Aloha! E komo mai. Nou ka hale. Welcome to our Big Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our house your home away from home during your next visit.
Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.
Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!
A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.
We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

About Matt or Tara Hubner
We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We come from Texas but currently reside in Colorado. However, our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.

Why Matt or Tara Hubner chose Volcano Village
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
What makes this Cottage unique
One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Jaggar Museum overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.

Loved our Volcano Hideaway!
This was a great spot for anyone exploring the park. It was well set up and provisioned and we really enjoyed our stay. Being so close to the park made for great access to evening and pre dawn volcano viewing.
Quiet and spacious treehouse
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in this house. It was in a nice, remote location with easy access to the National Park and local area. All amenities were provided and we were able to enjoy our stay in the peaceful surroundings. The outdoor area was nice for meals, though rain limited our use. Great stay, many thanks
Fun Fun and more Fun
We relay enjoyed your cabin with us. The wood stove works great on cold nights. We have been in down-town Kona for a month so it doesn't take much. Your cabin was very clean and the parking is great since it rained and rained. Loved to lay in bed and listen to it. Mahalo John & Candi
Hale Huber was like living in a tree house with all the comforts of home. The upstairs cottage put you at eye level with some of the forest birds. Clean and comfortable accommodations. The overhanging eaves and garage made it possible to photograph these birds, even in the rain. I recommend picking up sandwiches at Eagle's Lighthouse Cafe, in Volcano, before going to Volcanoes Nat'l Park. I especially love the cranberry macadamia bread they get from Hilo. We also loved our lunch at Thai Thai Bistro. If you can make reservations, in advance, dinner at the Rim Restaurant in Volcano Lodge was fabulous. All seats have a view of the crater, that can put on quite a show during your dinner. We would gladly return to Hale Huber, when we visit the area, again. A truly delightful home.
Adorable Cottage, Great Location
My husband, father, and I spent 4 nights at Hale Hubner in March of 2018. First of all, Matt and Tara were wonderful to work with - they were super responsive and dealt with any and all questions I had immediately. Our stay was so unique - it was like waking up in a rain forest every morning (the vegetation and birds are spectacular), and you could see the glow from Kilaeua from the deck at night (along with more stars than I have ever seen). We would definitely return.
The cottage has everything you will need, is clean, and comfortable. The location is also fantastic - it takes less than 10 minutes to drive into Volcano National Park.
There are several good choices to eat out around, but I do recommend getting groceries on your way from the airport if you plan to cook as it's a bit of a trek to a real grocery store; there are several good general stores in Volcano if you need staples at any given time though, so it's not a problem at all. We highly recommend the Lava Rock Cafe, especially if you have anyone with dietary restrictions.
Great "home" while visiting Volcano National Park
We loved our stay here - close enough to the park for easy trips back and forth. The kitchen is well stocked with pans/utensils - everything needed to make a meal. The lush landscaping has the feel of being in a rainforest! Great meal at the Thai Thai restaurant nearby and Volcano Garden Arts was a great stop also. Wonderful hiking in the park and it was always nice to return "home" to Hale Hubner!
Enjoy Birdwatching, Stargazing, Lava Viewing, Photography, Cultural Activities, Farmers Markets, Iron Man Triathlon, Merrie Monarch Festival, Live Music, Whale Watching, and more! House is approximately 1.5 miles from Highway 11.
