About the host
Hosted by Katrina Weinig
I work for an environmental organization and my husband, John, works in global development. This property reflects our love and commitment to the natural world and sustainability. We love hiking, skiing, gardening, exploring the world's remote and beautiful places and, best of all, sharing these experiences with family and friends. Our family includes three adult children and their partners, three grandsons, our cat Dior and dog Sadie.
Why they chose this property
The Upper Hudson River and Catskill Mountain region blend lively and fascinating history, natural beauty, art and culture. We love the forests, streams and mountains of the region, as well as the small river towns, orchards, breweries and laid-back culture. This is the birthplace of the Hudson River Valley school of art - you can visit Thomas Cole's and Frederick Church's homes nearby Catskill and Hudson, and hike to many of the sites they painted. The river towns of Coxsackie, Athens, New Baltimore, Catskill and Hudson are only minutes away and feature summer music and arts festivals, farmer's markets, restaurants and breweries. Kayaks are available to rent in Coxsackie, Athens and Catskill to paddle the Hudson River or its tributary streams. Birders will love watching the numerous species on our property! And there's virtually limitless hiking opportunities for all levels of walkers, from short and easy trails by the river to longer, challenging hikes in the mountains.
What makes this property unique
We were drawn to this property by the beautiful, stream-fed lake, which is part of the local drinking water supply. The historic mill house next to the lake (c. 1798) has been renovated with a hanging day bed, hammocks and chairs for relaxing after a swim, and is fully screened-in. Guests can swim off the dock or paddle the canoe or paddleboards. The lake and cabin are surrounded by 100 acres of woods with over 3 miles of marked walking trails - have fun exploring and look for the mysterious, large stone mounds on the property!
