Overview

About the property

5 BR/ 3 bath, 193 yards to the beach, 10 blocks from Whaley's Bar & Grill

Over the Intracoastal Waterway and under Spanish moss- draped grand oaks you arrived in a timeless place, a haven for all God’s creatures, a hidden fountain of youth called Edisto Island. Our tiny paradise with its pristine beach has been untouched by commercialization and is one of the least developed islands on the Atlantic coast. Edistonians cherish their cultural heritage which dates back to 1570 when Spanish missionaries attempted to convert the Edisto Indians. The golden era began in 1790 and lasted until the Civil War when plantation owners amassed huge fortunes from the highly prized, long staple cotton. The Sea Cloud house name derives from the 19th century marriage between and contraction of the Seabrook and Mc Cloud family names. The newlyweds chose the name for their antebellum mansion sited upon a cotton plantation here on Edisto Island. Your Sea Cloud was built in 1995 by Karin and Al Gleaton (Columbia, SC) and R.H. Belser, III (Charleston, SC). We are, as you can imagine, proud owners. We are pleased to be your hosts and desire your vacation to be memorable.

Sea Cloud features four equally sized bedrooms on the main floor. Each room has a queen-sized bed. Each of the bedrooms on the first floor are separated by a full bathroom, accessed via the hallway connecting the bedrooms and every bedroom has a separate mirrored vanity and sink. The spacious upstairs loft level runs the entire length of the house and has four more beds (2 queens and 2 twins), a sunny children's play area, and a spacious bathroom with a double basin vanity, skylight and full bath & shower enclosure.

The vaulted-ceiling main salon combines the living room, dining room and a superbly equipped kitchen. The 160 square foot screened deck, attached to the kitchen, is carpeted and features a second full sized refrigerator for your extra drinks. The back deck was designed and built around a 50 foot tall ancient live oak tree. There are two large, walk-in shower stalls (with hot and cold water) on ground level and a large barrel-style charcoal BBQ grill. The house is built 10 feet off the ground which helps capture the ocean breeze and allows covered parking underneath the house for several large cars. The lush St. Augustine grass back yard is partially shaded by mature palmetto and oak trees.

Sea Cloud is on Myrtle Street, which is one street over and parallel to Palmetto Boulevard, the main drag. Being off Palmetto Boulevard is very cool for two reasons: 1) it's quieter and 2) it's safer for children to play in the front or back yard.

Whaley's Restaurant, our fave local dive, is 10 blocks away, down Myrtle--literally a short 10 minute walk. Whaley's claim to have the coldest beer and best hamburgers on Edisto!

Rental week is Saturday to Saturday during the summer months. Only weekly rentals in the high season. Please note that we do not provide linens, but there is a nearby source on the island. Unlimited Internet Service. Please be kind and sign the guest book and write a review on the vrbo.com website (# 462779). Your review is appreciated and valued. Daily delivery of Charleston’s newspaper, The Post & Courier, is our small gesture of thanks to you for choosing our beach house for your vacation.Remember if y’all enjoyed your visit, tell your friends. If you didn’t, tell us.

About Karin Gleaton

The Belsers and Gleatons are: Karin, a special education teacher and her husband Al Gleaton, a Columbia homebuilder. Hugh, a retired naval officer. Karin and Hugh Belser graduated from the University of South Carolina in the 70's. While attending Carolina it was a Spring Break ritual to book large houses on Edisto Island and gather friends for a week of beach fun. That tradition continued off and on during the 80's and 90's. In 1994, we discovered and bought an undeveloped, wooded lot on Myrtle Street . Al Gleaton, began to build Sea Cloud in 1995. It was his masterpiece and our pride and joy.

As Karin is fond of quoting, '"The beach is where you go to slow down; Edisto is where you go to stop'"

Karin Gleaton purchased this house in 1995

Why Karin Gleaton chose Charleston Area

Few can match Sea Cloud for comfort, utility, and value. First, the house is thoughtfully designed, solidly built and well insulated = quiet and cool. Secondly, we personally manage the property. Finally, it's a big house where four couples can choose to spread out or congregate in the open main salon/dining area.

