Over the Intracoastal Waterway and under Spanish moss- draped grand oaks you arrived in a timeless place, a haven for all God’s creatures, a hidden fountain of youth called Edisto Island. Our tiny paradise with its pristine beach has been untouched by commercialization and is one of the least developed islands on the Atlantic coast. Edistonians cherish their cultural heritage which dates back to 1570 when Spanish missionaries attempted to convert the Edisto Indians. The golden era began in 1790 and lasted until the Civil War when plantation owners amassed huge fortunes from the highly prized, long staple cotton. The Sea Cloud house name derives from the 19th century marriage between and contraction of the Seabrook and Mc Cloud family names. The newlyweds chose the name for their antebellum mansion sited upon a cotton plantation here on Edisto Island. Your Sea Cloud was built in 1995 by Karin and Al Gleaton (Columbia, SC) and R.H. Belser, III (Charleston, SC). We are, as you can imagine, proud owners. We are pleased to be your hosts and desire your vacation to be memorable.
Sea Cloud features four equally sized bedrooms on the main floor. Each room has a queen-sized bed. Each of the bedrooms on the first floor are separated by a full bathroom, accessed via the hallway connecting the bedrooms and every bedroom has a separate mirrored vanity and sink. The spacious upstairs loft level runs the entire length of the house and has four more beds (2 queens and 2 twins), a sunny children's play area, and a spacious bathroom with a double basin vanity, skylight and full bath & shower enclosure.
The vaulted-ceiling main salon combines the living room, dining room and a superbly equipped kitchen. The 160 square foot screened deck, attached to the kitchen, is carpeted and features a second full sized refrigerator for your extra drinks. The back deck was designed and built around a 50 foot tall ancient live oak tree. There are two large, walk-in shower stalls (with hot and cold water) on ground level and a large barrel-style charcoal BBQ grill. The house is built 10 feet off the ground which helps capture the ocean breeze and allows covered parking underneath the house for several large cars. The lush St. Augustine grass back yard is partially shaded by mature palmetto and oak trees.
Sea Cloud is on Myrtle Street, which is one street over and parallel to Palmetto Boulevard, the main drag. Being off Palmetto Boulevard is very cool for two reasons: 1) it's quieter and 2) it's safer for children to play in the front or back yard.
Whaley's Restaurant, our fave local dive, is 10 blocks away, down Myrtle--literally a short 10 minute walk. Whaley's claim to have the coldest beer and best hamburgers on Edisto!
