About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 bathroom sleeps 5, Beachfront on Lake Erie , Historical home

When you arrive at this picturesque property you will find yourself nestled in the middle of a cove between Point Gratiot park and Canadaway Creek on 1.5 acres and 200ft of beachfront on Lake Erie. This listing is for our awesome 1000sq ft 2 BR/1BA upstairs apartment with a separate side door entrance. A King, queen and pullout twin are included in the rental. This unit is part of the original Hequembourg estate built in 1910. *Harminnie was the original name of this mansion from Major Harry and Minnie Hequembourg (Neighborhood named after him down the street) whom originally owned the entire bay from canadaway creek to crooked brook creek, and actually was a major contributor to the development of the area. He has an amazing background/history and upon arriving you will have a booklet with original pictures of the house and information about a camp he used to run for children in the early 1920's.

In front of our house there is about 5 feet of smooth rocks and then about 200ft of sandbar you can wade in and is perfect for swimming . On the beach you can spend time hunting for beach glass and driftwood, lay out and catch some sun or take a 10 minute walk down to the Dunkirk Boardwalk at the harbor to enjoy a bite to eat, a cocktail, or satisfy a shopping craving with a couple different shops. Dunkirk Harbor also offers a marina and a public launching facility to access Lake Erie.

Do you want to go fishing? Take a charter out of the harbor, drop your line in the warm water outlet for the coal plant (official NY fishing spot) or try and haul in a big one from the mouth of the creek, which is less than a half mile from the house.

Enjoy concerts and an art scene? Chautauqua Institute is about a 40 minute drive, you can enjoy their symphony, concerts, speaking venues and theater performances. Lake Chautauqua offers many attractions available by boat that includes Midway Amusement Park, Long Point State Park, shopping, and numerous restaurant/bar establishments. There is truly something for everyone there.

Consider a wine tour if you’re looking to venture away from the lake for a bit. Lake Erie Wine Country, just a 5-10 minute drive from the house is part of the largest grape-growing region east of the Rockies, extends roughly 45 miles from Silver Creek, New York to North East, Pennsylvania. At the end of 2011, it has become home to over 24 commercial and estate wineries. Check them out at http://www.lakeeriewinecountry.org/about-wine-country .

Other attractions within arms reach include Niagara Falls which is an easy 1hr and 15 minute drive, restaurants (10 minutes walking distance), ski resorts (Holiday valley 1 hr), snowmobile trails, nature trails, golf courses (5 miles), inland lakes, shopping, and a casino (1hr). Also there is a great mini-golf course that is fun for the whole family that is about a 5-10 minute drive from the apt. BILLS FANS (35 min from Ralph wilson stadium)

We are located 5 miles from the New York State Thruway (I-90), Exit 59 Dunkirk/Fredonia. From here, you will find that it’s a quick ride to and from the Buffalo (1 hr) or Erie (1 hr 10 min) International Airports.

This apartment unit is 2 Bedroom setup with 1 Queen Bed , 1 King bed and a pullout twin sofa in the living room with sleeping accommodations for 5 people. Features include: Breathtaking views of Lake Erie throughout the apartment. High Speed internet / Cable. LCD in living / bed room. Bathroom includes a Steam Shower with speaker (AUX hookup), back massage jets and foot massage.

Also make sure to check out the Lake Erie glass festival the organizers behind the First Annual Great Lakes Beach Glass Festival on May 25 and 26. estimates that the event will draw 7,000 to 9,000 attendees and more than 70 vendors from as far away as Japan to Erie’s Bayfront Convention Center.

Just an hour west down the shore, beach glass jewelry artists Lorie and Troy Dalrymple, owners of Beaches Jewelers, will host their fifth annual Ashtabula Harbor Beach Glass Festival on June 29 and 30. This street fair will close down the harbor’s Bridge Street with about 70 vendors and nearly 5,000 people.

About owner/property manager

My name is Austin and I have lived in California, S. Carolina and Florida but born and raised in Houston, Texas. I've worked for the Walt Disney Company at Disneyland Resort and The Walt Disney World Resort , managed a seafood restaurant in Hilton Head Island, and Served some of Houston's most prominent people at Houston Country Club, so I have a good idea of how to take care of people and what great service is. By renting from me you will be guaranteed to have a relaxing vacation and have the ease of mind that you can call me if you have any concerns or issues.

owner/property manager purchased this apartment in 1980

Why owner/property manager chose Chautauqua-Allegheny

I have gone great lengths to preserve the historic integrity of this house and have put together an album with photos and documents of the property 'Harminnie' Originally built and owned by Harry and Minnie Hequembourg back in 1910, it was a great estate, and the history is really interesting. Guaranteed you will never see a property as unique as this one.

