About Sophie

Relaxing in a beautiful spot on the beach.

Why Sophie chose Limon

Costa Rica offers a wide variety of spectacular terrain , animals and plants. With its unique location it boasts both Pacific and Caribbean coast lines. The Caribbean Coast offers a more relaxed friendly holiday with the added excitement of some extreme sports, for those who want to venture away from the delicious local food, drinks and beach. There are many reasons why Puerto Viejo is known as the most happening town on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. There is so much to see and do here, but far and away the overall vibe here is the 'pura vida' that Costa Rica is so famous for. So whether you come to relax under the palms on one of Puerto Viejo's beautiful beaches or try and tackle the surf at Salsa Brava (just 100 yards away) or Cocles, there is also great snorkelling and diving in the areas active coral reefs. Or how would you like to hike and bike through the jungle? There is also excellent white-water rafting in the area. It is all possible here.

What makes this bungalow unique

Cocles Beach is the winner of the highly coveted Costa Rican government Blue Flag for pristine beach and is the only lifeguard-protected beach on the Caribbean Coast. The golden sands meet the warm Caribbean ocean and from the beach no buildings are visible. This beach has both great surfing at one end and safe swimming for families with children at the other. Please note that the route to the beach from the beach gate goes through a small strip of jungle (about 5-8 metres in width). This is national park and therefore cannot be cleared, so at times it can be over grown. If guests have mobility issues, the beach can be easily accessed from the main house gate, where the beach can be reached by just a short two minute walk along a small lane.

Truly magical getaway in the jungle

  • 5 of 5

Set just a few feet back from the beach, this stunning house is surrounded by nature at its finest! Whilst staying at casa Marisa we saw all the fabulous animals and wildlife that habitat the area, it was amazing! The house is beautiful and modern, the bathrooms are stunning! The hammocks outside provided a fab spot for a relaxing read. With the endless beaches around, long walks exploring the national parks and loc beaches was a daily must! The town of Puerto Viejo was great for a huge range of delicious cuisine, and great drinks too! Staying at casa Marisa was hands down the most memorable trip of my life so far, a completely unspoilt treasure.

Paradise!!!

  • 5 of 5

I don't even know where to begin!! We had spoken to different groups of people during the first two weeks of our stay in Costa Rica and either people had never traveled to the Caribbean side or they didn't really like it....we considered cancelling our reservations and finding somewhere else to stay! All I can say is their ignorance was our blessing!!! Casa Marisa on Cocles Beach was by far the most amazing week of our 3 week vacation! Sophie was easy to deal with via email when booking our trip and her property manager Thomas is very easy going and friendly.

There are two cottages on the property, Casa Marisa and Casa Caracola. We choose Casa Marisa as it is a beatiful 2 bedroom 2 bath bungalow and we thought we may have family travelling with us. It turned out that it was only the two of us and the space seemed huge but we loved it!!! Casa Marisa is set back on the property closer to the entrance gate than the beach but it is only 100 steps thru the garden to the beach gate...yes, I counted!! If I lived 100 steps from the beach every day I would think I was in Paradise!! The gardens are gorgeous, banana trees, pineapples , hibiscus and many many other plants that attract hummingbirds and the most beautiful blue butterflies...oh...did I mention the trees that surround the property where the howler monkeys live!

Casa Marisa is fully equipped with everything you will need to enjoy your vacation, full kitchen, coffee maker, blender for smoothies, bar-b-que, outdoor furniture, safe, alarm and the entire property is fenced and locked. We slept with the doors open every night so that we could enjoy the sounds, the ocean, monkeys, birds and the occasional downpour.

If/when we return, we will probably book Casa Caracola as it would be all the space the two of us would need and it has a beautiful view of Cocles Beach.

Cocles Beach is absolutely the most beautiful beach we have ever seen! White sand and clear water that just goes on and on....the best part is that it is basically private!!

The properties are also walking distance to a grocery store ( which had one of the best selections of wine that we saw in Costa Rica), a French bakery where we bought bread daily as well as yummy baked goods and a 5 star Italian Ristorante, La Pechora Nera.

The drive to the Caribbean coast was also interesting, passing banana farms and feeling/seeing the difference in culture as soon as you got outside of Limon! We will be returning to this paradise!!

Perfect property in perfect location to completely unwind and enjoy the natural setting

  • 5 of 5

Casa Marisa exceeded our expectations and made for a truly memorable Christmas family holiday.Beautifully designed contemporary house with light airy spaces allowed us to enjoy the stunning tropical gardens and abundance of nature and wildlife.

The kitchen was well equipped with a brand new large cooker. We had no problems with insects as we were mindful not to leave food out.We enjoyed eating on the dining table on the outside patio with lovely views.

