~ About the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ~
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors views of dramatic volcanic landscapes.
Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been honored as an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.
The National Park Web site provides up-to-date information on volcanic activity, safety, schedule of park lectures/presentations, tours and hiking trails.

Beautiful secret hideaway!
We absolutely loved our stay at Pele's Secret Garden. Being just a few minutes drive to Volcano National Park was great with the advantage of being surrounded by a rainforest. The house is beautifully decorated inside and had every amenity needed. It was perfect for our family of four. In fact, it was so perfect that my family preferred to stay at the house as opposed to exploring more of the park. The wrap around porch was so relaxing to sit on and enjoy the tranquility. Sunday morning market in Volcano Village was fun and if you're looking to grab a fast bite, there is an amazing Thai food truck called "Tuk Tuk" located in the Cooper Centre parking lot.
Thanks Peggy for sharing your beautiful home and your generous hospitality.
Sandy and family :)
Comfortable and cozy
We spent two nights at Pele's Secret Garden and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to stay close to Volcano National Park. It was like staying at a friend's house - everything we needed in a super comfortable setting. It was a bit chilly in the house, but the heaters helped. Tip - There isn't much for groceries in the area, so stock up before you arrive!
This home is absolutely amazing! We were welcomed with fresh fruits, coffee, tea, eggs, English muffins and fully stocked condiments. The garden surrounding the cottage is beautiful you are truly in the rainforest. It is less than fifteen minutes to Volcanoes National Park. So quiet and peaceful. We highly recommend a stay here.
Enchanting Rainforest Hideaway
My wife and I loved Pele’s Secret Garden as a venue to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. Upon arrival we were delighted with a beautiful centerpiece of fresh flowers, a tray of local tropical fruit and a refrigerator stocked with canned beverages and breakfast items. The home is beautifully decorated in a homey Hawaiian motif and well furnished for preparing whatever meals we chose to have at “home”. The wrap-around deck is a great place to enjoy the sounds of the rainforest at any hour of the day or evening.
Our primary interest in visiting the Big Island of Hawaii was the Volcanos National Park, which is just a 10 minute drive from the cottage. The nearby Village of Volcano offers great dining options and good convenience shopping. Other attractions less than an hour away are a coffee plantation, a winery and a macadamia nut plantation/processing facility. The city of Hilo, with good shopping, dining and tourism venues is only 30 minutes away.
Very calm, quiet, serene, and refreshing. Loved both the remoteness and easy access to stores/park.
This was a great cross-island getaway for our family. Our host, Peggy, was fully prepared with a well decorated and stocked home. Living in Kailua-Kona, we also get a lot company and know what it takes to stay prepared all the time. We couldn't have done what she did better ourselves. Overall we loved it and hope to make it an annual trip.
Mahalo for your kind works. It's guests like you that keep me doing what I do. We look forward to having you come stay again.
Perfect location for a visit to Volcano National Park
Peggy's House is just beautiful and also the area around the house is great.
We found everything in the house you would need and the torches came very handy for the nighttime visit to the park.
The house was very clean and is nicely decorated. We would greatly recommend this lodging and would love to stay there again! Mahalo Peggy for letting us stay in your great home!
Totally my pleasure hosting you and so happy to hear how you enjoyed your stay.
Please come back and stay again.
