump on a jet ski.

• Audra State Park. The Middle Fork River flows though tight channels and larger boulders. Amazing kayaking, fishing, hiking and swimming are all available at this park and the views are amazing!

• Blackwater Falls State Park. This popular attraction is about an hour from the Guest House featuring a stunning waterfall dropping 65 feet! This area is also home to some of the best Mountain Biking in the state of West Virginia. Stop in the local bike shop, Blackwater Bikes to find out about the trails and plan to spend hours riding on trails ranging from beginner to expert. The Allegheny Trail offers a rail trail ride that’s great for riders of all types and can be accessed in Parsons.

The house is about 40 minutes from Clarksburg, 1 hour from Morgantown, 2 ½ hours from Pittsburgh, 2 ½ hours from Charleston and about 4 hours from Washington D.C. It’s doable!

About Sherry Hubbard

We originally moved here for the whitewater and we're still here because of the magnetism of the mountains, rivers and streams. West Virginia is our mountain getaway everyday!

Why Sherry Hubbard chose Moatsville

Parts of the guest house date back to the early 1900's during the coal mining era when tracks of the B & O Railroad line ran directly through the community of Arden. Since those days, an extensive renovation and many amenities have been added to make a comfortable yet historic guest house. It's a great spot to gather with friends and family since you have the run of the place. It sleeps 10-12 easily and there are plenty of central gathering areas to spend time together.

What makes this house unique

Situated on the river with views from every bedroom and the front porch. It's a lovely out of the way place to catch your breath and enjoy the mountain air. Period elements from the early 1900's are still preserved in the home including original pine floors and beadboard walls along with relics from the coal mining era.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My husband and I stayed here over Thanksgiving and loved it! We were concerned about traveling in the snow but all the roads were cleared and there were no big mountain climbs to deal with - a big plus for our vehicle which doesn't have much clearance. The river view is just beautiful! The snow looks so pretty on the river rocks with water flowing all around it. I loved being able to snuggle up to read a book in a cozy chair and look out on such a pretty wintry scene.

Cell phone reception is in and out although usually good in the hallway upstairs. Text messages come through. Emergency calls can be made next door if needed via land line. WiFi is available but slow due to satellite data restrictions. Please enjoy the upright piano. Though it is quite out of tune, it is an older piece adding character to the house and we simply ask that adults and children be mindful that they play gently. Note: Pets are considered. Please notify us if you would like to bring any with you for your stay. If they are approved we charge $35/pet but it does require prior approval.

Better than described. Larger than described. Perfect for family gathering!

  • 5 of 5

There are 12 of us. 7 adults and 5 kids (4-7 yrs). It is tough to find a place that fits everyone's needs.

Well -Tygart Lake Guest House was amazing. We rode bikes, we hiked, we visited the waterfall, we swam in the lake as well as the river, we celebrated a birthday, we brought food and there was plenty of space to put it. We had a bonfire, we cooked s'mores, we used the grill - there is inside eating and outside eating areas and tables and chairs - areas in the front and areas in the back to sit, relax or watch the kiddos play.

There are three bathrooms! There is a washer and dryer! There are games in the closet in the living room.

The glorious quiet.

My grand daughter, age 7, wants to buy it - it was perfect for our whole family!

Only one suggestion: Take all you want food wise because it is a long way to get a gallon of milk!

Quiet, beautiful and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at the guest house. Our family loves the area and have family relatively nearby. Great get together point with plenty of space inside and out to visit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Fishing up and down the river and swimming were our favorites. House is very clean and comfortable, had everything we needed. Stores are close enough for groceries or anything else you may need. No phone service but WiFi kept us connected just enough. Kitchen well stocked and the washer and dryer is great considering how much time we spent in the river. Perfect location for unplugging and slowing down. We will be back again as soon as time permits. Thank you for sharing this great house!!

Enjoyable Experience

  • 4 of 5

Our experience was enjoyable. The location enabled us to explore the region, relax and attend the main event, WVU commencement.

The accommodations allowed three families, (5 adults and 2 small children) to have joint and private time. The historical aspect of the home, the sounds of the river, the waterfall down river and the views from the porch were more than we imagined. The kitchen and dining areas were spacious.

The owners were welcoming and attentive. We truly felt part of the community with the friendliness of the people, a true characteristic of WV.

Even though it was fully disclosed, the lack of cell phone reception was a bit of an adjustment for the techies in the group; WIFI was a satisfactory alternative. This is definitely a location for going off the grid. The pastures and river will soothe the soul.

Better than expected

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for us .... and actually bigger than anticipated. The only thing I would change is the description of the kitchen to include a crockpot, coffee maker, and waffle maker so that we could’ve brought items to make waffles and did not bring our own coffee pot & crockpot. Also it would be great if the games and cards would be updated as we were snowed in the entire week.

next day, there were two dogs(black and brown color). We thought it's from owners house, but we were not sure. anyway they are very friendly. Our kids and even I petting them.

We have enjoy the drive around with our trucks. they have fun road to drive. I think it was perfect to ride truck(i have wrangler).

We hope we have little better weather, but we enjoy whole time when we stay. Also when we were back home, we passing by beautiful snow town. It was lucky we got little snow overnight.

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed yourselves! It was a very wet weekend and I think it's great you didn't let that stop you from getting outside to have some fun and explore the mountain roads in your truck. :-) There's always something to get into no matter what the weather! I am continually in awe of seeing the river when it's so big and powerful - a sight to see! Oh, and I agree it is always a great idea to get in before dark when you're unfamiliar with the area. Google maps can bring folks in some very creative ways for sure! Having a printout of directions is handy just in case and you can always call us if you're not sure. Thank you leaving the house in such great condition. Please come and visit again soon!

Tygart River

Arden on the Tygart River is a largely undiscovered treasure in North Central, WV. It has transformed from a booming coal mining town in the early 1900's to a beautiful getaway. If you enjoy escaping to the mountains, scenic whitewater rivers with breathtaking waterfalls, hiking trails, mountain biking or just getting away from it all, this is an ideal place to visit! We enjoy biking on the grade during the week when there is less traffic and we can stop along the way to play at the beaches, boulder, swim and enjoy the beautiful views.