What makes this apartment unique

Steam shower w/speaker, 46" TV, High speed internet. Beachfront access. Breathtaking views of Lake Erie. Historical significance to the area.

Notes:
This home was built in 1910 by a man named Harry Hequembourg who owned the stretch of land over the entire point gratiot cove originally. We have many documents encompassing the history of the property including photos and articles (home was featured in a better homes magazine in the 20s). This house is great for families and people that desire incredible views from our beachfront property on the shores of lake Erie! If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Peaceful and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Austin was super accommodating. We enjoyed being able to share our mini get away with our dogs! The property was beautiful and it was perfect "beach" access (the pictures do not do it justice)! It was relaxing and fun ( Austin had lots of activities to keep everyone entertained ). Also, private setting but close enough to drive to some neat places (additional beaches and Midway park). We hope to go back in the future! Great property!!!

Like our own private lakeshore

  • 4 of 5

If you want a peaceful relaxing getaway on Lake Erie, this is it. Getting to the lake was only steps from the house. It was like our own private lake and shore. The sunsets were amazing. The house is beautiful and the apartment meet our needs. It was very hot the week we visited and the lack of air conditioning was little unsettling. But the experience and time to relax was beneficial. Jules and Austin were very accommodating to our needs.

Owner's Response: We offered a window A/C unit to the tenant toward the end of the stay which is now a standard inside of this unit. We apologize for the inconvenience.

A quiet family get away.

  • 5 of 5

My wife, daughter and I needed a place to get away. My wife Lisa is terminally ill with breast cancer and it was her desire to spend some quite family time listening to the waves break on the beach. We needed restful, quiet accommodations, comfortable and clean. This rental is all that and more. We were able to receive out of town guests for afternoon visits and quiet campfires on the beach, I was able to kayak one calm morning and watch a bald eagle soar overhead. The property owners were pleasant and helpful. The architecture, landscape, and decor truly wonderful. This vacation home was exactly what we were looking for. There are plenty of nearby attractions if you are looking for something to do, but we didn't venture further than Cold Stone Creamery just down the road for some evening ice cream. This rental receives my highest recommendation to anyone considering a stay along the shores of Lake Erie.

Thank you, Jewels and Austin for all of your hospitality and kindness.

Dan, Lisa and Cassandra.

Wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived,we were shocked to see such a beautiful home that is being restored to its original opulence.

There was a large grass yard with a hammock, picnic table, and a hammock swing that are grandson just loved. The beach in front of the house was very quiet and at most we saw 6 or 7 people walking on the beach during our entire stay.

The lake was clear and the owner graciously supplied a kayak, canoe, and paddle board for our use. He was extremely helpful and responded to our every need. The apartment was well maintained with all of the needed appliances and utensils and the surround shower was absolutely fabulous.

The only down side was there was no air conditioning in the facility which was not a problem when there was a cool breeze from the Lake, but we were there during a hot time and occasionally it was warm in the apartment even with fans on.

It was a wonderful experience and we are planning on returning next year for an even longer time.

Great house! Great vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoy the not-so-busy places for family vacation, and this was perfect! The historic house is beautiful and relaxing. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings and watching the sunset over the lake. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen well stocked, and the living room perfect for unwinding in the evenings. Austin and Julia were so welcoming and accommodating, giving suggestions of places to eat and visit while we were there and offering movies, video games, and activities for our two teenagers to do. We all enjoyed swimming in the lake and picking up sea glass. There was one day that they lake was rough with waves, but otherwise we had beautiful weather for swimming and enjoying the water. The house is located in a quite cove with just a handful of other houses. While we were in Dunkirk we visited the lighthouse just down the street and went to the local fair while it was in town. We also took a day trip to Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY to eat at the Anchor Bar, the home of the original buffalo wings. The American Kazoo Factory is about forty minutes from Dunkirk and was fun to visit. They still make metal kazoos and have a nice boutique attached to the factory. We will definitely be staying here the next time we are back in the area!
