Fishing with the family

  • 4 of 5

We arrived to find the cottage just as described. The view was very nice from the screened porch. Partially obstructed by trees but still pleasant. The interior felt like home. Nothing extravagant but nicely furnished and comfortable. Our concern was hot summer nights so we brought fans. Surprisingly they weren't necessary because of a nice breeze off the lake most of the time and there were fans available. This also kept the bugs mostly at bay but a walk down the access road was an invitation to attack. The kitchen was well equipped and the dryer was nice since it rained a couple of days and dry rain gear was a plus. The home has some very nice oil paintings, comfortable beds, selection of movies and some reading material. The fishing was as I expected, fair. The lake is a Canadian Shield lake with tannic stained water. There was a walleye stocking in 2010 which produced a lot of 13' to 15'" fish. Fishing reports should always include the level of proficiency of the anglers. I consider us above average in skills and effort. My boat landed 132 walleyes. Most were returned unharmed to the water but we did keep fish to eat on three days. The over 15" part of the catch was maybe 6 to 1 ratio. We mainly fish for walleyes but caught some crappie, smallmouth and northern pike also. Maybe 15 smallies up to 3 1/2 lbs, 6 crappies about 10" and 6 northern pike up to 28". First part of the week minnows worked best but leeches were favored toward the end. We fish live bait so we can't report on artificial bait results. The fish were all caught in a 12' to 22' range. I think this is normal for this time of year. The pleasure craft traffic was not a problem. Bait, gas and most items were readily available within 10 minute drive. The fire pit is on a very level tier one flight down and was nice. Now the negatives; Iron (sulfur) cottage water necessitated the carrying of drinking and cooking water. We new this going in and it wasn't a problem. The 70 steps to the dock was a challenge (My wife and I are 63 and flabby) but having youngsters along made the trip up and back 4 times a day easier, they did the heavy carrying. The dock is nice but the boat lift on the right is for a bigger boat so a fishing boat didn't fit well. We could have docked both 16' fishing boats on one side but it would have been tight. Cleaning our fish was done in the boat on a board and getting rid of the carcasses proved to be difficult. Next year I will have a fish cleaning station.

Best family vacation!!!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was AMAZING! The size was bigger than expected. The beds were so comfortable, and the bedding was so welcoming. We loved the oversized couch that we could always lounge on as a family. The kitchen, bathroom were well stocked. I packed so many things that were not necessary because you already had just everything one would need. I could only think of one improvement and that would be the gas grill. It only worked fairly well on one side and the other was not working. We resorted to to using the very clean stove. We had a hilarious night of a mosquito attack inside the house. Not sure how they got in, but it became a game for all of us. We were pleased that it was only one evening. Just be sure to close the doors tightly. This was truly the best place we have had a family vacation. Thank you for the great memories! God bless.

Great View for a Great Price

  • 5 of 5

The cabin itself was very well kept and equipped with everything needed to make our stay perfect, plenty of room for everyone to have a place to sleep too. It is off of the main road and back in a group of camps, which we were a little concerned about but the neighbors were friendly. Had a great time on the lake, the boat launch is close by and the dock was convenient, huge lake perfect for fishing, tubing, skiing, etc. While we were there, I was riding back on the trails and saw a moose in the woods, which was one of the highlights of the weekend for sure. This is definitely a place I would recommend to anyone looking for a semi-secluded camp with all the amenities of home with a fantastic view and atmosphere within a 35 minute drive to Marquette. Cannot go wrong with this property!

So impressed!

  • 5 of 5

My family planned a last minute trip and this was the only cabin available in Michigamme for the week. We were pleasantly surprised and very impressed by this property! It has a beautiful view of lake Michigamme, is on a quiet road, and is bigger than we expected. We had 8 of us, and not only did we have comfortable beds for all of us, but there was an extra bed, a pull out couch, and an air mattress also available. The kitchen was very well stocked, even had a crock pot! We had a great week lounging in the lake, playing board games, watching movies, sitting around the campfire, and going on walks around the town of Michigamme. I've already recommended this property to several of my friends and my family and I are talking about making this cabin out annual get away! Thanks so much Mark!! :)

First time at this location, won't be the last

  • 5 of 5

This was the umpteenth time we've stayed in Michigamme but the first at this cabin.

It worked very well for the four of us (me, hubby, 16 y.o. son and 8 y.o. son).

My husband loved the boat lift. He spent a lot of time out on the lake fishing (caught quite a few rock bass and two northerns).

We only got to use the fire pit one night but it was fun and functional.

I agree on a previous review that a non-stick fry pan would've been helpful but we worked around it.

We had the power go out during the night and it was restored sometime later the next day (we made a day trip to Ontonagon that day to visit family) but I let Mark know about it and he reassured me that he'd check into it with the electric company. Thankfully our food didn't spoil.

Highlights:

- Boat Lift

- Gorgeous views of the lake and awesome breezes

- Washer and dryer (didn't have problems with staining but brought and used oxi clean with my loads - make sure you have dryer sheets for dyer)

- Comfortable beds

- Plenty of blankets and towels

- Heater

- Well maintained and accurately represented here

- Very nice and helpful owners
