About the property

Newly Renovated Stone Farmhouse on 15 Acres Between New Paltz and High Falls

Our historic 4 bedroom French Huguenot style farmhouse was built in 1796 and is bordered by 6,400 acres of the forests, streams and lakes of the Mohonk Preserve designated by the Nature Conservancy as one of the "Earth's Last Great Places". You can literally step out of the house onto over 80 miles of hiking and biking trails.

The entire home was completely remodeled in 2013 and has all new appliances and furnishings. There is a chef’s kitchen with island and adjacent dining area with large country dining table for family meals. The living room has a massive stone fireplace for evenings by the fire.

All the bedrooms are designed for comfort with pillow top mattresses. Three bedrooms have king sized beds, one king that can be separated into twin beds and one bedroom has a queen sized bed. The master bedroom has its own private bath.

The house has air conditioning and all bedrooms have ceiling fans. There is WiFi.

The stone back deck is a great place to observe wildlife including squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, deer, cardinals, great blue heron, and Canada geese. The back deck is also equipped with a BBQ, chaise lounges, and dining table for outdoor living.

The house is located between the Hamlet of High Falls and the town of New Paltz and is minutes away from the renowned Mohonk Mountain House with its spa ranked #1 in the country by Conde Nast. Monhonk Mountain House also has a fabulous restaurant, tennis courts, and golf course.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the nearby hiking and biking paths, rock climbing, swimming and cross country skiing. The area is also known for fantastic antiquing and great restaurants, given its proximity to the Culinary Institute of America located just across the Hudson River.

Rental is available year-round on a flexible basis for guests and families looking for a quiet, relaxing rural retreat or active family vacation.

Check-in is after 4pm and check-out is by 11 am unless otherwise arranged directly with the manager.

Why Bruce Stalnaker chose Hudson Valley

We fell in love with the High Falls area when our daughter chose it for her wedding in 2008. Having a stone farm house surrounded by the natural beauty of this area of the Hudson River Valley is a dream come true for us and is a homecoming of sorts for Susan who grew up in Poughkeepsie. We are only the fifth family to own the home and are honored to be part of its incredible 217 year history.

Our primary residence is in Sonoma County, California where we grow wine grapes and produce wine under our own label.

The 1796 Farmhouse is perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This home was absolutely beautiful and perfect in every way. The architects who designed its renovation gracefully updated the interior to meet modern day needs and expectations, while keeping the integrity of the original space in tact. As a vacation home, it was ideal for our family of adults and one baby. The living room is comfortable and spacious; the dining/kitchen area perfect for many to hang out while others prepare meals; the kitchen itself is amazing, having been designed by a former chef at Mohonk; the bedrooms equally comfortable so there won't be much "conversation" around who gets which room. Check out the little alcove in one bedroom; a perfect hiding spot/nook for children of all ages. And, while we're on that topic, make sure to open the large trunk in the living room. What a delight to find the array of toys hidden there! Now, on to outside. The grounds are perfect for hanging out: a hammock, grassy lawn, table, chairs, and lounges on the patios..... Ideal for three seasons of the year. The location is perfect, not only to the surrounding villages, but also to access trails just minutes from the house. Many in our family awakened early each morning to take walks, especially on the trail just behind the old church. For those who aren't exactly fans of hiking, that trail is quite tame and awards you with amazing views of the valley. In addition to all of these features, the agent who manages the home checked in regularly and was both accessible and easy to communicate with. We had a wonderful vacation there and would love to return.

The Surprising Tranquility We Step Onto

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful stone house brings to life its historical charm, structural simplicity, and material honesty. We find ourselves enveloped by an unusual sense of rest and peace, a quality you can not find in the city. We enjoy our outdoor meals on the terrace overlooking expansive sloping lanscape. We feel that our soul does not seem to be confined within the boundary of our body. The setting somehow refreshes our fading relationships among friends and members of families. It is a wonderful experience that I will not hesitate to tell other people. Our house manager, Bruce, makes our transition in and out so very smooth.

Perfect Memorial WE

  • 5 of 5

We had a very pleasant stay at Brodhead house where we felt at home from the very first minute we entered. The house is full of character and history, perfectly decorated and well equipped. But more than that, we had the impression to be waited with all basic food and beverage in the cabinets and fridge, phone chargers available, toys in the chest for our daughter, notes from the owner on the House history and visits to be made. Our hosts were not present and invasive but regularly inquiring about our stay. The area is also perfect for hiking and outdoor activities. Definitely recommended for every season.

Picture Perfect Home!

  • 5 of 5

We picked this home for our annual wine weekend. There were four couples who walked in the door and were amazed at finding such a beautiful home for their stay. The kitchen had everything we needed to have our culinary expert cook us up amazing meals! The 4 bedrooms were tastefully decorated (having linens and towels provided is always a plus) and the living room with the stone fireplace (plenty of firewood available) was inviting and comfortable. Very convenient to many of the local wineries and breweries. Bruce is a very efficient manager of this beautiful property with constant communication from beginning to end! Hope to be back there soon!

Fabulous weekend at the cozy, charming mountain retreat stone house

  • 5 of 5

Much thanks to Bruce for helping me book our weekend trip at the last minute. He was very quick to respond and very professional and yet with such care. He was always in touch and made sure we were ok and gave us great advice for awesome hikes close to the home. Returning to the house after a hike by the Minnewasaka Lake in such cold windy Saturday couldn't have been sweeter. We all enjoyed sitting in the comfy sofas and warmed up by the fireplace. This house is historic, cozy and very comfortable. Kitchen area is so charming. Bedrooms were clean and the beds were super comfortable. Didn't get to enjoy the backyard because it was a very cold weekend but will definitely book again when the weather warms up. New Paltz is a short driving distance for a quick getaway weekend trips and this house is perfect to stay with family or friends. Also has many great places to eat. We enjoyed our weekend very much and loved staying at this house. Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. Thank you Bruce for your sincere hospitality!
