A Hawaiian-themed and beautifully cared for comfort cabin down a wooded street very close to downtown Talkeetna. This cabin has it all - and then some. Cozy up to the gas fireplace or enjoy a hot sauna. Friendly off-site hosts make it easy to enjoy a restful, well-equipped and comfortable stay. Great shops & restaurants close by.

Tim, mahalo for choosing to continue staying with us all these years. Congratulations on your 2026 Fat Tire victory. Please stay well and we look forward to hosting you in the future.
Just the best little place with everything you need. All the kitchen necessities, Netflix, paper towels, trash bags… it’s the little things. The sauna was a great plus. Our travel plans got messed up and they let us extend a night. Responded right away. I couldn’t of asked for more

Natalie, glad you had an excellent stay and found the cabin amenities to your liking. Thankfully we were able to add another day per your request. Mahalo for choosing us among the wide array of vacation rentals available in Talkeetna. And for contributing to our stellar reviews after 14 years of opening our home to Vrbo guests. Best to you and safe travels!
Jolene keeps the property in pristine condition! Felt very comfortable and everything we needed (or wanted) was available! *Thank you for providing coffee!! :) She offered to be available if we needed anything. The property was close to everything but back off the beaten path to feel like a getaway. We enjoyed using the sauna to start our day. The house is big enough that we were able to use different areas to spread out & not be on top of each other. The full size appliances were a plus. Thank you for a wonderful visit! 3

Many guests enjoy the cabin's nearness to Main Street, but short 20 minute walk away for the peace and quiet of an actual neighborhood.
We appreciate your business and we wish you a prosperous and healthy rest of 2026.
The hosts were welcoming, the kitchen was super well stocked so we were able to cook and bake, it was warm and cozy inside despite the very chilly outdoor temps (well below zero). Also, great selection of games!

Very well equipped cabin. Clean and tastefully decorated. Both the bed and sofa were comfortable. We rented two other cabins in this trip and while this was the most expensive, it was totally worth and was the nicest of the three .
Love this property! Perfect size for two. Giant shower and a sauna! Great property manager and great place to stay.

We loved our 2 night stay at this beautifully decorated and lovely cabin. It had everything we needed including a well equipped kitchen, washer/dryer and very comfortable bed. The location was near the town of Talkeetna. We didn’t get to use the sauna but sure it would have been nice. Overall, I would stay here again.

About the host
Hosted by Richard Cheney
Hale Kōlea Cabin is a labor of love project by owner, Richard Cheney and his husband Kalani Chong. Richard, a graduate of University of Michigan, grew up in Williamston, Michigan and has been a Hawaii resident for over 35 years. Richard is a 12-time Honolulu Marathon and 3-time Iron Man finisher. His husband Kalani is a Native Hawaiian whose lineage can be traced back to Hawaii's Princess Ka'iulani. Kalani enjoys traveling to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and collecting vinyl records as art. Both live in Hilo, Hawaii and work in the health care industry.
Why they chose this property
We are a legally-operated log cabin vacation rental: Alaska Business License #976961 Mat-Su Borough Business License #23383
Richard and Kalani unknowingly fell in love with Talkeetna while on a March 2012 winter vacation that began with Anchorage, then Fairbanks and eventually ended with a picturesque Aurora train ride to the charming town of Talkeetna. One night's stay in Trapper John's Cabin is all it took to launch research of available real estate that quickly led to groundbreaking four months later on July 3, 2012.
What makes this property unique
For the past 3 years, a kōlea bird or Pacific Golden Plover appeared every August at Richard and Kalani's residence in Honolulu, Hawaii. Every day this kōlea bird could be seen grazing the grassy parts of their property for an insatiable appetite of insects, all while enjoying the warm Hawaiian sun. Every April, their bird would vanish and heed its migratory call to flock north to Alaska. This miracle instinct fittingly inspired the cabin's name, Hale Kōlea (Ha-lay Co-lay-ah) or 'Kōlea House'.
We sincerely appreciate your interest in making Hale Kolea Cabin as a part of your next Alaskan adventure. We look forward to your stay!