The four poster bed with enclosed nets was very special and we enjoyed waking up to the sound of waves crashing, birds singing and even howler monkeys making themselves known! Seeing wildlife in the garden and jungle pathways was amazing for all our family to witness.Being in a National Park dont expect manicured pathways, the true essence of the location is it is natural, eco friendly with respect for the environment. Cocles beach is literally at the bottom of the garden with a secure locked gate. Its perfect for long walks on unspoilt white sand or surfing if you are more adventurous. We loved splashing about in the waves most mornings! We liked the fact that you couldn't see any properties from the beach as the jungle provides a natural screen and privacy.

There are lots of great little restaurants and a well stocked supermarket was a bike ride away.Yoga and massage are offered nearby at Caribeans, with the benefit of producing the best chocolate I have ever tasted. We met the neighbours who were really friendly.

We found the house to be super clean with lovely walk in showers and towels a plenty. We used the ceiling fans at night to keep the rooms cool which is always much better than horrible A/C.

The alarm was easy to use and gave us total piece of mind.

We would love to stay here again one day as it really was magical. Id recommend it to families wanting adventure and to get off the beaten track, a great place to unwind and enjoy the natural unspoilt surroundings.

Our Costa Rica wedding

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were planning our first trip to Costa Rica. We were looking for a place that was more secluded and private as we were getting married at the the beach. The house was all we were hoping for it was just steps away from the almost empty beach the home was very well maintained and comfortable. We hired a photographer to come and take pictures of us at the house and then the wedding the photos came out beautifully. The house keeper and caretaker were very pleseant and available. We would definitely recommend this place to our friends and would consider a return trip

Owner's Response: We are thrilled that this couple had such a beautiful and special wedding whilst staying in Casa Marisa. They shared some lovely pictures with us of their day and it looked truly magical. We are so pleased that our house, gardens and the stunning location was part of their dream day. Casa Marisa is a wonderful location for an intimate wedding and/or a romantic honeymoon.

Beautiful gardens, wonderful house, on beach

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay at Casa Marisa. The owners were very helpful and their property manager was extremely friendly and assisted us with great insights for places to go and interesting sights to experience. He even called us when Lazlo was bringing in fish and would be open that night. Incredible meal!!! The house is very spacious and comfortable. Wonderful wildlife in the garden and on the beach. We highly enjoyed our stay and hope to return one day soon.

Beautiful property, but a bit disappointing that you can't actually see the ocean from the house.

  • 4 of 5

The home is lovely, quite new and modern, and set in a beautiful yard with tropical flowers, grass and trees, all very well maintained. There's a long shared driveway accessed from the main road just south of the southernmost Coccles bridge, and awesome 200 ft tall trees just across fr the driveway from the house. We often saw - and heard - howler monkeys in the tops of those trees, which was really neat. The 2 BR home is well away from the 1 BR bungalow which shares the property; the 1 BR is much closer to the beach, whereas this 2 BR is set well back, next to the driveway gate. You are required to keep both the beach gate and the driveway gate locked at all times, which we found to be a bit of a pain. There is also an alarm system (which we didn't use) and a safe, which we did use. The living room seating is very nice and comfortable; the kitchen is well appointed with a nice fridge, a good 4-burner gas stove, both a French press and a regular coffeemaker, a juicer and plenty of dishes and cookware, but NO microwave. The only dining table is outside on the deck. Both bedrooms are lovely and have ceiling fans (but no AC); there's a nice closet in the MBR and in the master bath, but no closet in the smaller BR or its bath. However, both bathrooms are very large and luxurious. We didn't really miss the TV as the wi-fi was good, and we didn't miss the AC as the fan kept us plenty cool at night. We did wish the bed was a King instead of a Queen, though, and we did miss having a microwave. We stayed for 2 weeks, and never actually used the beach in front of the house because there were no trees for our hammocks, and also no shade. We found better beaches just a couple miles to the south.

Our only real complaint -- and it's nothing the owners can cure -- is the neighbors' barking dogs, which awakened us occasionally in the early morning and several times during the night as well. Other than the dogs -- and the howler monkeys (which were REALLY loud!), it was very quiet and peaceful. All in all, it's a beautiful vacation home.

Owner's Response: We thank these guests for their nice review and we are very pleased that they enjoyed their stay. The house does not always have a view of the ocean, and is not advertised as such, due to the strip of jungle in front of the house. However, you are only steps away from it and the calming sound of the waves lulls you to sleep at night. We do not provide a microwave, and again this house is not advertised as having one. We don't really like to use microwaves due to their negative affect on health and also their high energy consumption, which can damage the environment. We do try to limit our carbon footprint as much as possible, without compromising on facilities and comfort. There is a fully working oven with a four ring hob. We do ask our guests to alarm the house and keep gates and doors locked. This is to ensure the security of both their belongings and ours. The alarm is simple to use.