Our faithful patrons (over half our bookings are friends or repeat visitors) are our best advertising. Their testimonials emphasize the care and attention we give them while they visit our 'home away from home.'

Capital improvements in the recent past include new hardwood floors, replacement front deck landing, new roof shingles, new beds, two new television sets, new A/C system, new washer dryer, kitchen fridge, Keurig coffemaker and new barbecue grill.

What makes this house unique

Sea Cloud is an architectural gem featuring a Charlestonian double staircase leading to a 40 foot wide veranda. The front porch has comfortable chairs, tables and a chaise lounge. The screen porch on the back deck overlooks a shady backyard with lush St. Augustine grass. We're proud of the craftsmanship and thoughtful design of our beach house. For example, Sea Cloud has a separate mirrored vanity and wash basin in each bedroom, plus hot and cold water in the two downstairs outdoor showers. The top level has a length-of-the-house loft area with four beds for the younger set. We also have a second full-sized refrigerator on the back porch for cold beverages. Finally, who else, but Sea Cloud, delivers the (Charleston) Post & Courier newspaper to your doorstep every morning ?

Great Family Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

This home provided my family of 12 plenty of room to enjoy each other without getting to close. It is in a great location and far enough away from the beach to enjoy the beauty and quietness of Edisto. We will definitely be returning next year for our family vacation.

Spacious, quiet and close to the beach!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd stay at Sea Cloud, the owners are easy to work with and quick to respond. We love the layout and large living area in this home. The screened back porch has been a great space for us to enjoy having family and friends over to share a big meal with. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and serving up your favorite meal. The quiet street makes it so nice to read on the front porch and then take a short walk to the beach. We look forward to staying again!

Family Reunion 2016

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beach house. This house served as the focal point of an August 2016 32-person family reunion (with two other houses nearby serving to help accommodate the masses). This house is well laid out, offers a short walk to several beach access points, its large front porch was used nightly for socializing, and the 2 hot water showers on the ground level were used routinely when returning from the beach or a long morning walk. The owners (to include the “fine cigar smoking yardman”) were extremely accommodating to our needs and we’ll be sure to book another stay in the upcoming years.

Family Get-together 2016

  • 5 of 5

Many of us are skeptical of property descriptions as so many tend to exaggerate. However the description for this property is understated. This Sea Cloud is absolutely superb. It is well equipped beyond what one might expect of a rental property. Satellite TV's in all rooms. Solid but elegant furnishings throughout. There is WiFi and a land line readily available. Four bedrooms on the first living area and a spacious wonderfully mural area for kids of many ages on the second level . We had 6 adults and 3 grandkids age 16 months to 7 years . Kitchen and dining area are well equipped and organized. Two excellent refrigerators performed flawlessly. Property was spotless on arrival. The owners provided many tips about the house and the local area prior to our arrival. Contact with them on our questions was quickly returned. Recommended eating spots were superb. The Sea Cloud holds a library of books and games which speaks volumes of the owners' solid family and professional values. Covered parking was easy under the spacious decks for our four full size SUVs and could have accommodated two additional of same size. Beach access was just a few minutes walk down a very safe street. The Sea Cloud's front street is very quiet which made the beautiful front porch a happy gathering place with nice vistas. In recent years we have held our annual family gathering at the family mountain lake house in Tennessee. After this visit to the Sea Cloud and Edisto Beach (which is not a maddening tourist spot like some beach locations) we have all determined to put in a rotation to this gracious facility. We thank the Belsers and Gleatons so much for allowing us to enjoy the Sea Cloud.

family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We loved our family vacation at Sea Cloud. The house was a home with everything in kitchen we could want. Plenty of room and the little touches made it feel like a home instead of a rental house. We loved the easy walk to the nice beach and the porches and patio for family gathering. The outside showers was an extra nice bonus. The owner was very prompt in answering all our many questions about the area and house before our arrival. Thank you for such a wonderful week.
