About Richard Cheney

Hale Kōlea Cabin is a labor of love project by owner, Richard Cheney and his partner Kalani Chong. Richard, a graduate of University of Michigan, grew up in Williamston, Michigan and has been a Hawaii resident for over 35 years. Richard is a 12-time Honolulu Marathon and 3-time Iron Man finisher. His partner Kalani is a Native Hawaiian whose lineage can be traced back to Hawaii's Princess Ka'iulani. Kalani enjoys traveling to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and collecting vinyl records as art. Both live in Honolulu, Hawaii and work in the health care industry.

Richard Cheney purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Richard Cheney chose Alaska

Richard and Kalani unknowingly fell in love with Talkeetna while on a March 2012 winter vacation that began with Anchorage, then Fairbanks and eventually ended with a picturesque Aurora train ride to the charming town of Talkeetna. One night's stay in Trapper John's Cabin is all it took to launch research of available real estate that quickly led to groundbreaking four months later on July 3, 2012.

What makes this cabin unique

For the past 3 years, a kōlea bird or Pacific Golden Plover appeared every August at Richard and Kalani's residence in Honolulu, Hawaii. Every day this kōlea bird could be seen grazing the grassy parts of their property for an insatiable appetite of insects, all while enjoying the warm Hawaiian sun. Every April, their bird would vanish and heed its migratory call to flock north to Alaska. This miracle instinct fittingly inspired the cabin's name, Hale Kōlea (Ha-lay Co-lay-ah) or 'Kōlea House'.

We sincerely appreciate your interest in making Hale Kolea Cabin as a part of your next Alaskan adventure. We look forward to your stay.

A Slice of Hawaii in Talkeetna

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time that my wife and I have had the pleasure to stay at this wonderful cabin in Talkeetna AK. We live in Anchorage AK, but enjoy getting out of the city and visiting the terrific small towns that Alaska has to offer, and Talkeetna is one of our favorites. The cabin is beautifully furnished with warm woods throughout the cabin, and the kitchen appliances are top of the line. The Hawaiian décor, coffee and macadamia nut chocolates leave you to believe that you are just a stones throw from the white sandy beaches of any of your favorite 50th states islands. We particularly enjoy the cozy sauna located in the back of the cabin, attached to a gorgeous bath room with what I can only describe as the most unique shower I've ever had the pleasure of using. The river rock floor is something that you don't typically see and is now something that I plan to incorporate into my own home. If you are planning a trip to Talkeetna, I recommend this place as a must stay.

Quiet and relaxing getaway.

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I just spent our 7th anniversary at the cabin. We've gone other places, hotels, etc. but the cabin was perfect. Peaceful, tranquil, and relaxing. Maybe it's because we needed a break from the hustle and bustle of our lives, or perhaps a break for the dogs, cats, and kids but we could not have asked for a more perfect place to spend our weekend. Everything we needed was provided. The sauna was amazing and if we could have handled it, we would have spent every minute in it. Usually these little escapes leave us more worn out then when we arrived, but this time we left refreshed and renewed. We spent a little time in town but the sheer serenity of the cabin kept calling us back. Thank you so much for an amazing setting for our time together.

Time well spent!

This was a great home base for our first trip to Alaska. This cabin is very well planned, tasteful, relaxing and rejuvenating. Everything you need is where it should be. Cabin was very clean. The Owner and Manager are friendly and professional. The kitchen is very well stocked with staples, spices, oils, awesome coffee, teas, tasty chocolates and almost anything you could need to prepare meals.

The sounds and smells of this place are unforgettable: Periodic train whistles and small aircraft engines quietly mix with sounds of the forest. Clean smells of cedar/pine in the cabin blend with the beautiful pine/birch/aspen rain forest smells of the region.

We stayed here the 3rd week of September. The fall colors were amazing throughout the region! We got to see the beginnings of winter with snow creeping down the higher mountains. The town of Talkeetna was relaxed and shifting from busy summer season to quiet winter. Everyone we talked to had a story to tell, and time to tell it. This is a cool, laid-back town.

The in-house library is a nice touch. We enjoyed "Talkeetna Good Time" and the local history books.

In town, the historical society's museum and the ranger's station are both worth a visit. Don't forget the river trails and beach. We enjoyed seeing bald eagles while watching the blue/green waters of the Talkeetna River mix with the sandy waters of the Chulita and Susitna Rivers.

We enjoyed the Roadhouse, Denali Brewpub, Mountain High Pizza Pie and all the other local restaurants and shops we visited. We had hoped for a flight-seeing tour from Talkeetna Air Taxi, but the weather conditions weren't optimal for flying. Hopefully next time!

Give yourself plenty of opportunities to see Mt. Denali. It was hidden behind clouds much of the week, but when the skies cleared, wow! The views from the river beach and overlook are amazing!

Denali State Park is relatively close with some good trails and viewpoints off the highway. Denali National Park is beautiful if you have time to make the drive. We were happy to see a family of moose and some elk there. Visit the sled dog kennels if you go there and see the puppies.

We also enjoyed the 26 glacier cruise out of Whittier which we took the day we flew out of Anchorage.

We take great contentment in knowing you felt the comforts of home at Hale Kolea Cabin. We cherish our time in Talkeetna and appreciate the nuances you mentioned of the buzzing flights heading over Denali and the whistling trains traversing the village throughout the day and night. Talkeetna is the 'gateway' to Denali National Park & a great home base for activities such as: flightseeing tours to Denali (Mt. McKinley); mountaineering; salmon & fly fishing; hunting; horse back ridding; zip lining; cross country skiing; wilderness hiking; snow machining; dog sledding; shopping; restaurants and local craft fairs.

Evening summer concerts in the park are a favorite attraction for locals and visitors. Talkeetna was the inspiration for the popular TV series, 'Northern Exposure'.

Popular festivals are the Moose On The Loose parade & auction in July and Winterfest during the entire month of December, culminating with the Wilderness Woman contest and Bachelor Auction & Ball.

The core downtown district is classified as a National Historic Site which includes buildings dating back to the early 1900s, including Nagley's General Store, Fairview Inn and the Talkeetna Roadhouse. Mayor of Talkeetna is a cat named Stubbs.
