Stay in a piece of history. This house, in the owner's family for generations and called Mellowstone for over 100 years, is the only property on Lake George that sits on the Nation Historic Register. Filed under the name Owl’s Nest, the sister property and Mellowstone remain the only properties with this prestigious recognition. Mellowstone gained such accolades because it was once the library of literary great, Edward Eggleston, the owner's great great grandfather! See more about Edward Eggleston in Wikipedia. Mellowstone was built around in the late 1800’s. Eggleston was an author and historian who wrote such books as The Hoosier Schoolmaster; The Hoosier Schoolboy; The Household History of the US and it's People; Circuilt Rider; Faith Doctor; Pocahontas and Roxy.
Mellowstone, which features granite exterior walls, was converted into a four-season house after several years of historic planning and an extensive renovation that took place over the past six months retaining much of it's sense of history while incorporating the modern conveniences.
House Specifics: The first floor of the house boasts 13 foot ceilings with two non functioning wood burning fireplaces, a designer kitchen and masterful wood work. The house features hardwood floors throughout with three bedrooms on the second floor, one on the first floor and one in the guest 'suite' which is reached only through an exterior door. The house has three Three quarter bathrooms with showers. Each room features a queen bed! The house offers all new electricity, heating, air conditioning, on demand hot water, top of the line washer and dryer for laundry and stainless steel kitchen appliances. The house features a beautiful Mahogany deck that is built on granite stone piers too! The boathouse is fully enclosed and fully renovated. Beautiful lawns and gardens extend to the waterfront where you'll find the firepit on the patio with lawn furniture as well as the boathouse and dock. The boathouse is not available but there is parking on the side of the docks for up to a 26' boat. Swim from the docks.
You won’t find a more special place on the lake to share wonderful summer or winter memories. The house is conveniently located to number ski areas such as West Mountain (25 minutes), Gore Mountain (30 minutes) & Whiteface Mountain (60 minutes).

Beautiful House with Great Location
This lakehouse was clearly lovingly renovated and was great for our group. All of the rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. It was slightly awkward that the fifth bedroom didn't have interior access but we made it work. It would also be ideal to have a bureau in every bedroom. The bathrooms were beautifully appointed and the kitchen had just about everything we needed. A microwave would be welcomed, though, for quick meals. The overall property was beautiful and the lake access was terrific. We appreciated having a dock to dock our rental boat. Having previously rented other houses on Lake George, we would definitely make this our first choice in the future!
Nice place to stay, but not quite as represented
Our 3 generation family stayed in this house on Dark Bay for a week in July. We had a great time with each other and enjoyed the house immensely. But, before you rent is you might want to know:
a microwave in the kitchen (as listed in the description but not included in reality) would have helped with some of the leftovers.
a bolt on the inside of the main floor bath door would prevent additional folks being surprised in the shower
on move out day the sprinklers gave us extra incentive to hurry (we had to be out by 9 which wouldn't have been an issue except for carrying bags out to the car through the sprinklers)
The house was listed as 5 bedrooms. this is technically correct, but the 5th bedroom is downstairs, with no inside access and no walkway to the door. we were fortunate to be able to ask two of the kids to sleep together to make accomodation for the basement bed room being unusable. We couldn't find any volunteers willing to walk through the sprinkers and up the wet grass on the hill in their night clothes to the coffee pot in the morning , and it was cold enough in that room that it really isn't usable except by inuits in their winter garb. we did use that as an outside bathroom while we were on the lake front.
Owner refused to let two middle aged local family members visit for a day during the rental week. If we had known about the restriction up front, before we had committed to renting the house, we would have probably looked elsewhere for a more accomodating situation.
To Whom It May Concern: this review, while still a four star doesn't begin to tell the full details of why we didn't deserve a five star. First, I was extremely kind and accommodating to this family despite their continued efforts to expand the group size beyond what we CLEARLY listed on the rental agreement. They stayed during a rainy week, which I felt bad, otherwise the 5th bedroom which is typically the most coveted because of it's exclusivity is nice and cool which is a bonus on 80-90 degree nights. AC is typically a good thing! Also, I do not represent a microwave in the house although I would gladly install one if anyone during the screening process felt it was necessary. Lastly, the 9:30-10 AM checkout should leave plenty of time for the sprinkler system to shut off...it runs for 1:15 minutes at 5:30 AM...by the way...not many people have sprinkler systems on the lake. I hope that this answers and confusion that was created by this review. Onward and upward.
Beautiful Lakefront Home
A beautiful house in a spectacular setting! Lovely furnishings throughout and well appointed as the photos depict. Not a detail was missed in the restoration of this historic site. The boathouse is beautiful, we enjoyed having our boat with us to cruise the lake throughout the week. AC was a very nice touch! This house is a win.
