Overview

About the property

The Lil House is a four bedroom, three bath, house on stilts with a porch all the way around allowing for a breeze at anytime of the day or night. It has the best view of the sunset on Dauphin Island allowing for memorable front porch memories. The sandy yard with seawall just feet from the porch allows for the best of both island worlds--sand fun for the kids, and boat access for the sports enthusiast. The fishing from seawall/boardwalk is great both day and night. Dolphins are frequent visitors at Lil House and can often be seen swimming in front of the house. So whether you are a family with small children, or snowbirds looking for tranquility, or a fishing afficienado, the Lil House is for you!

About Susan Carley

I am a 49 year old mother of two middle schoolers living in Mobile, Alabama with my husband, Kevin. I own a coffee shop in the historic part of town called Cream & Sugar Café. We live just a short 35 minute drive from the island where we love ALL water sports and just watching the sunsets and dolphins....that never gets old!

Susan Carley purchased this house in 1974

Why Susan Carley chose Dauphin Island

My grandmother, Lil, built this beautiful island house in the early 70's and I grew up coming to the house every summer with my six cousins and two siblings. We have fond memories of running the seawall chasing porpoises, fishing morning and night, and crabbing with chicken bones with my grandmother. Now my children run the seawalls, catch our dinner, and swim in the very water that we did as children.

What makes this house unique

My uncle designed the house to be like a steamboat with a porch 'deck' all the way around the house, doors in every room that open out onto the 'deck', and water views from every window. The front porch with swing and rocking chairs offers the best sunset view on the island. It also sits so close to the seawall that the adults can sit in the shade (of upstairs or downstairs deck) and watch the kids as they swim, ski, or kayak in front of the house. Because the house is situated on a cul-de-sac, the children can ride their bikes and play safely with other neighborhood kids. The house faces the Mississippi Sound allowing for good fishing and boat access, but is directly across the street from Lafitte Bay which is a no wake zone and allows for great, safe place for kayaking or swimming. The house is just a short two block walk from the Gulf front beaches which gives you the option of a day at the beach or a day of watersports. The kids will also love sandcrabbing on the beach at night!

Notes:
The downstairs bunkroom is not suitable for small children since you must go outside and down the stairs (albeit covered) to access the room. But this room is a perfect 'get away' for teens with its sofa, TV and play station. The deck downstairs gets a nice breeze since the house is on stilts. There is covered seating and open deck area both adjacent to the sandy yard where the kids play and the boardwalk-covered seawall where someone is always fishing. There is a bike trail that extends from one end of the island to the other and several bike rental companies on the island. There is a sea lab and estuarium that is open to the public seven days a week. Its very educational and a new shark and stingray tanks allows for petting. There is a bird sanctuary on the island with a beautiful boardwalk leading through the piney area of the island to a secluded beach. Because the house has plenty of beds but limited living space area, for your comfort, we request no more than 10 guests.

Charming beach cottage with THE most incredible view

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a wonderful stay at this house. I grew up on Dauphin Island and have to say that this location has one of the most incredible sunset views I have ever seen. This cottage is so full of character- from the vintage wood floors, to the ample farmhouse table, to the white slipcover couches. Susan has a very thoughtful eye for relaxed and beautiful beach decor. The downstairs area was perfect for our teenagers. We spent our days kayaking and paddle boarding, fishing right off the dock, biking to the Lighthouse Bakery(a must do- but get there early!), beach combing for shells, and mostly just sitting on the porch swing gazing at that incredible view. We were lucky to see dolphins every single day- and one day, they played in front of the house for hours(long enough to hop in the kayaks and paddle around with them). A few other must do's-- a visit to the Estuarium, a ride on the ferry (weather permitting), take out steamed spicy shrimp from Skinners, bike ride to the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. This location truly has the best of all the island has to offer. Thank you so much, Susan, for sharing it with us!

Family Vacation 2017

  • 3 of 5

The Island is quiet and the sunsets are beautiful! The house needs some attention. A lot of the furnishings were in need of repair and the house needed a thorough cleaning. We had nice weather for July and the fishing rodeo was fun. The bakery on the island was terrific and the fresh seafood store was great too! The beach house came equipped with paddle boards and kayaks which the kids had fun in the bay.

A great vacation property!

  • 4 of 5

Miss Susan made us feel very welcome. The house is decorated like a beach house. And you cannot beat the location-5 feet to the Sound and a short walk to the Gulf. We road bikes all over the Island, enjoyed the awesome beach and at the end of the day endless and beautiful sunsets. The home has comfortable beds-some are firmer which some may require like me. You have all the required items for cooking though if you are a home cook like me it might be better to bring your own cantina (I did). Wish there was a deep big pot on sight for Lobster or pasta. Other than that this is a place this family will return to. Thanks for a super stay, one of the best vacations we have had on DI over the last 7 years.

Property and location was great!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed this lil house! there was 9 of us all adults. the house is small but did not feel like we were tripping over each other. the deck upstairs is great for views of sunsets, dolphins and birds! the space downstairs was great and plenty of room! and although our trip was very rainy and windy (tropical storm Cindy blew in) we still enjoyed the trip. the beach was very close to walk to and not crowded and beautiful! fishing off the pier at the house was wonderful and swimming there also! The owner called several times to check on us throughout the storm and that was very appreciated!

Charming beachhouse with absolutely breathtaking sunsets!

  • 5 of 5

This property has awesome views of the water and the sunsets are gorgeous! My grandsons and nephew did a lot of fishing. This was a great spot for fishing and of course playing in the water. We got to watch the dolphins play a few times and other wildlife as well. We went to the West end beach a few times and went shelling. We actually went walking on the beach every day and had a great time. We really enjoyed sitting on the swings and chilling out on the deck at the house. Thank you Susan for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: We are so glad you and the boys and the others enjoyed vacationing on Dauphin Island! Lil House is such a special place to us and it's great to hear that others find it special too. We hope to see you again soon! (FYI: we just added three more bikes for a total of four, making it another affordable family fun thing to do on the island. The bike paths go from one end of the island to the other, making for countless adventures for teenagers and everyone.)
